Professor Gong is the worst professor I have had at Madison. He is hard to understand, and lacks knowledge of the course. Every lecture he would make mistakes fix one number and then move on. We had a sub and the sub was reading his notes and said "this lacks fundamental knowledge of calculus." I had to teach myself the whole course. Avoid.
I almost hate how hard the tests are for no absolute reasons. he isnt even great lecturer. avoid if you can or be ready to treat a 3 credit course like 5 credit course
Professor Gong is Hilarious in the fact that he might be the worst professor I have been taught by. No guidance in lectures (which are not even worth going to), and exams that are comically hard compared to all of the practice problems he gives. I would avoid him with a 10 foot pole.
Avoid if you can at all. Very difficult to understand and very quiet even with a microphone. His accent makes understanding almost impossible. He does not do a good job of explaining in class, often makes mistakes on the blackboard during proofs, and does not bother to go back and explain what went wrong. You are better off not going to lecture.
Professor Gong seems like a nice person, however he is very very very bad at explaining anything to do with the material. Do not take his classes unless you have to like I did. If you do get stuck with him, just be prepared to read the textbook and teach it to yourself!
He is the worst professor that I have ever met in UWMadison. He does not care about studens at all. He does not explain any concepts. He just prints material from textbook and writes them on the board. He is also a tough grader. You will lose many points even if you get a minor mistake in the exam. By the way, I do not think he can speak English.
Please give him a microphone, he is so quiet... He definitely was hard to understand and the class was very hard. The class had a hard curve right at the very end of the course, which seems to be standard. Went from F to a C.
This professor is terrible in nearly every way. He mumbles when he talks and directs his voice at the board, he has an INCREDIBLY thick accent which makes him even harder to understand, he doesn't explain things, he reads directly off paper and somehow still makes multiple mistakes every class. Literally had to teach myself the class.
Lectures were a waste of time.
The only good thing about Gong is the work he writes on the blackboard makes sense visually if you've followed along with the concepts. His accent makes his muttering incoherent and he misinterprets the questions being asked, so he never gives clear answers to questions during lectures. Tests were hard. The only way to survive is getting a good TA
He was audibly difficult to understand and had ambiguous board work. Very intelligent man, but extremely thick accent, and minimal to no topic/theorem labeling on the board made it impossible for me to understand what was going on.
Super nice dude... except you literally cannot understand him. If you have not had experience with the content you probably will not get an A no matter how much out of class work you do. Lectures are so confusing and I regret going to every one. He will write on the board and not explain his thinking or where anything came from.
Literally awful I'm sorry. Lectures were so bad they would confuse me about topics I already completely understood. His work is impossible to follow and he won't answer questions in any meaningful way.
Prof. Gong has a very heavy accent which makes it hard to understand during lecture. He is also not very loud so I had to sit in the front just to hear what he was saying. He writes neatly on the blackboard but he often skips steps while he is showing examples making it hard to follow his thoughts.
Legitimately the worst teacher I have had in my life. I'm sure he's brilliant in his own regard but just absolutely does not possess any ability to relay information. 0/10, just terrible, whatever you do steer clear from his 222 class.
learn nothing from lecture
You might as well learn Calculus 2 on your own. As an engineering student, he has been detrimental to my personal success. I relied on his lectures to learn and halfway through the class I realized I need to learn this material through a different outlet, because he will not teach you math thoroughly and will just recite proofs.
He isn't a bad person, but I got very annoyed about using online homework for diff eq. It's just frustrating to get a coefficient wrong or not knowing the "correct" format. I agree his accent is heavy and lectures are hard to follow. Exams are super easy, but I can see the class being a challenge for people who are new to the material.
Extreme accent and poor lecture preparations. Sometimes the theorems and solution methods are easy to understand on their own, but when they are not the professor can't be counted on to explain them. Be prepared to learn everything outside of class
He had a disorganized class lecture that was difficult to follow. Definitions were not clearly given, and it was unclear if something was a proof of a theorem or a counter-example until he finished writing.
This was an online class, each week a mind map of the reading was due, as well as a reflection. Once we completed that, we had to respond to one reflection. The assignments were very straight forward and when I emailed the professor, I always got a speedy reply. The grades for the discussion were not released, so that was a little frustrating.
He was so hard to understand... I got very little from lecture but had an absolutely amazing TA so I learned everything from him and youtube videos about the subject online... Pretty good curve in the class and the exams weren't very difficult if you had a pretty good understanding of the subjects.
Awful disjointed lectures. He didn't talk at all about how to actually do the problems, just vague examples that didn't help at all.
He has a very thick accent which is hard to understand. His lectures are mainly proofs and the examples he does do are all from the textbook. Word for word. If you are willing to read the book, there is no point going to lecture. The average for test scores are 55%. If you're good at studying on your own, this class is minimal effort.
Some people are just not meant to teach, and this professor is the prime example of that. While I am sure he is plenty intelligent in his own right, he lacks any ability to relay information clearly to his students, to the point where over half of the lecture doesn't show up. I think his English is fine, but his lack of clarity is so bad its still1
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. I can't understand a word he says and he never even turns around from the board to see if people have questions. He does not explain anything and just writes theorems up on the board. Ugh not fun and need to really depend on the TA's and self taught learning.
he was a good guy
very nice guy
His accent is really thick and he teaches with a lot of theory and almost no examples that help with the homework or exams. Skipping the lectures might be good because I was sometimes more confused when I went. Not the best.
BEWARE! I had the power lecture with him for Calc 3; worst one ever. His English is really difficult to understand, and from start to finish he doesn't stop talking! On top of it, his handwriting is illegible, and I sat in the first row! If you absolutely had to take this course with him, not going to lecture is not the worst idea in the world.
He teaches in a theoretical way with little to no examples that most people can't learn from. His broken English doesn't help anything at all either. He tries answering questions but usually just explains it the same way again. If you have to take this, don't, but if you still have to you better have some smart friends or a good reference.
Prof Gong is a nice guy. However, that won't help you do well in his class. His broken English is basically impossible to understand. Even if his language were clear, his teaching methods are unorthodox, confusing, and often flat-out wrong. We had a sub lecturer and it was the most I learned all semester. Don't take his class unless you have to.
Scattered lectures and accent made it hard to understand at first, but you get used to it about halfway through. I heavily relied on my TA's teaching and found the weekly quizzes to be extremely helpful. Tests are easier than other professors (had friends taking other professors courses). Gong's lectures were not easy to follow, and confusing.
He is very scattered at times and his lectures can skip around a lot so pay close attention. Sometimes he makes mistakes which isn't ideal when you are trying to learn. He is not very good about answering questions in lecture. He will just explain what he was doing again instead of answering. You will most likely consult the "textbook" to learn
It seems that Gong is truly a nice man, but he is absolutely useless as a teacher. This is a essentially a self taught class. If you are confident in your math skills take this class, and learn the material by yourself(not through the given packet which is useless). His inability to teach is somewhat balanced by having easy tests(relatively)
Lectures are basically pointless, save a few where maybe Gong said some important things. He can be tough to understand and he is kinda all over the place when it comes to teaching
Assigns homework problems that just frustrate you and not ones that really help you learn concepts. Really bad English. Not very clear or helpful. Fast paced lectures.
Gong has been teaching here forever so he knows what he's talking about. He is just very hard to understand because he mumbles and doesn't speak clearly. If you get a good TA, then everything will be crystal clear, but be prepared to have no idea what's going on in lecture (he likes to show you proofs without first telling you it's a proof).
Prof. Gong made extra efforts in ensuring that students understood the fundamentals of the course materials. He held extra problem solving sessions to go over difficult exercises. I would highly recommend taking his real analysis class.
Professor Gong is a good professor that suffers from a thick foreign accent. He knows the material well, and cares very much that students understand it. He provided out-of-class review sessions before exams. If you can follow the board without fully understanding his words, you could not do much better. But do keep in mind that analysis *is* hard.
I try not to sleep in his class, but I failed in every lecture. His handwriting on the blackboard is like drawing on the draft. Just DON'T take this class, unless you are talented in self learning, or you are confident with your TA.
Ya... Just don't take his class. Just don't.
Week on XGONG decided to say the word "OK" 200 times in the first 30 minutes of class, due to his excellent use of the English language. After sitting through 2 weeks of miserable lecture I decide it was useless... only to see that all questions on the midterm/exam were particularly hard and specific problems done in lecture. Uniquely terrible.
I totally don't encourage you to take his class. You cannot understand his words and even his writing. And you have to spend whole bunch of time reading textbook and doing homework after class.
Gong isn't the best. His accent is fairly heavy, but that's not what makes the class difficult. He explains things poorly and doesn't really introduce new topics. He just jumps right into them without really defining anything.
Lectures are fairly hard to understand. At least half of the class stopped going to them all together. Don't do that, he says stuff in lecture that isn't covered in the homework that WILL be on the exam. I would take him again because I love math, but he is far from an ideal prof.
Nice guy, very helpful, and he wants you to learn. Unfortunately, he's really crappy at explaining stuff. Also, his blackboard work is prone to errors that a struggling student will not catch. If you’re gifted at math, Dr. Gong might actually be a great prof for you. Otherwise, hold out for someone with more natural ability for explaining stuff.
Do not take under any circumstances. Poor structure to lectures, obfuscates basic conclusions, unable to communicate any overarching structure to class, frequently marks correct answers wrong and argues forever before giving minimal points back, makes students in front row uncomfortable, and doesn?t explain the actual grading policy used.
Terrible prof. Avoid at all costs! I loved the material before he tried to teach it. He makes students feel awkward, frequently marked my correct answers wrong, and can't convey a concept. He is never clear about what he assumes in proofs. His grading policy is confusing and his exams are unrelated to homework, lecture, or review sheets.
Worst teacher EVER.He is undeniably knowledgeable but he is incapable of communicating the material.PROS:there are re-do exams.CONS:Cannot speak proper English, often makes mistakes in lecture and becomes defensive when students raise it,unorganized lecture, bad handwritings, tough exams,no official course website, late response to emails.AVOID HIM.
He is very willing to help you understand a concept. All in all, he is a nice guy. However, his lectures move quickly and are hard to understand. I truly learned a lot from the class, but that was mostly a result of studying on my own. He assigns tough homework, but will help you with it and you learn a lot from it. The tests are too hard though.
Worst Teacher Ever. He is very arrogant, does not speak English, and his lecture is full of mistakes. I went to ask him a question after class, he mumbled, and talked down to me and did not answer my question. He uses stuff that he never defined in class. His lecture is very incomplete. Avoid taking a class with him at all cost.
Prof. Gong is a good professor. A great mathematician, he is able to help students who have interest in the subject. That said, 521 is a difficult class and many students will not succeed regardless of the instruction.
Give him a chance! Gong knows the material inside and out, and, with some effort from the student, he is effective at communication.
He's easily the worst math teacher I've ever had. It's obvious the entire class has no idea what's he saying when he's talking, and half the time he doesn't even address the class, he just mumbles to himself and writes on the board. DO NOT take a class with him unless you're desperate and willing to do a lot of work.
Worst math teacher I've ever had. He's boring and doesn't effectively convey the material. He's also very arrogant. This class was the exception to the rule, discussion was very helpful and lecture was completely worthless. Avoid Gong at any cost!
Arrived at class on the first day only to be shocked by his inability to communicate the material effectively. When I raised this concern to him he was extremely defensive and unwilling to attempt to improve his instruction. I immediately dropped the class. Avoid him at all cost.
Horrible teacher. The homework does not reflect the difficulty of the exams. You can know the trig front and backwards but still not get an A b/c the exams are a few levels harder and add a twist to each problem that you have not dealt with and can not figure out unless you have experience with it. Its ridiculously hard for a 2CR class! DO NOT TAKE
Very hard teacher to understand but if you do the homework and have had some trig before you should be ok. There is a very nice curve when grading the class, so as long as you know the process behind certain types of problems you should be ok in the class.
OMG, this man was the worst professor ever. I'm not sure if he was ever taught the American system of mathematics, but his way of teaching is horrible!! He can't teach well, he had no practice exams (which will probably change now), has no review sessions, can't really speak English, and somehow he is head of his department!!! Good luck with him
The worst professor I've ever had or even had any contact with all my life. He speaks English very VERY VERY badly, rewrites the textbook on the board at the speed of light, and he’s completely in capable of explaining/answering any question since he doesn’t even understand what he is asked. He is traumatizing. Seriously, do not take his class you

Worst. Teacher. EVER. Doesn't speak English fluently, so he has problems with articles. He doesn't teach math, he just writes a bunch of letters on the board. Random ones, cause he doesnt speaky da english. ****.
