About this rating

Raw average: 3.20/5 from 10 quality ratings. The adjusted rating blends this with the UW review average (3.66/5), weighted as 20 additional ratings. Smaller samples stay closer to that average. Each captured review is counted once in the prior; this does not correct who chooses to leave a review.

Definitely need to put in work to get an A in this class, but it was never overwhelming. I liked her since she was understanding as long as you communicated with her on outside conflicts. I didn't have an issue with her grading, but it is definitely helpful to take good lecture notes to refer back on once you are writing the essays.

Prof. Vila's accent is... not the best. But other than that, I found this to be a fair and engaging class. She facilitated good class discussions and was very open to questions and comments. Readings were a bit long, but the other homework wasn't bad at all. You could tell she cared about the material and her students' success.

Quality 2/5Difficulty 2/5
While Professor Vila has a very good understanding of French grammar, her pronunciation is less than stellar, making her difficult to understand and learn from. In general, she is not receptive to new or different interpretations of text. You say what she thinks or you lose points.

Her accent is hard to understand. She babies the class and will fill the silence if no one answers her question and doesn't call on people who don't raise hands. Lots of homework, but she assigns it haphazardly so I don't always know what to do. The readings are a bit childish and she doesn't spend enough time on grammar for how hard she grades it.

I had little interest in French literature prior to taking this course. However Professor Vila made it enjoyable through her teaching style and grasp of the material.

Quality 2/5Difficulty 5/5
Professor Vila's grammar is impeccable but her accent is excruciatingly horrible. She isn't open to student thoughts or opinions, especially if they differ from hers. She is an extremely harsh grader, and she grades arbitrarily. She refuses to help solve the issues that were causing students trouble, even if they went into her office.
