Professor Murthy is a very intelligent person and is a decent lecturer. However, his slides are very boring, and he expects you to understand the material as if you had his experience level. There are hardly any assignments, and the structure of the class is disorganized. The syllabus is outdated, and the TA is a very harsh grader.

At first, I was hesitant to take his class, but he's genuinely a decent professor. I will say, it wasn't easy to get an A in this class. HOWEVER, there were tons of extra credit opportunities (extra credit lectures), so don't be scared. He's pretty nice, and I learned a lot about East Asia. Hardest part was midterm but final is take home!!

He knows the material very well, and the course is structured and very well laid out. There are no surprises. The only thing I might say is that the notes are all over the place and are a little disorganized, but all the information is there. Pretty interesting stuff too.

This is not a intro class. If you are not history major, don't choose it.

Best to take another humanities course

Very knowledgeable, but slides are a little jumbled and hard to keep track of. There are only a few assignments throughout the semester, and a 94 is required for an A. Tons of reading if you actually do it, and 30% of your grade is participation essentially. Interesting class.

Slides are clear and to the point, cover information in the readings but also add more context and presented better. Attendance and participation is a big part of the grade, but most of the tests are done outside of class. Very willing to answer questions and does offer extra credit (write a paper on a lecture that he finds, connect to class).

Not too bad, knew what he was talking about

Great professor overall and very knowledgeable about his area of study. There is a lot of reading but it is college so idk what others were expecting, just say you don't like history and go.

Be prepared to spend a decent amount of time reading the required reading, but if you do, you should be prepared for his exams. His goes into particular detail talking about the intellectual thoughts during the time periods he covers, so if you are interested in that, you might be interested in taking classes with him.

He is not a good professor, class is super boring, test are tricky. Try to avoid him!

I am taking a course by him on Marxism and it is SO GREAT-He really bases the class and its insights in the texts so you have an extremely fleshed out, technical understanding of the ideas and implications-It's no summary-it goes into the nitty gritty details-Lots of intellectual growth for the students in the class-Gets you ready for grad school

He takes random attendance in lecture twice, so be sure to show up as often as you can. He's so interesting and taught me a lot, not everything necessarily about what the course material is, haha. However both he and the TA were very tough on grading, so make sure you know your stuff. The only B I've ever gotten was in his class.

If you somehow manage to retain the information he gives you in lecture, and can reference his awful and jumbled slides effectively you'll do fine. He seems to know his stuff, but he's not a great lecturer. He doesn't ever use the textbook, and gives you information in slides only. He grades solely on the exams and one paper. No homework

Class with Viren Murthy is a nightmare. His teaching style is condescending - he neglects to teach the basic knowledge needed to understand the material and jumps right into complex concepts and expects you to master them. He gives unorganized lectures that are hard to understand and grades incredibly strictly. He made learning an impossible task.

Not the greatest teacher, but he does seem to be knowledgeable. His class is fairly easy if you can sit through his long and disorganized slideshows without falling asleep.

If you're looking for an easy humanities credit this could be a class for you. Two relatively easy midterms, and only one term paper that is on a topic of choice. Would recommend going to lecture as he gives a ton of good insights.

Prof Murthy knows his material very well, and is also good at telling them. Hearing him talking make me think that I'm reading a novel. History part is crystal clear, but u need a bit of talent to understand the philosophy and religion parts. He gives fair grade and 9% chance of extra credit. By the way he knows 6 languages. Nice professor.

Amazing guy! Sure, his course did include a lot of intellectual thought, but it's nothing dense. Three exams and one final paper. No need to do the readings. Go over the terms on the study guides and understand the passages that he discusses in class. Don't think you can get away with just looking at the slides... go to class!

Horrible teaching. Prof Murthy obviously knows his stuff, but being knowledgeable in a subject doesn't necessarily translate into good teaching. The course is more philosophical than historical. After all, Prof Murthy received his BA and MA in philosophy, not history. Extremely ambiguous grading. Avoid if possible.
