From a TA for Prof. Copelovitch: Students seeking a fair grade should avoid this class. He has a predetermined average for students & will redirect TAs to re-grade all material so that it comports with that average. You will not be graded as an individual. Most of my students deserved As. They did not receive them. I wish I'd fought back more.

Professor Copelovitch is highly intelligent and respected in IR and it shows in his lectures. Beware that the majority of your grade is from very long midterm essays that weren't super clear on grading criteria. I feel like I learned a lot from this class and would take another class with Professor Copelovitch.

I found him to be quite arrogant. The class was interesting, but he was very unclear about how expectations for the midterms/final and TAs gave little to no feedback, so it was difficult to improve. Not worth taking if you aren't a full IR nerd.

The lectures aren't mandatory but always excited to go. He plays music every class and makes the lectures super fun. I recommend going to office hours even when there isn't anything due just because he cares so much about meeting his students and wants to see them all succeed. Awesome teacher. Awesome dude.

I would take his course again if I could! Amazing professor who shows he is passionate about what he teaches. Take home exams and quizzes! He makes himself so reachable outside of class if you ever need him as well, and never stops showing how much he wants you to do well and understand the material in his course. Course is very interesting!

Copelovitch is probably one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. The intelligence does come with a bit of condescension, so don't be surprised if you feel patronized after asking questions in lecture. All tests are papers, specificity is a must. Still a good and helpful class, and you learn a ton that you can use in the political world.

Professor Copelovitch was great especially as a freshman class. Lectures were detailed and interesting and most of the information needed for exams is in the lecture material. The class was structured to have three written exams and the lectures and readings set you up great to do well on the exams. Textbook is definitely not necessary.

It wasn't a hard class, just pretty boring. I went to all the lectures in the beginning, but later just waited until lecture slides were posted. There are two midterms and a final. Not to difficult, just have to go through all of the lectures and readings with control find.

I really liked this professor - he explained many different categories of our learnings, used non-International Relations examples (including his own family) to make sure everything was clear, and his office hours at the union were really helpful. I thought I didn't care about the topics, but he made them really interesting and understandable.

It was just a boring class. Nothing else to say. He was definitely a nice guy and had a good perspective on the course, but it was just boring to sit through. Probably my own personal preference.

LOVED PROFESSOR COPELOVITCH!!! Not an international relations person myself, but Prof. Copelovitch makes it understandable and interesting. I felt like he really deepened my understanding of political science as a whole. Super nice guy as well!!

Solid professor, makes his class easy by having his tests and quizzes open note. Pretty funny too.

Amazing professor!! Take home midterms and finals and easy to understand lectures.

Very funny, personable, and understanding professor. Plays 3 songs before every class, and generally has a great sense of energy. Really tough to get an A if you don't get A's on midterms.

Prof. Copelovitch is an excellent lecturer and a good dude. The class taught textbook U.S. foreign policy, which, granted, is the dominant policy influencing the international global order. Still, I wish he would provide sources that respond to U.S. F.P. impacts and economic liberalism to make us more well-rounded IR scholars.

One of my favorite professors so far. All the exams are online and take home which is really nice and actually helped me learn. A really cool guy and has fun music before every class. Not necessary to go to class, but it will help as well as do the readings. Not a super hard class but a really fun one for poli sci. Highly recommend!

Great lecturer and funny professor. Lectures are very interesting and applicable. Lots of graphs, charts, and information on lectures. Lectures had "in the news" slides of new events related to the course. Readings are interesting/important but somewhat optional (some more optional than others). There were few exams and they were very reasonable.

Mark is an amazing professor that puts effort in to make his lectures engaging & funny, and is very approachable. He is a great guy and I would recommend his class to anyone that's interested. In the fall 2021 semester, the only work was a weekly quiz based off of a few readings, a few small assignments, and 3 exams, which were take-home essays.

best professor I've ever had. Would take another poli sci class with again

Exams are based heavily on lectures and pretty standard exams for the POLSCI department, but were take home with IDs and an essay. Interesting material if you get into it, but it's easy to get lost in lecture. Prof is really accessible outside of class, and has a great personality and a pretty decent sense of humor.

Absolutely phenomenal! He makes a great effort to apply real scenarios to every aspect of class and although there are lots of readings, all of them are relevant and interesting. He is also super kind and will make time for you outside of class. He honestly made me consider a major in polisci. Looking forward to taking another class with him!!

The class he taught itself was very interesting and the lectures were amazing. I had a lot of problems, though, with assignments. There were virtually no criteria to grading and the midterms/final were all take-home and incredibly time-consuming. There was very little help from the TAs and I would not take this again.

MC is a funny guy who is obviously very passionate about the things he teaches. Only downside to his class was the midterm and final structure, it was so time consuming and repetitive.

Professor Copelovitch is the best professor I have had in college. He is so knowledgeable in every aspect of this class, and it showed in every lecture. I found the content in this class to be extremely interesting, but even if the idea of international relations does not excite you, this is a phenomenal course because of Professor Copelovitch.

Super interesting class, definitely a class you have to work for! Lectures are engaging and fun and there are many opportunities to get good grades. Sometimes the weekly readings are long and confusing but overall, he does a good job of discussing the main theme of the readings in lecture.

Lectures are interesting and engaging with lots of relevant examples and real-world stories. If you are interested in international relations this is a great starting point. If your looking for an interesting class for some credits, this is still a great class.

MC is a solid professor. He's personable and his lectures are informative and not terribly boring. I found the PS140 material engaging and learned a lot in his class despite having taken it during Covid.

Prof. Copelovitch had informative lectures that were easy to understand and you could tell he's really passionate about what he teaches. Super approachable, actually cares about his students, and lectures had fun connections to pop culture that helped make the content less intimidating. Would definitely recommend, TAs were super helpful too.

Amazing professor overall. There is a lot of course material and you will have to spend a decent amount of time on this class if you want a decent grade, but the professor is very accessible and helpful in explaining concepts or clearing up any information.

I took Professor Copelovitch's PS140 class this semester. It was a slightly tough class, but he was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his material and tried to make the lectures engaging with music and pop culture. I learned a lot in this class and would recommend Prof. Copelovitch to hardworking students, because it's not an easy A.

Prof. Copelovitch has a lot of really informative and fun lectures, even though they were all online and pre-recorded. His office hours were always great to attend, and he was very clear with answering questions. Also, if you're someone looking for an apolitical prof, he goes out of his way to use sports teams metaphors over political metaphors.

Really enjoyed Professor Copelovitch's Intro to International Relations course this semester. He's a brilliant mind, revered in his field of study, and it is easy to recognize his passion for what he does, something great instructors seem to have in common. Awesome lecturer too! Looking forward to taking another one of his courses in the future.

Mark is such a nice guy. You can tell that he cares about his students. His lectures are always really interesting and current.

LOVED marks lectures! So interesting! The mood was also kept light and fun (when appropriate). The class overall was hard though - definitely do the readings...

Contrary to what some have said, I think the content was extremely approachable. I stopped reading the textbook halfway through the class and found the lectures and discussions alone were more than enough. (Read the articles though, sometimes he references them directly on tests) interesting lecturer, I actually was excited to go to class.

Best professor I have ever head. Definitely knows what he is talking about. The class is not too hard if you study and look over the vocab. He makes lectures super interesting and I actually liked going to class.

Mark was very knowlegable about his subject. This is not a class you can write off. You have to work hard at it. Attend lecture and dicussions and do all of the readings. Tests pull from all of these areas. Overall, content was interesting, just different from what I expected going into the course.

+ Thoughtful and cool course!! Covers current issues with cool theories! + Mark is thoughtful and approachable. + IDs on exams covered large topics that were straightforward to prepare. + Multiple choice questions on exams were fair. - Financial portion of class can be hard to understand. - Readings take a while at times.

Copelovitch is smart and very reasonable. But do not skip lecture or discussion. Lecture covers the strong majority of the content, if not all, and is definitely helpful for the tests. Take notes and pay attention. Discussion helps clear up anything that wasn't clear in lecture and the TA's are equally wonderful.

Only things you are graded on are two midterms, the final, and discussion participation. I personally found his lectures very boring; very content heavy and somewhat confusing. Tests were difficult, involved multiple choice and writing sections.

I really enjoyed taking polisci140 with Mark. The class is challenging, but he does a great job explaining and making sense of the material. There is a fair amount of reading but it applies to what you learn in class. Mark makes lectures engaging and definitely worth going to (you miss a lot if you skip) and is very knowledgable in his field.

Definitely read the weekly articles, but if you're interested in poli sci and IR, I'd recommend his class. He knows what he's talking about (sometimes to the point where he speaks above my personal pay-grade) and he's done a lot of research in the field - especially in IPE. Plus he always makes sure to keep the lecture entertaining and humorous.

Lectures were interesting and engaging. Although, the exams were difficult. Be ready to attend every lecture and do all of the readings if you want an A.

Copelovitch is a great professor. The material is very interesting and he does a great job at explaining it. The exams are all about the information covered in lecture and some of the readings. He's got a great sense of humor and talks about a lot of current issues. I would also recommend going to discussion.

Nice guy. Super smart, and has done a lot of research that he is able to talk about during lectures. The class itself is difficult (7% to 15% As on the exams) but you learn a ton about how the international relations works. I enjoyed the class, but if you're looking for a blowoff class this aint it.

Copelovitch manages to fit a lot of information into a short amount of time without making the class feel overwhelming. I learn a lot in his class and he is very accessible outside of class as well. Recommended for sure.

He's very renowned in the field of IR and just overall a great professor. When I go to lecture sometimes I just sit back like I'm at a movie theatre because that's how much I enjoy them--very captivating. Go to class because there are details in lecture that are important for the exam, and he makes things from the book a lot easier to grasp. great!

He gives an expansive background of International Relations. Very clear grading and class structure. He had a few reviews before finals, which were very helpful.

This class was somewhat interesting, but Professor Copelovicth throws you a lot of info during lectures (which are power lectures and get boring). The tests were some multiple choice which were confusing and then short answers which were graded by the TAs.

Prof. Copelovitch was an amazing instructor. His lectures, although long, were extremely interesting. He was very clear on what he expected out of his students. Read, go to discussion and lecture, and pay attention. You have to work for an A, but as long as you do those things, you're on the right track.

I took Intro to International Relations and really enjoyed it. He's very passionate about the subject matter and makes long lectures engaging and easy to follow. The course is graded on two midterms, the final, and participation. The tests are very fair if you do all the outside readings, go to lecture and discussion, and take good notes.

2 midterms and a final. The first test is 20% of the grade, 2nd is 25%, final is 35%. The rest is participation from discussion. There are weekly readings and there are a lot of them. Professor Copelovitch is a nice guy and is easily accessed in office hours.

Copelovitch is very well respected and clearly insanely knowledgable and passionate about what he teaches. The power lectures can seem long, but there's pretty much no homework for 140 besides reading 2 articles before discussion. Exams are very fair; if you study hard and participate well in discussion you will get a good grade!

Makes what could be dry material consistently compelling, even funny much of the time. Passionate about the material (especially international finance). Supplemental readings were sometimes important for tests

Kind of boring but very knowledgable. Every once in a while will land a good joke but super knowledgable about topic

Prof. Copelovtich was one of the best professors I've ever had. He is very knowledgeable about the field of international relations, and his lectures are very clear. He is approachable and more than happy to help his students out with understanding the material. You will have to work hard for an A, but I highly recommend taking this class with him.

Great professor, but his exams were pretty difficult and there were no other grades besides exams and participation. The material is a bit hard for a 100-level class, but go to lectures and do the readings and you'll be fine. He's very good about being accessible to answer questions.

Amazing teacher knows the topic extremely well, be sure you don't fall behind on the readings if you want to do well.

Such an amazing professor. His class was very interesting and relevant to the real world. Late afternoon power lectures weren't always the most enjoyable, but you learn a lot of interesting topics in that 75 minute period. Exams are very fair. Definitely would recommend 10/10

Copelovitch was much better than I was expecting. The lecture slides could get long but he tries to spice it up a little. As someone else stated my TA Sujeong wasn't very helpful which made the class a little harder. Other than that, the tests are very fair, I was actually surprised at how fair they were. I would recommend.

Copelovitch is a really smart guy but doesn't condescend. Thats an underrated skill that some professors don't have. Strong lecturer with some humor mixed in. Definitely go to receive a good grade. Widely considered one of the better IR minds in the Big Ten.

Prof. Copelovitch is the kind of guy who just sounds smart. He opens his mouth and every single sentence is constructive, well thought-out, and backed up. The lectures can get long, and the in-class notes are plentiful, but slides are online and he is exceedingly helpful in his office hours. The readings are quite manageable and tests are very fair

Hard to evaluate this prof. because it is hard to separate opinion of him with the TA. My TA (Sujeong) is not great, so that is a huge downer. Had to take this course to fill a requirement. Not done with the course yet, but it is just ok.

This class is awesome! The tests can be quite difficult at times, a lot of writing, but he really knows what he is talking about! He is also very approachable and loves to help out students.

Great guy, lecturer, and professor! I loved this class and took it for personal benefit, not for my major. It is not difficult to get an AB but definitely attend lecturediscussion and read the material. Lectures can get long at times but I really enjoyed the overall course content. Tests are very, very fair but require some studying.

A great and interesting professor. Read the book and study the lecture slides and you will do fine!

Big fan of this guy and this class. Exams are fair and material is interesting! Makes you think about the world through a historical perspective and a contemporary one.

Mark is a great professor. Even with an hour and fifteen minute lecture, he manages to keep things interesting and pertinent to real life. I would highly recommend this course, especially for economics and political science majors. Overall he is a great guy and a fantastic professor. Class is difficult but you will learn so much its worth it.

Very good professor, I learned a ton. Probably a bit harder than other poli sci courses of a similar level, but don't let that deter you.

Challenging course but is completely doable if you put in the time and effort. Copelovitch is one of the best and a great resource for mixing political science and economics. Highly recommended.

He is a great professor. He is approachable and friendly and tries to make the class laugh. He makes a very complicated topic very understandable. Highly relevant and interesting course material. He always asked if anyone had questions. One of my favorite classes at UW.

Great professor, class is very applicable for the world we live in today and how we got to this point.

Prof Copelovitch is a really great professor. Lectures are very well organized, power point and readings all online. If you're interested in global poli economy and int relations, he is an unparalleled resource. The exams and essay(s) cover a lot of material, but w/ no surprises. He's a really nice guy and always willing to help. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
