Contemporary methods for boundary layers, incompressible viscous flows, and inviscid compressible flows are studied. Finite differences and finite volume techniques are emphasized. Knowledge of programming language such as Python, C++, MATLAB or Java required.

MATHEMATICAL FLUID DYNAMICS

MATH 705

Advanced introduction to fluid dynamics. Basic concepts; elementary viscous flow; Navier-Stokes equations. Elementary airfoil theory; boundary layers. Vortex motion. Waves. Very viscous flow. Compressible flows. Instabilities, bifurcations, turbulence. Requires working knowledge of multivariate calculus, differential equations and mechanics.

INTERMEDIATE FLUID DYNAMICS

ME 563

Incompressible differential and integral analysis for basic conservation laws, kinematics, exact solutions to Navier-Stokes, boundary layer theory, vorticity, potential flow, and selected topics.
