as 3 credit lit classes go this was not easy per se - lots of readings you actually have to read/understand. but he is honestly great, he does cold call everyday but its lighthearted. idek how to describe him. he's kind of insane in a good way. if you're actually interested in the topic take 303, if you want no work maybe look elsewhere.
Incredibly rude and unhelpful. He clearly has favorites and if you're not one of them you might as well drop the class. Expects you to put ALL your time into his class regardless of jobs, classes or illness. Shames you in front of everyone if you do not answer correctly or quickly enough. Tests are confusing and he changes schedule without saying.
Cares so much about his students and French literature. Could not have asked for a more interesting and fun class. Yes, there is work but he makes it easy for you to want to do the work if that makes sense. Such a fun class I loved it.
Dude is insane but lowkey chill at the same time. He's always in a rush yet somehow never late for anything. He seems to have 48 hours in a day with all the effort he puts in.
Jan Miernowski is an incredibly passionate professor. He genuinely loves & cares about the literature he selects. His expectations are clear & his enthusiasm is contagious. Lots of reading, but if you prepare, class discussions will be fun, interesting, & enhance your experience with the text. His course was totally the highlight of my semester.
he sucks. I never had such a bad professor at the UW. He speaks way too fast, randomly calls on you and shames you if you don't know the answer. His grading criteria is super unclear, and clearly has favorites. He expects you to meet up with him when it's not class time - and he doesn't care if you have other classes or jobs.
Lectures consist of people being constantly called on which is hard when you are confused about material. He seems to think that lack of understanding perfect french is you not doing the readings. He speaks pretty fast but by the end of the class you feel accomplished for understanding him. His quizzes are so specific. Inconsistent grading as well.
Easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. He cares about your work and you, and provides great constructive criticism. He tries to learn the name of every student and that says a lot!
I LOVE JAN! He is a wonderful, enthusiastic, and generous guy. He truly cares for his students and French philosophy. It may take time to warm up to him. He does cold-call, but it is all in good fun. It is important to pay attention in lectures and read to do well on the quizzes and essays. Overall, great class and was an even better professor.
I took Prof. Miernowski for his LitTrans302 class which was not a french course. The prof. does his best to learn everyone's name and encourage participation. This means randomly calling on people, and discussion posts, but he usually just laughs it off if you don't know an answer. He is a generous grader and very attentive to his students.
He will call on you randomly and there are quizzes and papers every week. He does not have a lot of patience and you MUST show up to class. He is also very strict on grammar. I would not recommend him
This was my HARDEST class in college. Midterms had 100ish terms to memorize (you have to understand context, years, and significance) and the final was CUMULATIVE- its study guide was 9 pages with 50 possible essay questions. THIS CLASS WAS BASICALLY MY RELIGION due to its workload and the stress it caused me. I loved Jan but HATED this class.
I enjoyed this class with Professor Miernowski but this class is very fast-paced and can be stressful because if you don't read he can sense it and will call on you to humiliate you for not knowing the answers. His grading was very fair and you even get to drop one of your test grades in this class. Jan is very passionate about the material!!
Jan has the potential to be a great professor, and sometimes is. He knows his material but he'll call out his students during class which is super uncomfortable. He is not flexible at all, but again, knows what he's doing. TEST HEAVY remember 100 plus terms and do essay questions, quizzes every week, must read and annotate or he'll find you.
I never had less than an A in a French class before this. Exams/quizzes require you to know exact quotes from multiple readings. Randomly calls on you in class even if you don't raise your hand, so be prepared and always pay attention. Also, if he knows you're struggling, he will HOUND you to keep answering. Speaks very quickly; hard to follow.
I love Jan. He has been so nice and very engaging in the class. He loves what he teaches without a doubt. Also the first time I have had a French professor that speaks with an authentic accent and knows how to speak the language how it should be. He can be annoying when he expects you to know exactly where a quote was in a book with no time to look
The hardest class I've ever taken in college. Ton of HW, quizzes every Friday. Three big tests you have to remember 100ish terms each for no lie. Hard to retain material unless you put your heart and soul into it. Not to mention he'll call you out in front of class on irrelevant details and not annotating your readings. Run far far away.
Amazing teacher, has great energy. Make sure you do the readings and prepare for class because he WILL call on you and expect you to have an answer for his questions. Sometimes hard to understand his questions but if you ask for clarification he's very helpful. Very nice man, hope to take more classes with him.
Very knowledgeable and helpful professor. Very receptive to student questions and always there to help outside class. Greatly improved my French. It took a week or two to get used to his fast-paced teaching style but after that I found this to be a very interesting course. Participation is important but easy if you do your reading.
I loved Jan. He's so full of energy and bounds around the room during class. He's clearly very passionate about French, and he's hilarious - class usually flew by! However, make sure you do the readings, because he WILL call on you and ask you lots of questions about them! Tests were also kind of hard.. but worth it! Take his class to learn lots.
He is the most energetic professor I've ever had. Make sure you do the readings because HE WILL call on you! Also be careful on your grammar with his essays but overall a really fun teacher!
Professor Miernowski is a very engaging teacher. He is extremely willing to help students and grades fairly. Borderline over-enthusiastic about French literature, but his class is never boring.
Prof. Miernowski is awesome! His passion for the subject is contagious-classes go by really quickly. You do need to know a LOT of material for exams, and make sure you come to class prepared b/c he will call on people to make sure you're paying attention. A hard class, but he is always available to give extra help outside of class as well.
Can't believe anyone could hate on my man J-eazy. One of the best classes offered by the French Department, if you want to take a class with someone who truly cares about what they are teaching, this one is for you. If you don't like French or reading, I advise you stay away.
You will never be bored in his class. Prof. Miernowski is a giant ball of energy, and his enthusiasm truly is contagious, even though you're basically looking at long lists of dates and names. But as long as you've got those memorized, you're golden for tests, and he gives weekly quizzes to make sure that you're constantly reviewing the material.
took this class a long time ago, but he was great! very fair grader, took time to answer questions and did not make you feel uncomfortable in class. very organized- LOVES powerpoint.
Nice guy, but feedback on papers was slim, and participation was rated based on solely on the number of times you raised your hand in class. Too much time spent lecturing as opposed to group and pair discussion. One of the worst classes I had.
Kind of tough during class, calls on you and waits until you answer, but such an effective teacher and so entertaining ... the class flies by for me
