Dr Bill is passionate + knowledgable about environmental issues.Lectures are relatively focused but he gets side tracked which made the class get behind on lectures to the point where he would have to record a lecture to catch up.Main issue is there's not enough things to get graded on as the grade is only based on 2 essays, 3 MC exams, discussion

There were some issues with the class I took, which probably led to him getting a lower rating. He did mumble, but what made it impossible to hear was the fact that we were put in a music hall that had the worst echo. He also was not great with tech, so we were missing some lecture recordings. The content was cool and he was helpful through email.

His lectures are extremely hard to follow and I was confused as to why a lot of the material was even included in this course. Gartner seems very passionate about what he teaches but he does not teach it very well. The exams are WAY too specific. The only thing I enjoyed about the class was a few of the discussions because I did enjoy some topics.

His lectures are very hard to follow because he mumbles through all of his sentences and goes off on tangents. His lecture slides are not helpful and super vauge, so notetaking about what he say is very important. Even with extensive notes and all resources possible, his exams are a pain. Other weekly assignments do not help to budge your grade.

Super passionate and enthusiastic about what he teaches, but his lectures were hard to follow and he often went off on tangents that were kind of random. Slides were pretty vague and unclear. Grade is based on quizzes that were open book and two papers.

He clearly likes what he teaches, but is not exactly skilled in lecturing. By the end of the semester I think like only 10% of the class showed up to his lectures, pretty boring. Very easy class though, possible to do with just some background knowledge and occasional glancing at the slides before tests

be warned he is self-loathing and honestly just kind of weird in general: he cannot go 1 lecture without making fun of white men I promise. I pretty much fully stopped attending since he posts all of the lectures on canvas in a full video which is pretty awesome. However, I kinda wish he didn't do that so then I would actually have to go haha.

Gartner is v passionate about what he does and what he teaches. A lot of the content was interesting. But I took this to cover a GenEd and I regret doing so, as the class was a pain, and not an easy A. Readings are long and dry. Open note exams are very difficult even with good notes. You absolutely have to take notes on what he says in lecture.

Professor Gartner was a good lecturer. If you don't attend lectures, you won't do well on the exams. The exams were difficult and the questions were unnecessarily specific. Even though I attended all of the lectures, I found it difficult to get above a C on exams. Interesting class though.

I've had Gartner multiple times and he really is an amazing professor. I came to class with a major I hadn't been passionate about and he managed to completely flip my perspective. He's incredibly passionate about the subject material and was so supportive of me and my group's topic. He was flexible and understanding and he really helped me out!

We were given very little timely feedback and I ended with a project that I was not proud of. Lectures were dry and didn't help with the project as much as more attention and interactive work would have been. Bill is a very kind and thoughtful person and obviously cares about his students, but this class failed to meet my expectation of a capstone.

Bill definitely has a lot of wisdom and experience to speak of, but unfortunately he doesn't teach it well. His lectures are extremely disorganized, his powerpoints have almost no information to study, and I never know what to take notes on because there are so many tangents. Very smart and nice, but my least favorite teacher so far.

Gartner literally talks so incredibly slow. There was probably 5 hours of overtime recorded lecture this sem bc he couldn't get through the content during class. The first half of the class was terribly boring (on feudal times) and doesn't get interesting til the last few weeks. The exams are on what he says so you HAVE to pay attention to lecture

Passionate, knowledgeable guy. Definitely inspiring and makes students more passionate about the material themselves.

Dr. Gartner is my absolute favorite professor. He's passionate, knowledgable, and very respectful. I would recommend this course to ANYONE that's even remotely interested in the environment or social issues. The course is a great difficulty, not too much work, and you get so much out of it.

Professor Gartner is one of my favorite professors at UW-Madison. He is so kind, he really goes out of his way to help students and especially during the pandemic. The class is also super interesting, I am so glad I took it. I learned a lot and it was not too difficult. Make sure you go to his office hours, he is so nice!

He was truly a wonderful Professor to have for this capstone course, as he provided a lot of useful feedback on the project. Was great to set up times to meet outside of class for these discussions, especially given the issues of Covid. Helped to lead me to creating a great project and a fun semester-long class.

Show up and sit in the front row of every lecture. That's how you'll learn from this guy, and it's entertaining. Professor Gartner is passionate about what he teaches, and it shows through it his lectures. Great class! I highly recommend it.

He's passionate about his material, he's engaging in the small and uncomfortable science hall 180 room, and his classes talk about really interesting and impactful aspects to climate change I was unaware of. He tries to work in relevant humor and jokes (even if it doesn't always work) and always offers colorful commentary.

Gartner is a very fun professor, he really loves teaching and makes every class very exciting and easy to stay awake because of his energy. I found the exams to be difficult due to wording and his vocabulary choices. Your grade is only based off of 3 exams and weekly discussion papers you write as responses to online readings.
