Honestly, a 2.6 seems quite low for him. I enjoy his lectures; yes, they're premade but it's laid out very clearly. I think he genuinely cares about how his students, it's just up to you to reach out for help. He's a nice guy and doesn't make you feel stupid when you ask questions. I would be in his class for ochem 2 if I could. He's a solid 3.5

Professor Hermans wasn't the best lecturer, and you could tell he was just reading off the pre-made slides with little care to effectively teach. He's not very enthusiastic and just doesn't seem to care about his students or their standing in the class.

This professor did not act like he wanted his students to pass. I would not recommend.

Not to be harsh but Prof Hermans was the worst lecturer Ive ever had. He taught OChem off of a powerpoint slide, sped through important content calling it obvious, and called out students in class for asking for help/a study guide. He ripped dad jokes a lot which I appreciated but I highly recommend taking a different professor.

Prof. Hermans rarely draws mechanisms on the board, but instead uses powerpoints as the main teaching tool. He is very knowledgeable about the subject, but blasts through the slides way too fast for anyone to get anything useful out of lecture, even if you looked at the slides before class.

By far, one of the worst professors I have had during my college career. Usually, I try to try be fairly open-minded, but I honestly learned nothing from this course. He usually breezes past critical information that will appear on the exam. Also he blames students for their poor performance on the exams. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Professor Ive makes it VERY clear from day one that if you are not willing to work hard, you won't do well (and he doesn't sugar coat this). If you are a bit sensitive to harsh criticisms, you may not be encouraged by his way of pushing his students to perform better. However, he means well and wants to see his students succeed.

I should have dropped this class immediately like the other reviewer have said. He no longer records lectures cause it hurts attendance. I am not sure what resources everyone says he supplies. You get his power points copy and pasted out of the textbook, and worksheets with no worked out solutions. He provides no in depth examples on look back on.

He writes absurdly difficult exams, and then blames the students for not working hard enough when the average is low. He also just reads from powerpoint slides. Just take a different professor if you can.

DROP THIS CLASS IF YOU HAVE IVE HERMANS He is the worst professor I have had in my entire career. He berates/belittles students and pokes fun at student's mental health. He has no concern for student's wellbeing, facilitates a very toxic learning environment and constantly blames low exam averages on "students not working hard enough."

At first I felt like Professor Hermans was sort of mean, but I think he just expects a lot from students and genuinely wants students to do well. You must go to his office hours. This is a hard class, but the resources to succeed are there, you just need to take advantage of them. I don't think he makes the material harder than a different teacher.

Professor removed curve for class because he was disappointed with low scores. When students ask questions he mocks them for not already knowing the answer, and, instead of answering the question, suggests that they should've figured it out for themselves 2 weeks ago. Tests are harshly graded. Questions are all or nothing. Can score -15 on exams.

If you get this guy for chem345 you drew the short end of the straw. He is just honestly bad at teaching. Test seem fair. Just try and read the book and do your best to find another profs video lectures on the media space.

Prof. Hermans is a nice guy, he just is not a good lecturer at all. He teaches from powerpoint slides, and then specifically tells you *not* to take notes during class. The lectures are available online, which is helpful, but because they are taken right from the book, they aren't taught well. Also, your entire grade is based on 4 exams.

Generally I HATE any chemistry course but I have to say this one changed my mind. Ive is hilarious and provides many resources for students success, as well as being readily available and encouraging student to see him for help after class. He tends to go extremely fast during lecture, but always posts lecture videos online to make up for it.

Ive was pretty sarcastic, which I found amusing, but his humor often came off as rude to students who weren't doing as well. I almost never went to lecture after the first month and instead watched Prof. Bowman's videos posted on the Canvas site. The exams were nothing like the practice exams.

Imagine you take a Spanish class. You study the material very well and go in for the final. The final turns out to be written in German. That is the best way I can describe Ive's class.

He is difficult to understand and barely explains things as he writes them out. He doesn't write his own exams and they are nothing like the practice exams. The entire class is based on exams and he doesn't seem to care about his students. He is the worst professor I've had on campus.

Ive is a very intelligent humorous person, but sometimes that humor comes off as sarcastic so dont feel too bad if he makes fun of you. If you want a good grade in this class you need to go to lecture and do all of the problem sets and practice tests. O chem is a generally hard subject but if you work had you can do well with Ive.

The tests are super hard (I failed my first one), but if you put in the work (do the reading, the recommended practice problems, and give yourself adequate time to study before tests) you should do fine! Highly recommend studying with friends, it's very helpful when you need a concept to be explained in an easy to understand way.

Not a good prof. I stopped going to lecture by November, and in fact my test grades improved immensely. Read the textbook HEAVILY. Lab is worth a lot so try very hard during those. the curve is generous at the end of the semester

Hermans is not the professor for students that do not have a good sense of humor. For people taking this class, yes, it is challenging and it's supposed to be so don't be surprised. I thought Hermans was a wonderful professor as he incorporated his sense of humor and occasional chemistry rants into lecture while still maintaining focus on topics.

Professor Hermans is a fine professor. He is a funny and nice guy. As long as you read the book and do the practice exams you will be fine in this class. Every point matters. I averaged a 78% on exams but still ended with an A because of the curve at the end (ours was 3% (30 points)), and the free points from all the homework.

Hermans expects you to have read ahead in the textbook to know how to do a lot calculations, etc. before you come to lecture. The class is a lot of outside work and I had to teach myself a lot. Would only recommend if you are a VERY hard worker or VERY good at chem and like it a lot. I still got a good grade but it was a lot of work.

If you did not take AP Chem in High School, then I would not recommend this class. Ive does a good job teaching the material in a clear and concise manner. His accent can be thick at times, so just sit near the front and you'll be fine. Study for the tests, read the textbook, and do all the work assigned and you will do well in the class.

Deep accent and you can hear nothing if you seat at the back. Hardly read a single word he writes on the board, never see such handwriting. He doesn't explain things well. If I haven't taken AP courses, I can barely understand nothing he talks, literally I mean that. Take this class only if you are brave enough.

Very arrogant and does too many assumptions in how much you as a student already know. His exams are very difficult, though he does let you choose which questions on the exam to answer. Puts too much emphasis on how to derive formulas used, and not what they actually mean.

One on one he is not as intimidating, however the class was not laid out very well. You definitely have to teach yourself from the book, and even then it seems like its not enough - tests are very difficult, you may know the information but they will not give you full credit because you didn't explain it in depth enough.

Good professor overall, lectures are kinda boring, tests are hard, even if you study a lot. Book is very helpful, but not a substitute for lecture as not all the lecture is covered in the book. Pay attention in lecture

Hermans is extremely intelligent, although that doesn't necessarily translate to his teaching abilities. He regurgitates the textbook mostly, but I did find the lectures to be helpful. He has a thick accent, which isn't helped by his messy handwriting. He is very passionate about chemistry, and this made his class manageable (demos are awesome).

It was hard bc I didn't take AP Chem. I advise someone who didn't take AP Chem to NOT take this course unless they are extremely motivated to study and/or are passionate about chemistry. Hermans isn't great lecturer. His accent is thick. He mumbles and his handwriting is hard to read. So, sit in the front, ask good questions & have common sense.

The class was easy for me because I took Ap Chem and got a 5 on the test. If you have a lot of prior knowledge going into the class you will do fine. If you don't I'd recommend 103 because there is not much time given to each topic. Ive is not the greatest teacher, but could be worse. He mumbles and faces the board and it's unclear what's important

He could be a bit harsh at times. He criticized people for asking bad questions and as a result many people were afraid to ask questions. However, he did know what he was talking about. His handwriting was hard to decipher at times. While he was fine, I would recommend Moore, as he wrote the textbook you use.

A lot of work, but what do you expect with a 5 credit class? Lectures are boring, and he is extremely dry on topics he does not enjoy. I would attend Moore's lectures if I was to take the class over again. Reading chapters in the book corresponding to the outline is absolutely essential to understand lecture thoroughly.

Professor Hermans is a great lecturer. TA's also usually have online lecture notes so those are helpful. He's really funny and is good at keeping students engaged in the lecture. Strongly suggest office hours, but know exactly what you want to ask. Very helpful, and personally I found the textbook to be very helpful. Pay attention to book problems.

Class is difficult to begin with but he made it tolerable. He is an average professor. His tests are near impossible if you don't study, but if you do, they make much more sense. He is from Belgium so he has a bit of an accent, but he is clear to understand in the front of the lecture hall. His handwriting is not the best so get a front seat.

Enjoyed this class

Honestly didn't really find the textbook in the class to be that useful and his lectures aren't always the most useful for tests as he goes over too specific of examples. The online portion of the homework/class is definitely the most useful.

Professor Hermans is extremely knowledgeable about chemistry and truly cares about students' success. His office hours are wonderful and he's a very friendly and approachable person. He has high standards and does not tolerate a lack of common sense, which I really like because he's preparing us for the real world. He also has great humor.

It's a very difficult class, but he makes the lectures interesting. He does have a bit of a Belgian accent, but he speaks pretty clearly so he's still fairly easy to understand. Be ready for terrible handwriting, though. It's a lecture of around 300 people, so it is understandable that I did not get much help from him personally.
