I dont know how hard he had to suc k people off for people to give him 2 stars or more because this class made me want to do some nice things to myself, whole semester you will not know what actual grade you have in the class. Lectures are 99% nothing and 1% randomly about something important, his study hours are literal nothing but sit in a circle

drop the class

This class was incredibly frustrating. Assignments were confusing with unclear instructions. Canvas was a mess, everything was hard to find. Grading made no sense. I expected a broad introduction to Asian American history, but it focused entirely on the Midwest. He'd tell us to write down random words during lecture. Don't take this class.

Lectures are very disorganized and incoherent to the point where my notes would not make sense. Random "buzzwords". Rambles and rants but randomly drops important info during lectures, thus mandatory. No rubric/instructions for group proj. Cant finish this 8 page paper because his slides dont give me any information. some advice run

This professor provides NO structure and almost no relevant information. He rambles manically about stuff from 150 years ago. WHY are we paying so much to not learn anything? To get a good grade, you have to stay awake (impossible) and read those useless books. NO slideshows, outdated course, TERRIBLE tests. Please AVOID if you want to be happy.

Honestly horrible. I took this class because it's something I'm genuinely interested in. Not a single thing this man says is coherent and, unfortunately, he does not realize this. He thinks the words that come out of his mouth are significant; so much so, he will place his own random quotes on a test. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS

If I could give this guy a 0 I would. This class made me wish I wasn't Asian. Ridiculous amount of work needed for a 101 class. Useless lectures with buzzwords thrown at you that you better remember for the midterms. Told us a week before the final there would be a "written component" which was actually a 5-8 page essay.

Don't, just don't. Save yourself from the headache that is Victor Jew's class.

Slides are not helpful and his lecturing has useless yapping. He tells you to right down random stuff and gives readings that don't help. His tests are about a lot of random stuff that doesn't relate to what he says is important. He says the final exam has a written part, then tells you a week before that its actually a 5-8 page essay.

Assuming most people who took this class were like me and unfortunate enough to be confused first-semester freshmen who didn't check the ratemy. his tests were multiple choice but stupid hard, I literally did better in calculus than this class. would never take him again and I feel kinda bad that this turned me away from the whole asianam dept.

This dude is terrible. His lectures are bad, notes are bad, tests are TERRIBLE, and he seems to not care at all about how well his students do in the class. Literally the worst class I have taken at any level of education. Don't take even if it fulfills your last requirement to get a degree.

Unhelpful lecture slides and lectures are very dense. He goes off on many tangents and tells you to write down random phrases that he repeats over and over. He is not approachable and does not seem to care for his students despite expressing our struggles. Do not take this class if you are seeking a fun one.

Don't. Just don't. No matter how much you find the topic interesting. It's not worth it. Find other ethnic study classes please. He repeats himself in lectures a lot which bothers me. Easy material but stupidly detailed and difficult exams, testing us on useless things that has nothing to do with the theme of the class or the topic we're learning.

Bad professor. He "teaches" this class different than any other university because he wants it to be his own way of teaching, so any information you find online will not help what is being said in lectures. He does not post slides or videos on canvas, and whatever he says in class is whats on the exam. Exams are horrible, does not curve class.

Yikes. At the very minimum, Prof Jew is passionate and knowledgeable about subject matter. Tests were useless and focused mostly on out-of-class readings and random things he said in lecture. Class was incredibly disorganized, which was the worst part for me. Goes on rants for sure. Would not recommend unless absolutely necessary.

Passionate about what he teaches but very disorganized. Doesn't use slides during his lectures and occasionally starts ranting rather than teaching. He decides last minute about an assignment's content, deadline, etc. Some exams mostly cover assigned readings, others mostly what he spoke during lecture. Always participate & read the assigned books.

Easily the worst class I took at UW-Madison. Multiple choice exams were 50% of the grade and felt impossible to study reasonably for. If you don't go to class good luck learning the stuff you missed; he puts stuff on the exam that he only says verbally in class. Unnecessarily difficult to get a good grade in considering its a 101 level class.

Professor Jew is very passionate and knowledgeable about the course. It was very lecture and reading heavy. There were a lot of assignments that were not graded. The tests are doable if you pay attention in class and do the readings. The paper with the final was absurd. It's a lot of a work for ethnic studies so pick a another class for credit.

His pass times are tangents, mocking faculty, and mocking students. He is passionate about the material I'll give him that. If you get him, you'll do better on the tests if you do the reading rather than pay attention in class. The paper in addition to the final is crazy. He has no tech knowledge and rarely if never answers emails.

Run. Useless information in class. The final assignment is 6-9 pages of paper single-spaced and the thesis is given out one week before the final.

He's so bad, don't take a class with him.

I would recommend Prof Jew. This class was boring and most of the lectures felt pointless, especially because there didn't seem to be any organization or logical flow and was mostly Prof Jew screaming random things and going off on random tangents and give me a headache because of his screaming and the way that he plays videos way too loud.

The professor was very unorganized and incoherent. The readings were plentiful , which very few were needed for the assignments. Very loud and lots of ranting that don't relate to the course, that was not interesting and not needed.

Professor Jew is very passionate and very loud. Lectures are slightly disorganized but understandable. Class is graded primarily on three mini papers and the take-home final, all of which require you to reference readings and lecture material (on Canvas). The readings are manageable, though they are not evenly distributed throughout the course.

This class doesn't teach you anything you already haven't learned outside of class, he repeats the same words over time , all he does is watch youtube videos and he doesn't answer any questions. Avoid him.

Horrible , the absolute WORST of the WORST professors I had in my entire time at college. He is a lame , sassy , rude , yelling nobody that his lectures aren't even worth going to. DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT this class no matter the cost. You will REGRET it if you do so don't take it.

Non-existent communication. Lectures were incredibly boring imo, not helped by the fact that he lectures with the quintessential dreary professor tone. All we did in ASNAM 240 (Food Studies) was watch YouTube videos created by random people. Only graded on three essays, hardly given grading requirements, and your paper better be amazing. Hard pass.

Some might not prefer his lecture style, but I do and I enjoy it a lot. I learned so much about Asian American history. He is very knowledgeable and very passionate about Asian American history. Attending his lectures is like listening to different stories, just remember to take notes in lectures and do the readings and you will be fine!

If you're just taking the class for an ethnic studies requirement, find a different class to take. The readings are a lot but they'll make more sense after lecture. His lectures are not power-point oriented so if you want a class that has power-point slides, find a different class. Take only if you're interested in learning about Asian Americans.

AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COST! His class is very disorganize and he assigns a A LOAD OF READINGS. If you're taking this class for the ethnic study than go find something else or you'll regret it.

Victor Jew isn't a great professor. His lectures are dry and don't relate to the required readings and when you look back at your notes they aren't helpful for study. His grading isn't clear and he doesn't put anything in learn@uw, so you don't know your grade until its too late. Take something else.

Although Professor Victor Jew appears to be passionate about his teaching, he is the worst professor I've ever taken. He assigns ridiculous amounts of reading, and a 15 page paper while hardly explaining any of it, leading to stress and despair. His lectures lack substance, are incoherent, and are practically mandatory due to his worksheets.

I just don't think the structure of this class benefits anyone. The worksheets are useless-- none of them are substantial questions that relate to our lecture. In this class now, I feel like I don't get much out of it. The readings are interesting, but it doesn't contribute to the learning in class nor discussion.

Not an easy A. You have to do the readings and pay attention, which at times is difficult. The first exam was challenging but the others weren't too bad. I didn't like not receiving my 12 page paper back before the exam. Hard to tell where you are grade-wise because of that. Victor's a nice guy but he can rub people the wrong way with his lectures

In the entire semester we only received two grades back from him (both midterm grades) but we never received a grade back for our final, a 15-page paper, or for any of the numerous in-class activities we had to do. In addition, we never got a key to check our answers so you don't know what you got wrong on any exam. Definitely do not recommend.

Professor Jew is very passionate, almost too passionate about the subject. He alternates between yelling and barely audible speech to illustrate key points during lecture. He assigns a lot of reading, but doesn't mention those readings or their importance. Do not take if only fulfilling an ethnic studies requirement.

Introductory course? Not a chance. I took this class as an easy social science credit for my final semester and boy do I regret my decision. This class is a survey course with a huge variety of material and the professor expects you to know every detail. Way too much reading. I'd suggest to stay far away from this class, especially Victor Jew!!

He assigns a 12 page paper and has two tests that he doesn't really clearly say what is on them beforehand. He assigns way too many readings. He shouts and repeats things a lot during lecture. The class I most regret taking this semester. Not a best choice to simply fill the ethnic studies requirements.

If you were like me, you saw this class as an easy way to get the ethnic studies class out of the way... SO NOT TRUE. His lectures are ridiculous. Most of them consist of him screaming at the class for no reason. His tests are incredibly specific, so you must attend all the lectures and read the material extremely closely. Boring material as well.

The worst professor I have had in my first 3 years of school. Yells during every lecture and goes on ridiculous tangents about things that don't matter. He took forever to grade our assignments and then never even showed us what we got. Do NOT take this class.

Way too much work for an intro class. His lectures had little to do with the readings he assigned and his lectures were very hard to follow. Exams are okay but you don't know if he is going to use the readings or lecture on the exam. You write a 10 page paper with a prompt that is not clear. Do not take this class if he is teaching it.

This class was way too much work for a 3 credit class. I took it for an ethnic studies and would not recommend it. There is a ton of reading g. He doesn't go over reading in lecture so you have to figure it out. His lectures seem to have little structure and I never knew what was important. Final paper is 15 pages, but exams aren't bad.

I really liked the professor as a person, but he was really unclear about things. Being a freshmen taking the class, I thought I was stupid for not understanding all the metaphors he was throwing out but seems like I wasn't the only one. The class wasn't hard though. His lack of clearness just made it tough.A lot of unnecessary reading too I think.

Very vague in his lectures. A lot of reading expected. Paper with unclear prompt. Doesn't return grades.

The professor tried so hard to be "cool" by excessive usage of obscure terms. He loved shouting. Beside, he's easily pissed off if you go to his office hour and search for help.

DO NOT TAKE VJEW OR ASIAN AM 101. Terrible professor. Tries to act young and cool. He tends to yell during lecture which will be the only thing to keep you awake. Lectures are all over the place and don't relate to the HOURS of reading each week. Random 12-15 page paper that doesn't have a clear prompt. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE.

This guy is totally useless at teaching. Uses document projections with one quote on each that you have to download individually. Lots of reading, random 12 page paper with no guidance. Worst professor I've had in my 4 years here.

TONS of reading expected. Almost an entire textbook, plus 3 novel-length books during the semester. Uses tons of confusing metaphors, and its very difficult to figure out what he expects you to know for exams. Paper was 12 pgs with no clear prompt to guide you. No grading scale so you won't have a clue what your grade is til the end of the semester

Class was way too much work for a 101 course. He was vicious and swore a lot. I didn't learn from him, and the class didn't teach me much. Didn't explain the grading scale or give feedback, so we had no idea of our performance. Avoid him, useless.

Practically shouts during lectures and often goes on tangents or uses strange metaphors. Tries to hard to be "cool". Assigns TONS of readings for class, unhelpful assignments, and expected a 12 page paper to be written in 2 weeks. Ridiculous!

The lectures were not very interesting, but he talks so incredibly loud you cant fall asleep. Many concepts are very abstract and lectures tend to trail off into other topics. The final paper is extremely important and even though I spent hours on it and discussed with him outside of class, I didnt do well. No feedback was ever given on why..

His lectures are kind of all over the place and filled with such bizarre use of metaphors that I wonder if he enjoyed some psychadelic substances a bit too much in the 70's. Although enthusiastic, lectures can drag. As long as you keep up with the readings (which can be a lot) and take decent notes during lecture, it shouldn't be tough to get an A.

He was certainly a clear speaker with his lectures well organized. Gave us the opportunity to explore primary source material and write papers using them. In my experience, not very approachable but I've seen other people do it. I'd recommend him if trying to get your ethnic studies credit in Asian American Studies. Mostly used articles, not txtbk
