About this rating

Raw average: 4.00/5 from 12 quality ratings. The adjusted rating blends this with the UW review average (3.66/5), weighted as 20 additional ratings. Smaller samples stay closer to that average. Each captured review is counted once in the prior; this does not correct who chooses to leave a review.

Prof Hoskins is one of the reasons Nobel Prize is leaving academic biochem and chem towards industry companies such as google. His students struggle finding a job or even a postdoc. His lack of communication skills and his preassumptions and judgement about students along with his fear, makes him small.

One of the best professors I had in undergrad! Extra credit opportunities were available for attendance, which was nice. Tests were "unpredictable" in that anything from lectures was fair game (it was a lot of content) but also not terribly difficult as long as you put in the work. Lectures were interesting/engaging, and very relevant.

His lectures were interesting but very complicated. He did the second portion of the course which covered more difficult content and the exam averages went from 75 on the first two exams to 60 and 66 on the 3rd midterm and the final exam. Very specific things are tested, which is hard since midterms are 50 min. He was passionate about biochem.

Dr. Hoskins tries to teach but avoids giving the necessary background. I didn't expect that considering his age and experience in teaching (I think he is going to retire in like 10 years or so). He gets exhausted, and takes that frustration to himself, first, and then to the student who asks for help. Maybe he is unhappy with who he became.

Professor Hoskins is a caring and intelligent teacher. He was my favorite professor of the course. The only thing I would encourage is to watch the lectures online (if they provide them in future semesters) for the glycolysis, krebs, beta-oxidation, and urea cycle lectures instead of going to lecture in-person. They are VERY content-heavy.

Professor Aaron is a super nice person. He cares about his students, and he clearly explains the materials really well. The exams are challenging, and it is super easy to lose points on the exams even if you study well. I didn't read the book. however, it is highly recommended for getting an A. Previous exams are helpful too, and many recycled ques
