About this rating

Raw average: 3.93/5 from 15 quality ratings. The adjusted rating blends this with the UW review average (3.66/5), weighted as 20 additional ratings. Smaller samples stay closer to that average. Each captured review is counted once in the prior; this does not correct who chooses to leave a review.

This class has high school vibes in a good way. There is quite a lot of reading, but honestly it's all pretty interesting and you don't have to know much about the readings beyond some basic concepts for the quizzes. He is quite strict on attendance and participation matters for your grade, but the class is really chill and you do learn a lot.

He is a nice and passionate professor! However, unless you have the time to read everyday of the week and is not easily bored by old stories, then enjoy. I was not expected to have two or more, 10 page plus stories every week and the students have to remember every detail in each story, especially when it came to the oral midterm and final exam.

Prof. Detwyler is amazing and definitely passionate about his work. As a literature course, be prepared to read for every discussion. He'll definitely get you invested in your work if you allow it.

Anatoly is very easygoing. There are no exams for this class besides a group project at the end. There are quizzes during the discussion and they are very straightforward, it's either you read the readings or you didn't read them. The lectures are based on the textbook. Attendance is mandatory and is a big factor in your grade.

Prof. Detwyler is super passionate about East Asia and our lectures were pretty interesting, especially when it was about lesser known topics. Discussion sections were a big part of the grade, so try to participate if you can. Other than that, it was an easy class if you participate and do the readings, and the final was making a game.
