Above average CS professor. Funny, knowledgeable, a bit condescending, and doesn't just repeat previous years' homework. However, beware OS security. Had to learn re-learn assembly with 3 weeks left. It is THE HARDEST UNIT and he saves it until the end and had over half the endterm on it. Also participation is a bit subjective. HW5 was a blast tho.Rate My Professors ↗
I was so excited to take this class (Information Security), but Earlence Fernandes is just NOT a good teacher. He'll spend 10 minute wasting time on something irrelevant, and speed through confusing material. Hard to keep up, and overall not a good speaker. Approximately 100 "uhms" and "ahs" per minute, making it very hard to pay attention.
Earlence by far exceeded expectations in every aspect: lectures that you didn't mind listening to, enjoyable / valuable homework, and great jokes. By FAR my favorite professor I ever had in UW Madison CS. Took this course during the beginning of COVID so we were 75% in person and 25% online. I was expecting the typical boring CS professor that has long drawn out lectures going over mundane and useless terminology, but Earlence was different. He took Information Security and looked at it from a top down view giving you a basic overview of many core topics, keeping it on the high level.
