I did not have Mikkelson as my professor, but after the first midterm, I started attending his lectures. And they were way better than my previous professor. He gives lots of examples, explains concepts well, and is a great lecturer overall. Exams are hard, but reasonable. It was well worth waking up early and attending his lectures.
Fun professor just a difficult class
Engaging lecturers. Fast talker. Recorded lectures. Funny. Exams are hard, but for the most part fair. Required attendance in discussion.
Very good prof, he did a good job with example problems during lecture to explain the concepts. Exams were very difficult and required a complete understanding of material. He records all his lectures which is very nice. Difficult material.
Lecture slides are heavy and dense with not a lot of explanation of why things are the way they are. Often not at scheduled office hours so receiving help is hard. When at office hours he responds to questions with rude and demeaning responses. Isn't very understanding when problems with ANSYS software arise on exams and homework's.
Andy made getting up at 7am bearable because he has a good dry sense of humor. He is also a beast. He knew what he was talking about it mechanics, and my god this guy can draw.
Solid professor. Engages lecture halls, teaches things well, likes to use real world examples to demonstrate concepts, one of the better engineering professors I have had
Overall this professor was good for the class, he was engaging and helped make the class interesting. The professor does go through examples in class pretty quickly, however he goes pretty detailed with them. The class is tough but the professor clearly explains topics and answers questions very frequently.
Really enjoyed the way that Professor Mikkelson taught this course. I ended with a very high AB and was very close to the grade cut off, but the class wasn't curved at all. This is no fault of Mikkelson's- the course is taught by 3 professors but rather something to be aware of. Overall, Mikkelson was one the best (and funniest) professors I've had
Andy is a beast
One of my favorite professors ever! He has a great sense of humor and genuinely cares about his students and their understanding of the concepts. He explains everything clearly and uses a lot of examples in his lectures.
He is great. I didnt do well in this class, but that was due to me and outside commitments. I don't think I would have passed at all had he not taught the course so well. I have used the material professionally since taking his course and I had a good grasp on the subject. Dude has a dry sense of humor but he's a great lecturer and a good person.
Ok lecturer, but not much passion for the subject. He's not very good at answering student questions. Everyone agrees the book is bad, but they keep using it. Exam questions are not very clear and the group project is time consuming. If Zhiyi Jiang is still a TA, choose him, he's more experienced with the course.
Andy is a down to earth guy and a good professor. He mixed some jokes and videos in with his lectures to give some relief from the content. I think he explains concepts well and emphasizes the most important ones. He asks a lot of questions during lecture, and I would recommend participating even if it's just thinking of what the answer is.
Mikkelson's teaching style is fun and relaxed mainly owing to his dry humor. Lectures could be tedious and sometimes felt they contained more information than needed, but he was able to convey ideas well for the most part. Very helpful and accessible outside of class. Nice guy.
Andy is relaxed and has a good sense of humor. He is a little monotone and goes through lectures fairly quickly, but does a good job explaining the material. The course itself is rather boring but he does a good job trying to make it interesting.
He does not explain concepts very well and lectures are not very organized. Sometimes acts like the stuff he is teaching is "common knowledge" when they are very difficult to understand. Highly recommend professor Detlor for mechanics of materials over Mikkelson.
Decent engineering professor, gets the lecture hall to participate and isn't a bore. Helpful and accessible outside class. The group runs the class between 3 professors so there was disagreement when it came to if they should curve or not.
Mikkelson gets a bad rap but I really enjoyed his lectures. He has a dry sense of humor that is fun to engage with in lectures. His lectures explain the material clearly and his worked examples help you understand the material.
He does his best to make an extremely boring topic manageable. If you can get Zhiyi Jiang as your TA for this course do it, he is amazing. Exams are open book, closed notes which is weird but you can just write everything from your notebook in the textbook for the exam.
Mikkelson is a professor that gives zero additional effort beyond 2 lectures a week. I would assume he has more important research to worry about. He is extremely lazy when it comes to assisting students, puts zero effort into helping beyond one sentence. Zero personality and a terrible lecturer. Class taught by the textbook and TA's.
He is so mean and his class is super boring, and his teaching is like telling a story before you go to bed, and u would fall of sleep u don't even know that. He is a super super suck professor. Please do not take his class if you want a happy colleage life. The most important thing is his sample exam would useless, and his exam is super hard.
If you can take the course with any other prof, consider it. Puts very little effort into teaching beyond just reading off the slides and doing problems, but grades as if you had a thorough teacher. The textbook is the only way through.
Andy is awesome he is accessible outside of class and really cares about his students. Exams are fair and gives plenty of partial credit. Awesome prof, really recommend taking his class!
Good guy, means well with the class. Does a lot of examples in lecture and covers the material pretty well. Homework is long and the tests are tough though.
I dubbed him the terminator. He comes into class and kills material. Good professor as he is clear and entertaining. I just like the guy.
The most boring professor I have ever had. He reads the presentation to you word for word and is not interested in engaging with students or the subject matter. Avoid this professor if possible. Exams are incredibly long.
Andy is a great instructor with a good sense of humor. Classes are not mandatory, but help to understand the material for the homework.
Lectures are fairly dull and boring, but contain essentially all the information you need to do well in the course
Bring coffee to lecture, he is drier than the sahara desert. But he is clear and the dry info is actually helpful. Homework and practice homework more then prepare you for the exam.
Exams are hard and different from the hw.
Didnt mind the class. Pretty interesting guy with a dry sense of humor. monotone. But I really wasnt happy with my end grade, even tho i was in contention for an acceptable one all semester. not sure what happened.
Does a lot of examples from the book and all lecture slides are put online for review.
Just stands at the front of class and reads lecture slides off the screen. Extremely monotone and boring.
not bad
