I truly loved Dr. G! She was engaging, funny, and explained concepts perfectly. She went at a great pace for gen chem and was an accessible learner. As evidence: she recorded every lecture but the room was almost always PACKED with students in person. I appreciated how she got students involved (even w/ 500+ people) and was incredibly approachable.

Took this class over a year ago and Dr G still says hi & talks to me when she sees me around. Lectures are entertaining and she's very caring. Very accessible outside of class & willing to work with you as much as you need. Exams can be tough but if you put in the effort you should be fine. Big curve at the end. One of the chem best profs I've had.

CHEM 108: Professor Gustin is the best. She is so sweet and I love her lectures. She makes a difficult course easier just because she is the best (I'm not saying this class is easy tho). She even says bless you when someone sneezes lol. Take any chem course with her, it's worth it!

FOR CHEM 108, It is appalling how the class exams don't reflect the practice exams or even the discussion materials. Get ready to study the pop quizzes, your tri-weekly preclasses, your labs, your homework, your discussion homework, and the practice exams. You'll still do bad. Also, she makes typos on stuff and refuses to correct it.

Amazing professor for a hard class.

Be ready, CHEM103 is a heavy course that requires alot of work, but Dr. G made it as smooth as possible. She makes the lectures fun and drops jokes every now and then. She's always accessible in and out of class and will always be happy to answer your questions. She's also very understanding and flexible, especially with exams.

Dr G was an amazing professor. She makes herself super accessible for help outside of class, which was great before exams. She also is super engaging during lectures, so it was much easier to pay attention. I feel like doing well in this class is doing a lot of practice problems, which she is always there to help with whenever it's needed.

chem 103 is hard and has lots of work regardless of the prof you have, but Dr G was a great lecturer and seemed to really care about her students. She was always reminding us about office hours and review sessions and was very accessible if you needed anything. I wish she taught chem 104!

Dr. G really is a G! She is so sweet and caring. Chemistry is really hard but she makes it more enjoyable and fun! Her lectures are entertaining and helpful. She is always willing to help her students and actually cares. If you're taking chem 103 you want Dr. G!

This was one of the worst classes I've ever taken in my many years of schooling. The concepts themselves were not difficult to learn (under the right professor), but the workload expected from you made it not easy. I STRONGLY believe that with any other professor or instructor, I would've been more engaged in the lectures.

I hated chemistry before college, but Dr. Gustin truly changed my feelings towards the subject. She's a phenomenal professor and does an amazing job breaking things down. You can tell how much she cares about her students and wants you to succeed, she's hands down one of the best professors I've had in undergrad so far (coming from a junior).

She is a great professor, really wished she taught 104. Hard class, but she genuinely cares about her students well being and education.

Dr. G is one of the most kind, empathetic, and patient people I have met in my entire life. She makes lectures very fun and engaging and she is extremely helpful during office hours. Chem 103 is a difficult class and covers a lot of content but Dr. G made it something to look forward to every week.

Gustin is so funny and a good teacher. Gen chem 1 is obviously a hard class, but I believe shes the best professor you can get for it. Exams were hard, % needed for an A ended up being around 83% after final exam grades. Go to office hours if needed, she is really nice and never condescending. Lectures mandatory (TopHat), not recorded.

Dr. G is a joyful and amazing professor! Chemistry is a hard course, but she made concepts very clear to follow. She clearly knows what she is talking about during student hours, and she can simplify most hard concepts for your understandings. The course is also curved, so if you pay attention, getting an A or AB should be easy.

Dr. G was a really great prof! She was very caring and took the time to make sure we understood the material, especially if you went to office hours or the pre-exam review sessions. I was really bummed to hear that she isn't teaching chem 104 next semester, I think she was an amazing and very smart professor.

Dr.G was the best professor I could have asked for Chem 103. She cares about her students and wants them to succeed and her office hours are extremely helpful. She is also super funny and had our whole lecture of 200+ students laughing all the time. Don't skip lecture, study for discussion quizzes, go to office hours, and USE THE CLC HELP SHEETS!

Incredibly kind and funny professor She makes chem understandable and was very accommodating when I had health issues. Go to her office hours - she is very helpful and clearly wants her students to do well and succeed. With that said, the class is tough, and it isn't for everyone, but if you have to take chem you should take it with her.

Go to her office hours. Dr. Gustin is incredibly patient and helpful. She wants to prepare you and help you so utilize that. Chem 103 is a difficult class and Dr. G will help you as much as she can through it, but you have to be willing to put in the work.

I absolutely love Dr. G! I had her for chem 103&104, and I still keep in contact with her today. Dr. G. is not only highly knowledgeable about chemistry and a great lecturer (she always says "bless you" when people sneeze), she is one of the nicest and most caring professors. She truly cares about students and gets to know you outside of lecture.

Her lectures are organized and easy to follow. Her office hours are super helpful. She is very caring and is always willing to help her students succeed in the course. The only thing is her exams are hard; her chem 103 lecture had the lowest exam averages by far compared to other professors. Exams are usually much harder than the exam preparation.

Although Chem 103 is a tough class, Dr. G is a hilarious professor who makes you want to show up to every lecture. She keeps things fun and light and is always honest. Her office hours are helpful and she usually answers all of her emails in good time. She explains the content really well and posts the annotated slides to look back on and review.

Dr G is the best person to teach this class. Her teaching style is so clear, and easy to follow. Definitely go to her office hours regularly, even if you don't have questions (she also hands out stickers). She motivated me to work harder and get my grades up, and ensured that I had a solid understanding of the fundamentals of chemistry. Best prof!

Such an amazing professor, go to her office hours!! They are very helpful even if you dont have any questions

Dr G is a kind and eccentric professor who always tries to make you laugh in lecture. Personally I found the exams to be relatively fair and easier compared to 103. I did the discussion problems, practice & sample exams to study and was fine. Dr G is thorough in her explanations and passionate about chem! Good luck 104 warriors

She is kind and genuine. I enjoyed her lectures but the final didn't go well. The exams are hard but not impossible. I wish she gave more specific ways to study for the exams, especially the final. I dropped from an A to a B due to the final. Just work hard and ask as many question as you can.

Not a fan.

I like Dr. G. I went to her office hours a few times -- which were helpful. I can tell she really cares about her student and their success. I would recommend her.

Chem 104 sucks, but Professor Gustin will make you smile through the pain. In seriousness, chem 104 requires lots of time outside of class if you want to have a decent grade, and the labs are quite tedious. However, Professor G is extremely caring and hilarious, and effectively teaches difficult material in lecture. Highly recommend!

Dr. G. is one of my favorite professors ever. She teaches chemistry really well and is very helpful outside of class getting questions answered. She has an amazing french accent and an awesome sense of humor that keeps lectures entertaining. The thing I love most about her is how much she cares for students on an individual level, which is rare.

Hardest class I've ever taken. The exams are so incredibly difficult. I went to her office hours quite often and I did not find them all that helpful.

Dr. G is super nice but her lectures can get boring and then hard to understand. There's lost of materials in canvas that are great to use if you get confused on anything. A lot of the class is teaching yourself stuff so you need to get used to it. Don't be afraid to go to her office hours they're very helpful and they're like a mini class.

Loved Dr. G! She's very personable, willing to help and explain things clearly, but the exams were fairly difficult. If you take this class I highly recommend going to her office hours before exams, it will pay off.

Dr. G taught well-planned lectures with easy-to-follow explanations and sample problems covering foundational concepts. She was approachable outside of class and held review sessions before midterms. Her weekly announcements set a schedule for keeping up in the course and she was very good with McBurney accommodations. I highly recommend Dr. G!

Lea is a very sweet, likable person, and she has a great energy during lecture. She is a good prof for Chem 103/104 if you're wanting solid explanations of the fundamentals, however, I would have liked to see more questions of exam-level difficulty during class. Being challenged more would've better prepared me for exams.

She is so nice but that only goes so far. Even my TA agreed that she is an awful teacher. If you don't already know all of the chem material before this class be prepared to do awful and never get above a D on an exam. Lectures are useless and nothing is ever explained. She also never posts answers to the questions she uses in class which is awful.

A professor that is very caring, and often accessible outside of class. But in order to do well in class, you need to review almost daily since the tests are very difficult with averages never above a C. There is a substantial amount of homework and if you don't complete the pre-class assignments, you will not understand the lecture material.

Insanely hard grader, be prepared to never do well on the exams. We have a ton of pre class quizzes and readings that she never goes over, so you basically are teaching yourself. You must however, have a full understanding of all the preclass topics before coming to lecture the next day though, or lecture will make zero sense and will be useless.

Dr. G is an amazingly caring woman. Chem 104 is a tough class, no matter who you take it from. Dr. G cares about her students and is invested in their success. She's very good with McBurney accommodations. If you go to class and ask questions, she can and will help you succeed.

Professor G made Chem 104 so much better. I went to every lecture because they were so helpful-- make sure to write down practice problems and study the labs because she puts them on tests! She is very helpful outside of class and even arranges review sessions before exams. She is also so caring and funny. I definitely recommend her!

One of the kindest, most caring professors I've had so far. Easily accessible, very understanding, and should have been shown more respect by her students. Lectures were extremely helpful, lots of practice problems + relevant examples. Course content/lectures were well paced; always took time to explain problems. Very funny, made lecs interesting.

A good gen chem instructor to have. Her lectures are well-thought out and she explains concepts very well. She lightens up the lectures by cracking jokes which makes it better. She has office hours all the time and will personally sit with you to help you understand concepts. Beware, the exams are difficult as are a lot of the gen chem exams.

Cute, hilarious, understanding, and french!? Say less! As someone who's dealing with a lot of health issues I have never been more understood by Dr. G, she has made one of the hardest classes at UW entertaining and fun while also accommodating my needs. As a person she is a sparkle and makes lecture enjoyable with her witty jokes. 10000% recommend!

Gen chem is always difficult, but Lea made the content easy to understand. I really enjoyed her use of TopHat to keep students engaged during lectures and give them the chance to check their understanding. I wish more profs would do this.

Prof. Gustin is one of the best professors I've had at UW-Madison. She genuinely cared about her students' wellbeing as well as their understanding of course concepts. She made extra effort to be as accessible as possible and was excellent at explaining confusing concepts.

Gustin's office hours are helpful, she's funny and kind. Lecture material that may not be in the book always shows up on exams so do make sure to skip as little as you can. Class is relatively straightforward and easy to get an A

Lea is the best professor I've had at UW Madison so far. Lea cares about her students, listens to feedback, and is always working to improve her teaching style. Do yourself a favor and meet with her outside of class, it is very helpful and informative. If you stay on top the material and work hard, you'll do great!

This class was AMAZING! Dr. G was very invested in our success and always available for questions. She does a great job of explaining concepts and regularly asks for our feedback on how the class is going and what she can do to help. She provides many additional resources and responds to emails quickly. She is super sweet and funny.

Dr. G truly is a very nice person. Chem 104 is a very difficult class and I had situations where I would be very frustrated about certain questions put on the exam and she was always very patient and kind. A big problem i had with her is that our homework questions are very different than the exams. The exam questions are much harder than hw. GL!

Dr. G is caring, always available to answer questions, and genuinely wants to get to know the students. At 5 credits, 104 has a lot of work but skip out and you'll flunk. I took it online because of the pandemic, so labs were kind of boring, but lab material does appear on her exams so pay attention. Be ready to answer conceptual questions on exams

Extremely tough grader. A lot of her exams have written portions and you have to know exactly what she is thinking, or youre getting points off. I found chem 103 to be a breeze and she made chem 104 miserable. Just my opinion! I would chose another professor if I had to take the class again. Still managed to get an A but it was extremely stressful

I love Dr.G!!! She is so willing to work one on one with you. Office hours are the way to go. Participate in class and ask questions and you will do well. She wants her students to succeed. Best chem professor ever!!! :)

I don't regret choosing Dr.G... she is an awesome lecturer and makes the extra effort to help her students understand content. Chem 104 is a challenging class but she made it seem less so. Her exams are definitely hard (they tend to really push your thinking outside the box) and a fair amount of her exam content is based on logic.

Chem 104 with Gustin was the hardest class I have had to take so far at Madison. Her exams and quizzes are extremely challenging and are not similar to what you would expect based on homework and lecture material. If you are able I would recommend taking a different professor as other classes seem to have much easier exams.

By far my favorite professor at UW-Madison. She cared a lot about her students and was always accessible outside of class. She made chemistry fun and made office hours enjoyable. Tests were difficult, but doing the sample exams, discussion packets, and rewatching lectures helped. Very accommodating during COVID.

Prof Gustin made 104 tolerable and at times enjoyable. Expect different, but the same level of difficulty as topics covered in 103. Quizzes, HW, and labs are small parts of the grades, and exams cover all kinds of material. Be ready for intensive work, but know the instructors will help you when you need it. Online transition was very smooth.

I absolutely adored having Dr.G as my chem 104 professor, she's funny, intense and covers tough topics in a understanding way. Lectures were always really engaging and worth going to. 104 was was better than 103 because of her, 10/10 would recommend her as a 104 professor.

Dr. G has been hands down the most caring, influential professor I have had during my freshman year. Although Chem104 is a difficult class,Dr. G certainly made it less of a struggle then it would have been with any other prof. She cares about her students and makes it very easy to reach out. Get to know her and use her office hours if you have her!

Dr. Gustin was hands down the best professor I have ever had. She kept the lectures engaging and she made an effort to make sure that she was available if they were in need of help outside of class. I have accommodations and she was incredibly understanding and made sure that all of my needs were met. Book was helpful to have, but not mandatory.

Prof. Gustin is really pretty funny and an excellent teacher. Her whole job at UW is a lecturer and so teaching is her primary and sole job. The class is curved, but in an unusual way. At the end of the semester, the top 24% get As. The next 13% get ABs and so on. This means that you are always in competition with your peers to be above average.

One of my favorite professors at this university. An amazing teacher that actually wants you to learn and do well! She genuinely cares and makes sure you understand. Her lectures are clear and, if not, she clarifies. Questions are encouraged and she is very approachable. Lastly, the tests ACTUALLY test your understanding of content - no tricks!

Dr. G is really kind and helpful. She is always avaliable during her office hours and by appointment which are super helpful if you need individual help on a topic. But her tests are VERY HARD and often have stuff on them that is not covered in lecture or discussion, I would study extremely hard and go in for help, but I still failed her tests.

I love her. She genuinely cares about you and your grades. She is hilarious and tries to make lecture fun. Do the practice exams and use piazza if you have doubts. Chem 104 is pretty hard and I hated the labs but put in a little effort and an A or AB is not hard to get.

Dr. G really cares about her class and you can tell. She offered review sessions before exams where she would stay outside of the normal lecture time. Practice exams are your best option for studying, the exams are not too difficult, questions are similar to what you would predict from practice exams.

Dr. G is super funny and passionate in lectures. Like any chem 104 class, the content can get difficult and there's a lot of pre/post class and lab work, but Dr. G really wants you to understand the material and ask questions. From what I've heard about other profs, she's a good choice for 104.
