He's nice and knows his history, he's just not great at getting the information across. His powerpoints aren't helpful and the presentation he accompanies them with tends to get off topic or turns into rambling--half the time I wasn't sure what to write down out of what he was saying. Jumped from topic to topic. There was also lots of reading.Rate My Professors ↗

Class was enjoyable but not what I signed up for. Wasn't a survey of Caribbean history/society, instead focused on specific topics. Lots of reading. Several short papers with one long paper at the end. Professor was nice and helpful but left the class up to the students a lot. He definitely knew a lot about the subject so I wish he shared more.Rate My Professors ↗

Such a difficult class. Discombobulated lectures and difficult to follow without prior knowledge. Readings were long and complex and central to testing. I have never been more discouraged and frustrated by a course. Scarano is a nice guy who's very passionate about Puerto Rico and teaching, but severely overestimates how much background one hasRate My Professors ↗

As an auditor in this class I was never allowed to contribute to the class in any way. When I approached him about auditing another class the next term, he said "no" beacause I was too intimidating, due to my age, that I was not only older than their parents but the age of their grandparents. Due to my age I was not welcome.Rate My Professors ↗

A lot of weekly benchmarks with a final paper of 25 pages. It wasn't easy, but Scarano is a nice dude that's willing to help, and definitely knows what he's talking about.Rate My Professors ↗

Scarano is really passionate about Caribbean history and very willing to help. He has a tendency to get off topic during lecture sometimes, which can be annoying. Quite a bit of reading, but mostly pertinent. I recommend the class in general, but especially for history majors who want to get their ethnic studies requirement done.Rate My Professors ↗
