What you’ll be able to do

  • Explain basic economic concepts such as scarcity, opportunity cost, supply and demand, market failure, and national income accounting relationships.

  • Describe U.S. fiscal/monetary institutions and functions.

  • Recognize how households and firms respond to incentives and make economic decisions, and apply marginal analysis and cost-benefit analysis in a variety of settings.

  • Identify sources of long-run economic growth and short-run economic fluctuations, and evaluate policy tools for addressing both.

  • Identify and apply mathematical models to answer microeconomic and macroeconomic questions.

  • Interpret economic data, and express relationships among economic variables verbally, graphically, and numerically.

  • Read current news articles and recognize and critique economic arguments.
