Worst possible instructor--holy moly. Everything I needed to learn for STAT371, I learned senior year of hs. Thank God I took it, because Patel's lectures are mega confusing and tbh contribute nothing you need to know to do decent in his exams. The syllabus included a textbook to reference, but none of his lectures or homework referenced it AT ALL.
I took AP Stats and everything I knew was prior knowledge. The lectures were just in depth proofs that had no real meaning to the course. The syllabus was not accurate because he just shared one with other stats professors. The SLC couldn't help because his HW looked graduate level and was not aligned with the course. The TAs were amazing though.
His lectures were convoluted and filled with irrelevant "advanced" info that had no relation to the objectives of the course. About 90% of the info given to us was never tested and the information actually being tested was not taught well, resulting in ridiculously low test averages. I feel like I didn't learn anything; it was a waste of my time.
Is he a nice guy? Yeah probably. Is he a bad professor? Definitely. Overcomplicated an intro course, so many random proofs, lecture had no correlation to hw/exams, disorganized/incoherent lectures that left students scrambling to copy notes, no resources to prepare, not consistent with standard stats curriculum, stats LC could not help with hw.
Professor Patel is very nice outside of class BUT that man can't teach intro stats to save his life. Everything is theoretical, no connection between class, homework, and tests. Doesn't record lectures, very stingy about helping, often doesn't answer questions in a helpful way, discussion is really not useful. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS, you will fail.
His class differs from the curriculum to the point that the tutors at the statistics learning center were unable to help me with a lot of homework problems. He assumes his students have a far greater understanding of statistics than we do. On the second midterm the average was a 46% with a high of 74% and he was surprised at the low grades.
teaches the class assuming you have an in-depth knowledge of the course material. comes to lecture unprepared, fumbles around during lectures, and goes on philosophical rants of statistics. doesn't follow the curriculum on the class posting. assumes he is always right even when blatantly wrong. take this course with ANY other professor
Does not teach how to do statistics. Instead taught theoretical proofs/philosophical reasoning w/ calculus and linear algebra. Openly opposses the curriculum. Exams/HW not based class material w/ many trick questions. Not available outside of class SLC could not help as the content was so different and beyond the scope of the course. No feedback.
Worst class ever. Coming from someone who got a A in calculus and ochem. I recommend taking this class if you want to learn nothing about stats as Patel overcomplicates his lectures and exams and only further confuses his students. I have learned nothing from his class and probably would have learned more from a basic high school stats class.
350 characters isn't enough to express how terrible this professor is. I can't even wait until the end of the semester to post this because I need to take out my rage. Idc how smart you think you are, or how well his lecture fits into your schedule. DO NOT take stats 371 with this professor. Writing this after exam 2 with a 46% average. Ur welcome.
He's a cool prof if you catch him outside of class, but his teaching style is kinda meh. Be prepared to do all the heavy lifting yourself, and don't even bother trying to get help during office hours. And good luck with the grading---
Will simply not recommend. Wait and take it with another prof if you can.
Great teaching and fun class
loved this professor, great class
Hard class but he teaches the concepts well. The TA was often better at explaining things in detail. It's a graduate level course, so you are going to have to work hard. He clearly loves what he's teaching and gets excited about projects and examples. Sometimes his examples in lectures don't relate to the harder concepts, but have a basis in them.
Heavy workload and ridiculous rating by same ridiculous projects .
He needs to learn a thing or two about communication. At times may come off as pedantic too. In short, he's a very junior instructor and it shows, has lots to learn.
He is a nice professor who can demand a lot from his students but that, I guess, is because he wants us to learn more. He can be more accessible to the students. The only problem that I faced was his explanation in Advanced foundation of Linear Modeling. I feel a better reading and some effort on the lectures can help the students understand it.
Excellent professor. Well-organized courses centered on applying methods to research project of your choice. Easy to follow lectures with optional problem sets (final exam a few of these q's). He reminds you to reach out if you're struggling and is very accessible. If you're motivated to learn and sharpen skills, there is no better professor.
bad teaching and communication
not understanding at all, does not care about your learning and needs, not helpful, asks more questions when you ask for help
