I had a general good time with Professor Hittinger. He was able to explain complex topics quickly and effectively. Despite doing worse than I would have liked in the course, I did learn a ton from him. My only two complaints were the lack of partial credit on his exams, especially on the questions that required multiple calculations.
You have to write a discussion post and respond everyweek, plus read a paper and write a summary, significance statement and relevant questions with each being only one sentence but under 50 words. They are heavily scrutinized, so if you think something is less important about the paper, think again. There is also a group project. DONT MISS CLASS
Hittinger was very passionate about his subject and explained it well. His exam was a good mix of common sense questions about significant figures, and calculations. The exam followed his previous exam format so be sure to look over the one he posts. He was funny, but overall just pretty boring and moved fast. The calculations are not hard at all.
Dr. Hittinger overall is a good lecturer. He sometimes talk a bit too fast, and it spend me some time to follow. However, the slide is very clear and give you 90% of the information that would be on the exam.
He is one of the worst professors I've ever had at UW. Monotone voice and teaches extremely irrelevant material during lectures that is not even remotely close to the material that is tested on the exam. Exam questions mostly fill in blank calculations with zero partial credit given, even if you are within 0.001 margins. Do not take him!
Dr. Hittinger was a great facilitator for weekly discussions and question + answer sessions about the assigned paper. He was a fair grader and very accessible outside of class. Grades are based on a weekly summary, participation, and one large paper. Super interesting course
Prof Hittinger & Tilmann teach this class, w/ Hittinger teaching one unit. The exam for it was somewhat different than what was pointed out in lectures (as were all the other exams given by Tilmann). Hittinger enjoys his topic greatly and was excited to teach us about it. Up to 3 points EC, and they did curve the class at (on top of the exam drop)
Very helpful in office hours. Informative and detailed explanations of concepts that help you connect topics in the class to other related subjects.
He teaches the second half of 467, and much like the first half its a lot of material and your grade is based only on midterms and the final. He isnt the best lecturer Ive had but generaly tries to involve students in the lecture which is helpful when the content gets slightly boring. If you work hard from the start an A is possible.
Chris is an ok lecturer, but he's boring. The amount of content expected to be memorized for each quiz is ridiculous and the final is ridiculous. TAs are incompetent with grading and Chris doesn't care. The whole class structure is horrible. I emailed several times about regrading and got nothing. I would use profanity in this review if I could.
Hittinger seems like a cool guy to hang around with but he's generally not a good lecturer. He doesn't plan out his lectures well so he's always running behind but doesn't adjust for the 6 quizzes so he has to rush through the last 1-2 lectures. Also,a lot of material he presents is unimportant.
Professor Hittinger was an awesome professor. If you're in 467 doing the assigned problems and understanding them is the key to success in this class. He was always more than happy to give help outside of class to those who asked for it.
I never knew what to study for exams. I often did not know what I was supposed to know. Got behind schedule by a whole lecture early on so the schedule was crunched the entire semester. Exam averages went way down when his exams came up, but the practice exam somewhat mirrored the actual exam. READ the textbook if you want to do good!
He is very good at explaining although he can ramble on about certain parts or make little comments about noble prize winners and history. Also his exam is very straight forward and he definitely uses parts from the homework. I did great on his exams with little to no studying; just go to lecture and do his practice exams. HW recommended
DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS. That's the whole test pretty much. He rambles a lot and is obviously here to do research and not teach.
Seemed like a professor that was only there so he could do research. Felt like he expected everyone in the class to have had a research position before hand. Definitely do the practice problems and read the book, because his lectures are not very helpful.
A helpful, intelligent professor. He's funny but he sometimes has trouble explaining some concepts. Otherwise, the tests are fair. As long as you do the textbook problems and review the study guide, you'll do fine.
Very smart professor. Always knows detailed information about the subject. Come to class prepared to take notes, as there is a lot of information. Tests get at the concepts instead of just memorized info.
Great Professor. Very helpful if you're having trouble, and very knowledgable about the subject.
Terrible. Just terrible. He knows the information but does not know how to teach it. Unclear on what you need to know and about 2/3 of the lecture information is irrelevant. Good luck to anyone that has to get through this terrible class.
Horrible, Confusing, Boring. Gave us practice exam in which 90% of the problems were crossed out due to being irrelevant. To avoid getting this comment deleted I'll stop there.
Great professor. I love his sense of humor. He is extremely helpful and very nice in office hours. His exams are very fair. He frequently uses slides from another professor that are very confusing, so you really have to dissect these and make them your own. Put time and effort into this class and you will be fine.
Easily the worst professor I've ever had. I recommend dropping the course before taking it with him.
Terrible professor! Lectures are confusing and filled with useless information. Unclear about what you need to know. Exams are terrible. Good luck to all who are dumb enough to take his class.
