Funny professor who wants his students to succeed. You get used to his accent, and it's not too bad. Lectures can be quick, but if you read the assigned weekly readings and attend discussion sessions, you'll be fine. Don't need HS calc to do well but do spend some time with the course precalc review. Just be ready to spend time practicing!!
Very nice person who clearly knows a lot about math but has absolutely no idea how to explain it. Just talks about mathematical things he thinks is cool instead of teaching the exam material, and has no problem with exam averages consistently being in the low 70's. Projector or computer breaks at least once a lecture as well.
Very nice, funny guy. Caring as well. As a professor, absolutely not. I have never taken calc, and the way he taught it was like a foreign language. He wrote very fast in lecturers, yet you cant understand his writing. He has a thick accent, and he makes mistakes in lectures all the time. I stopped going cause it was a waste of my time. Dropped it.
ADORABLE, funny, and kind, but a bad professor. His accent is not bad though like people say. He is disorganized and does nothing but proofs, and makes a decent amount of mistakes during lecture. He is very bad at explaining things. 87% of your grade is based on 3 exams.
Tonghai is such a funny character it's hard not to love him. He could be hard to understand if you haven't been exposed to a Chinese accent much, so sit up front if you haven't. Haven't been unable to take calc before college, the class was pretty difficult for me, but the TAs were helpful and Tonghai was patient with explaining concepts.
Tonghai is a good math professor whether you have taken AP clac in high school or if this is your first time with calculus. He has a bit of an accent but truly cares about what he is teaching and throws in some pretty great jokes. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to go to his office hours. He really cares that you understand the material.
Daddy Tonghai is the man. He gives you everything you need to know. He is a super happy guy and is really passionate about math. Tests are really fair and closely related to material covered in class. If you didn't take AP Calc in high school you're going to get dominated by all of the other kids who did.
Tonghai is a great professor as long as you have taken calc 1 before. Provides awesome expansion on calculus concepts but does not review the basics. Tests are exactly like the practice exams and less challenging than the content he teaches in class.
At first it can be a little challenging to get used to his accent but once you do you will be fine. He truly cares if his students understand what he is teaching and is always willing to answer questions. He is a very nice guy. The exams are fair. If you have some calculus knowledge, study, and pay attention in class you will do well.
Was a really nice guy and easy grader. His accent made it a little tough to understand.
Tonghai's lectures were pretty hard to make it through, but he was caring and overall a great guy. His exams were pretty easy if you did some studying.
Tonghai is a really good professor who actually cares about his students. I sucked at Calc in high school and when Tonghai explained it, it finally made sense. However, if you don't have somewhat of a basis in Calculus this class will be hard for you.
Tonghai is the sweetest man -- it's clear he really cares about his students. He was always positive, upbeat, and humorous during lecture, made me want to go everyday. His accent is a bit hard to understand at first, but it only takes a week to get used to. I did take AP Calc in high school which helped, but he is a fantastic teacher if you try
Hard to understand at first but you get used to it. Teaching is kind of all over the place. I would recommend seeking out outside tutoring or Khan academy for help.
Hard to follow at times but his hilarious demeanour and passion for math makes up for it. Didn't take calc in HS but managed to get an A. Tests are doable as long as you get 100% on the hwk and do well on discussion quizzes. Complete your discussion worksheets! Gives a TON of extra credit. Not the best teacher but if you work hard you'll be fine
Tonghai is the nicest cutest man ever. That being said, if you did not take calc in high school, DO NOT take 221 with him. Lecture is good for refreshing your knowledge, that's about it. Tests are very fair. If you took calc you'll be great. He's so funny and stuff, lecture is enjoyable.
Tonghai's accent is a bit difficult to understand at first but you can figure out what he is saying 99% of the time after the first week. He's a good man and loves his job and mathematics but this class will be very tough if it is your first time taking Calculus.
Yang's lectures are quite disorganized. He bounces around from topic to topic, and it can be difficult to understand the flow of ideas that he is presenting. It's also difficult to understand his thick accent. The textbook that is required does help a bit but it's difficult to comprehend. Weekly quizzes should be studied for, not easy.
Tonghai is a nice guy but goes through material very quick and jumps around in his work, making following along difficult. Don't bother buying the packet/book the math department tells you to buy, you'll never use it. If you took calc before, showing up to lecture most of the time and paying some attention will get you a decent grade in the class.
Tonghai is a caring guy. He gives lots of extra credits to make sure you have a solid opportunity to get an A in his class. Good choice for first semester calc.
Tonghai is a really nice guy and decent professor. I took calc in high school, so his charm and personality made me content with going to lecture everyday (I could've skipped and still got an A). He truly cares about his students, and I think it's obvious.
Nice guy. If you've taken calculus in high school the class should be fairly easy.
Professor Yang is the kindest soul, he is extremely understanding & very passionate about math. You can't help but be excited when coming to his class because he loves his job. At first his accent is very heavy, but give it a week & you'll be able to understand him perfectly fine. He gives lots of extra credit and only wants his students to succeed
I took AP Calc AB in highschool, but for some stupid reason I retook it here. With that being said, this class was very easy for the most part. The online homework allowed multiple tries so those were easy points, and the weekly discussion quizzes were fair. Tonghai is a funny man and is caring for his students. Accent for me wasn't too bad.
If you took calc in high school, I would definitely recommend Tonghai. He goes fairly deep into the theories of calculus but it usually isn't necessary to learn for the tests. That said, if you have never taken calculus before, he might go over only one or two examples of things that will actually be on the test. He does have a thick accent too.
Great guy
If you've already taken calc in high school and you didn't get credit for it, but you know what you're doing, Tonghai is very entertaining. Wouldn't recommend him if you need to actually learn the material though.
He is a little hard to understand, but he does know what he is talking about in lecture. He gives plenty of extra credit which helps out a lot. Not much on the test is a surprise as long as you follow in class.
Switch profs immediately if this is your first time taking calc 1. This was my third year taking calc 1 so I never went to lectures and still got an A. The TA's are pretty lenient graders and give a lot of partial credit. The online quizzes and homework are based on the highest grade with unlimited tries which is nice.
Professor Yang was a nice professor but his accent made learning in the class difficult. He knows his information and is passionate about math but seems to have trouble organizing the information. There are a few extra credit opportunities which were very helpful.
bad
Kind of hard to understand, but if you took AP calc the class is pretty easy.
I took AP Calc BC in high school and found his class easy. But if I didn't, I would likely find his class confusing rather than challenging. Lectures are not very concise and to the point. His accent is thick but isn't a big deal since it's math--I got used to it in two weeks. Pr. Yang is a very kind and warm-hearted man. Ask him about his charity.
Dr. Yang's accent was not an obstacle in understanding the material. It is true I did not understand him sometimes but he was always ready to slow down and answer questions. I would email him problems that I did for practice the night before an exam and he would respond within ten minutes with corrections and advice. Highly recommended!
Strong accent, very unclear, but a very warm and kind man. If you already understand the material he makes a lot of sense, but that's the problem, he's supposed to teach you. The book was extremely necessary, and so was Khan Academy. If you know the material well, his exams are somewhere between average to easy. Form a group or teach yourself.
Tonghai is the worst 95% of the time.
I took calculus in high school and got an A, and I am struggling because of the way he teaches, and the TA I have is not helpful at all. I wouldn't recommend this prof.
I took calc in high school, so I wasn't overly challenged by the material covered in his class. The class is structured well, and there are numerous chances for extra credit (precalc reviews, research papers, ext). Very hard to follow sometimes in lecture, and he likes to write useless proofs on the board. Tests are easy. Not a bad teaching option.
He uses a lot of theory and talks way faster than I can even think. He loves math a lot and its easy to tell this, but he is just not good a teaching the concepts in simpler terms.
Can't understand a word he says. I've been teaching myself all semester.
Very hard to understand. Confusing lectures but gives lots of extra credit.
Hard to understand. Explains things in difficult roundabout ways. Confusing teaching style. Hard to understand.
