Very fun class, but lots of readings. Exams are difficult and require understanding of readings/supplemental sources. Three movie nights are hosted throughout the year, and one is mandatory but I highly recommend going to as many as possible (you can use the movies on exams). Notes are required for readings every week and are collected randomly.
Classics 150 was a great time. I really enjoyed the course content and while the exams were pretty stressful (2 timed-essay style questions, with multiple prompt choices), they were very doable as long as you pay attention in lecture and do the readings! I would definitely recommend this class for anyone looking for a humanities credit.
Quite simply the best professor I've had up to date, he has quite a unique sense of humor, specially when it comes to macabre topics. Participation matters quite a lot in his class but everything is pretty straightforward, he gives great feedback and readings aren't too bad. I'd take a class no matter what topic simply if he is the one teaching.
Great prof, very passionate and knowledgeable about the material he teaches. There is LOTS of reading (L O T S) assigned so don't push it off till the last minute. Attend every lecture participate- it will really help you understand the material and boost your grade at the end of the sem. If you pay attention you won't have to study much for exams.
Dr. Brockliss did try to make a sometimes boring/confusing field semi-entertaining. There were a lot of opportunities for extra credit but it is important to attend all the lectures and participate every once in a while. He did provide very clear expectations for the midterms/final which was very helpful.
Meh class. Pretty damn boring, especially given the subject matter and it's potential. I second whoever said the class isn't "friendly" for people with anxiety. Better hope you get a good group for your group project, but the "tests" are very easy and mainly consist of writing an essay and answering some questions. You do have to participate.
Fun class, and he was an interesting lecturer who clearly cared about us and about the material. Our grades were almost entirely based off 3 in-class essays, but if you showed up and paid attention to the lectures they were very fair
I couldn't agree less with the couple of students who say that he isn't accommodating (especially to students with anxiety.) He is one of the most genuine and considerate professors I have ever had. You can tell he loves his job! His grading is very clear and he has detailed review sessions for the exams. Attendance and participation are graded.
This class is essentially a whole class discussion every session and participation is graded. If you do not like being cold-called, be wary of this course, as occasionally Prof B does. The class is interesting, as Prof B is engaging and personable, but requires quite a bit of reading, but the exams are easy if you come to class and take notes.
Professor Brockliss is super enthusiastic about what he's teaching and makes class enjoyable. He asks for feedback from students to better tailor the lectures to the classes needs. There is a lot of reading but you can skim through it and be fine. Awesome class to take for Humanities Credit. PS. He is British and has an accent 10/10
Prof. Brockliss is very enthusiastic about what he teaches and the class is always interesting. Be prepared to read A LOT. Grading is very lenient if you show effort. There are some group projects. The midterms/exam/paper is very straightforward. Enjoyable and stress-free class if you keep up with everything.
Professor Brockliss is amazing! The class was super interesting and the work was not very difficult. Midterm essays were quite straightforward if you have done a bit of the reading. He is very funny and accommodating if you need something or an extension. Highly recommend him and his monsters class!
William made this class super interesting and easy to follow along with. He gives his students many opportunities for extra credit and is a fair grader. He makes it crystal clear what he expects from his students to get a good grade. All in all I highly recommend this fun class with an awesome professor!
VERY accommodating in an extremely difficult course esp for kids with learning disabilities. Explains material well, gives good feedback, and is overall a nice and funny guy. But you CANT skip this class you NEED to do the work and there is no option to slack. Hes a tough (but always fair) grader, so you need to put in effort to get a good grade.
If you read a few pages of the homework and go to lecture and pay attention with one brain cell, you will pass this class easily. Just pay attention enough so you can write exactly what he says in lecture and you will easily get an A on the midterm essays. Also, no final, just a final paper that is easy enough.
I found him super understanding as far as the workload goes. Learning another language (especially an ancient one) can be very difficult, so definitely utilize office hours. He's usually willing to make certain accommodations, however he is also very limited because there's a very strict timeline to follow. If you fall behind, you'll stay behind.
Not considerate when working with students with disabilities, namely anxiety. Bad vibe overall.
I only took this for Comm B. Not too difficult, 2 papers and 2 presentations are majority of grade- time consuming work but an A is definitely possible. I found lectures boring but easy to sit through. A few opportunities for extras credit that will help boost the grade. Not the best Comm B out there but survivable. You can sparknotes most readings
Prof Brockliss is a very nice guy. If you listen in lecture and understand the gist of the reading, you will do perfectly fine. He also offered several opportunities for extra credit. There are two midterm papers taken in class, a group presentation and a final paper. You can pretty much repeat what he says in lecture and you'll get a good grade.
Overall I really liked the material, but Brockliss could make the most interesting topic in the world boring. Also be wary that if you write an opinion that he doesn't agree with in an exam or paper, he will count it wrong. He just wants students to repeat whatever he says on exams/essays.
Very fun and knows so much about classics! Definitely an interesting class and I learned a lot; good opportunity to read a lot of classics. But you do have to read all the books/plays/texts. Spends a bit too much time discussing logistics - like 10 minutes at the beginning of each class. Would still recommend. Also - group discussion during lecture
Super nice guy, always gives good feedback, very easy extra credit at the end of the semester that took me from an AB to an A. Very solid professor.
greatest comm b class in the campus ever! Professor is super great and willing to help others, class is interesting.
This is a really fun class if you are into monsters and stuff. You get to read about monsters in Greek and Roman mythology and later about more modern monsters. There is a lot of reading to do. Besides 2 midterms, the grade depends on participation and a group presentation. There is a paper instead of a final.
Cool guy, take him. Pretty funny and is there for you as well.
Readings aren't always necessary (SparkNotes and you'll be fine), but the professor is hilarious and super nice guy
Very entertaining and likable professor (with a British accent). There's a lot less in-depth thematic analysis than I was expecting (especially in discussion sections), so that made the class fairly easy. We had a 5 page paper and an 8-10 page paper, and we also had a 10 minute oral presentation to do in discussion section.
Intro Greek is pretty intense at Madison, and, while Brockliss really knows how to turn on the guilt machine, I'm glad to have had him for this class. He goes fast though, so you really have to keep up!
Brockliss is such a cool guy! His lectures are mandatory, but they are always pretty good. He makes class interactive and mixes it up with in-class activities to keep it interesting. Sometimes it feels like not much material is touched on during the lecture, but it doesn't matter since the class is easy! Take this class, it's the best Com B by far!
The class was fairly easy; a lot of reading and a fair amount of writing. However, Brockliss really knows his stuff and makes the class fun and interesting. He's always open to questions and suggestions. Best part of lectures are when he reads passages from plays in his awesome British accent. One of my favorite professors so far.
This is a very strenuous course however Brockliss is fantastic at teaching it. He knows everyone by name an is nice and answers any questions readily. He wants very much for his students to succeed. He is even humorous and the fact that he's British would make anyone want to go to class!
What a fantastic guy. He very clearly wants all of his students to succeed, and makes it very easy to do so. Quite enthusiastic, really encouraging of discussion, gives tons of great feedback on assignments, easy grader, and best of all, BRITISH.
He memorized all (75) of his students' names and always e-mailed us when we were absent to make sure we were caught up with homework. Quizzes, papers, and exams were writing-driven, but not too difficult if you paid attention to the images and themes covered in lecture. Very direct, helpful, and always made lectures interesting!
