Disturbance Ecology Lab (i): Herbivores and Fire
Hands-on lab course exploring natural and anthropogenic disturbances in forest ecosystems, emphasizing herbivores, fire, and management strategies.
Summary
Recent recorded grades — Spring 2024: 4.00 GPA, 100.0% A/AB (n=12 letter grades); Spring 2025: 3.93 GPA, 100.0% A/AB (n=15 letter grades); Spring 2026: 3.95 GPA, 95.0% A/AB (n=20 letter grades).
What you’ll be able to do
Discuss the importance of disturbance for ecosystem processes (e.g., nutrient cycling, biodiversity, soil development, etc.)
Describe the effect of herbivores and fire on local forest habitats.
Identify native and non-native members of local forest ecosystems and explain how they respond to herbivory and fire.
Explain how population and community dynamics of plants are influenced by disturbance, stress, and species interactions.
Formulate novel hypotheses related to declining forest understory biodiversity, design experimental protocols to falsify those hypotheses, and communicate research proposals in oral and written forms to a scientific audience.
Apply basic ecological laboratory and field techniques to understanding ecological principles.
