About this rating

Raw average: 4.55/5 from 11 quality ratings. The adjusted rating blends this with the UW review average (3.66/5), weighted as 20 additional ratings. Smaller samples stay closer to that average. Each captured review is counted once in the prior; this does not correct who chooses to leave a review.

MATH 341
Quality 4/5Difficulty 3/5
I had a pretty good experience. Lars is very easy to talk to, has clear criteria, well-organized notes posted online. Exam covered topics NOT on the practice exam, you need to study everything. But the EC opportunities all semester AND on the final more than made up.

Lars cares a lot about both the subject and his students. The homework was generally difficult and required writing many proofs. However, he is very accessible outside of class and is always willing to answer questions. The exams were relatively easy and similar to the practice tests. He also offers plenty of extra credit throughout the semester.

MATH 522
Quality 4/5Difficulty 3/5
New professor. Very lenient? You can get 107.5 final grade. Lots of discussion during lectures; helpful for understanding but didn't finish the content. Uploads notes. Assignment is 2-3 very hard problems (1-3hrs), the 3rd is is extra credit. Downsides: no Piazza. No practice exams. Textbook is very hard to understand.

Even though he is relatively new to teaching and being a professor, he was amazing at explaining theorems using diagrams to explain them. I can't state how important his drawings were when it came to learning the content. If you are a visual learner, you should certainly take him. HW's were 2 questions a week with extra credit HW every other week

Lars is an AMAZING guy. (1) Only two mandatory hwk problems week. (2) Hwks can be REALLY hard or really easy (3) Extra credit on hwk and tests (easy A) (4) He is very passionate (5) He takes his time on proofs and explains all of the steps. It can make lectures boring. He is a good professor now. In few years, he will be an amazing professor.

Professor Niedorf is great professor because he uses very organized notes, is easily accessible outside of class, and he genuinely cares about his students. If you have to take Math 340, Professor Niedorf is a good choice.
