Yayi Fu's math 340 was the most miserable experience thus far in my schooling. She does not have any original thoughts during class, she just very quietly speedruns the material on the TV while reading the 1:1 text from the textbook as if she's being held at gunpoint. By the end of the semester our lecture dwindled from ~150 to ~15.
Took this in the spring the lectures are b- quality but the final was way beyond the scope of the review and completely went over topics heavily studied in the class and was honestly frustrating to take
Truly terrible. Textbook proofs contradicted lecture proofs. She went against the traditional book Spivak that they always use. She actually whispers lectures, and what people are saying is true SO BORING. I self studied some logic and proofs but this was breezed over within 1 lecture... no intro to proof in an intro to proof course.
Her lectures can be boring as she talks without pauses, but her notes and announcements are clear and well-organized. She posts everything, including lecture recordings and notes, making it convenient to learn just by reading. She is kind, knowledgeable, and responds to questions quickly, both in person and on Piazza.
Lectures are very dense. I felt I learned so much from this class. Dr. Fu is very committed to rigor and correctness. I would not recommend this class if you have never done any proofs before, but if you have had some expose to proof writing I highly recommend. Exams and hwk are pretty easy.
The lectures are very dense, but her notes are really clear and hints are helpful to get fully understood. She replies piazza within minutes and is a kind grader. Math needs the process of individual thinking and hints when you are stuck, her notes perfectly help with this, at least for me.
Dr. Fu is clearly knowledgeable about the subject topic, and conveys it well. Homework is moderately difficult but outside help and resources are allowed, and grading is lenient. Tests use material you've seen before, and are easy if you've studied. Material from the textbook was used, but it was not necessary to have. Well-prepared for 521.
This is the worst math professor I had at UW-Madison. She does not explain any of the concepts; instead you writes on a pdf, and just has you copy it. That's it. The exams are memorization focused. No thinking for yourself. She uses an actual real analysis, even though this is more of a learn how to write proofs class. Go with the other professor.
Idk, she just doesn't explain anything intuitively. She is a boring lecturer. She just lectures and doesn't explain the why behind anything. You will basically have to teach yourself the intuition and everything. She is a nice person, but she is not a good professor.
Yayi Fu unfortunately only reads/fills out her PDF on her tablet, and does not really engage in the class. Nothing is explained intuitively, but instead through theorems, lemmas, and axioms. Lectures are brutally boring, and it makes me question why I should ever show up. The TA, Elizabeth Hankins, is super nice though! She is super helpful.
Just filling the pdf file, boring interaction in class. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!
The worst math teacher/teacher I've ever had in my life. I don't like being mean but she REALLY needs to change. Don't take this class if you dont have a tablet of some kind because the only notes are fill in the blank and she does not slow down EVER. She almost never explains anything and just reads from her PowerPoint.
