What you’ll be able to do

  • Explore the role of the piano in the jazz ensemble and its relationship to other instruments.

  • Construct idiomatically appropriate jazz chord voicings and walking bass lines from chord symbols supplied in a lead sheet format.

  • Perform stylistically appropriate melodies and accompaniments in medium swing, jazz ballad, Bossa Nova, and jazz waltz styles.

  • Perform two independent parts (two of: bass line, chord comping, and melody/improvisation) simultaneously (one in each hand), and include rudimentary improvisation in their performance.

  • Continue their development of sound technical skills for the piano through their work with scales, arpeggios, and repertoire.
