10 mathematical proofs each with 3 sub questions per week, ARE YOU JOKING?

Avoid him at all costs

Super relaxed atmosphere. Good, clear presentation of material. Very accessible for questions both during lecture and office hours. Nothing was mandatory; everyone received an "A" to my knowledge. It was clear they enjoyed teaching Model Theory

[Summer 2023] A lot of unforgiving homework (18 problems a week) which are only graded (and given feedback) on a few random questions. Prof wasn't that accessible over the term. Otherwise the lectures are informative.

I took Professor Andrews for Math 521 over the summer term. Prof Andrews was extremely inaccessible, and he never once would respond to an email, comment, or piazza post I made. His homework load was unbearable, especially during the shortened summer term, and I lost a large part of my summer due to that, although I did like his lectures.

Andrews is a great professor! He explained things very well in lecture (which are necessary to get a good grade), and followed the book so if you missed a class you could stay on track. There was a significant amount of homework (We used Dummit and Foote), but if you plan ahead, you should be fine. The tests were reasonable and fair.

[MATH 541] Prof Andrews really understands the course content and often entertains his class. However, his homework are on the tough side (10+ proof-based problems per week) with no exam reviews given. Fortunately, in a stark contrast, exams are easier. Self-completion of the homework (no outside assistance) can pretty much guarantee an A on exams.

I received a 0/10 on one of my final exam written work problems with no comments or reason for 0/10. This is INSANE that I do not get any form of feedback especially when the written work is worth so much of our overall grade. I am rather disappointed with the communication between TA and student throughout this year, Be better @UW Madison Math

He seems like an okay person I just really did not vibe with his lecture style. When I would meet with him after tests to discuss them he wouldn't give good feedback whatsoever.

no. big no. stay away. bad. he's a nice person, but his lecturing style didn't work. he admitted this, but he rambles a lot and goes on looong tangents which is frustrating and makes it difficult to stay focused. lectures are pretty pointless- plan on learning most of the stuff on your own.

Great Professor. Funny and caring. He knows how to intersperse heavy calculus lectures with some interesting cultural/historical or personal anecdotes. Love his T-shirts!

Great Rants everyday to help cut the monotony, great guy, hard course but that wasnt his fault

He rambles on about random things and talks about very difficult content he knows we don't need for the class almost simply to confuse his students. Thankfully, I had a great TA who could breakdown his unorganized lectures and tell us info that Prof. Andrews forgot. He also doesn't know how to quiet down a class so it's always really loud.

Uri is the not the professor you want to have for a challenging course like Math 222. He wont respond to any email you send, and probably wont even bother to read them. When I ask him about tests, he answers as if he didnt know whats on the test and he didnt even write them. Get ready to teach yourself the whole course at home.

Uri genuinely cares about his student's understanding of the material. His lectures are completely planned out ahead of time and he makes it very easy to take good notes that help you do each problem on the homework step by step. His rants gave a nice break each class, so I never felt like I was doing the math for a straight hour and a half.

Although the class as a whole is challenging, Uri did his best to prepare the class for the exams and overall success in the course. I had power lecture with him, and although it got dry at times, he tried to make it bearable with his "funny" dad jokes. Overall a very good professor. The only downside is he sometimes gets lost in confusing rants.

Friendly, funny, and makes math interesting. Love his angry stories about how math teachers lied to him.

He was the worst professors I've had at this university. He seemed irritated to be teaching a low level class, so he taught it as if it were an upper level course. His lectures rambled on and on, and would wait until the end of lecture where everyone was already confused to give information you'd need for homework/super hard exams. Get a tutor.

Great guy, really hard class. I found his lectures very confusing and difficult to follow. It didn't help my TA spoke very broken English and when I would ask a question I found myself even more confused than before I had asked. I ended up failing the class and am taking it at a community college over the summer.

Great funny guy who cares about math but I wouldn't recommend him for calculus 221. The structure was so bad that unless we calculated we didn't know our grades. The class had to be curved so much because the scores were so low on a basic calculus class which should say something about how hard the exams were.

Go to class to see his t-shirts. Stay in class for an entertaining lecture about Model Theory. He has many corny jokes, but even more energy and enthusiasm for teaching logic.

First off, Uri is awesome, both as a lecturer and as himself. The course pretty much followed the textbook, but his insights (and hilarious jokes and t-shirts) made going to lecture very worth it. If you are interested in set theory/logic, Uri is the best professor for a solid undergraduate introduction.

I ended up getting confused a lot by his lectures, and thought that the tests were very hard. As someone who didn't take calc in high school, this class was very difficult for me and I ended up getting lost and didn't do very well in this course.

A pleasure to see the legend's awesome tshirts every day. Seriously, those shirts were the reason I came to lecture. This class was easier for me since I had calc knowledge but I could see how his tangents would annoy people with no background. My English-speaking TA was removed halfway through semester for one with broken English. I did better...

Good prof for a bad class. So much trig.

Uri was the best prof. I had this year!

Overall good instructor. The final was hard.

Uri was great. I wish we could have him for 217 too.

I had Uri for 171. He gave us a great foundation, which came in real handy now that I'm taking 217.

I really enjoyed Uri overall. He does tend to go off on many tangents but he knows what he's talking about. Don't bother going to his office hours, he barely gives you the time of day. Go to your TA or the many math labs around campus. Overall class was pretty easy and he listened to the problems students were having during lecture.

The class was tough, but Uri was great. The book doesn't have enough examples, so sometimes it felt like homework problems came out of the blue. But Uri told us clearly what would be on exams.

Uri is the type of person that would be fun to hangout with. His lectures have a lot of dry humor mixed in and he wears awesome shirts. That being said he is very theoretical and sometimes you don't know how to solve problems. Should have a third midterm because the final was very difficult and confusing.

I had background in pre-calculus and Calculus so the course was pretty easy overall but I think if you don't have any background he may be a little difficult to follow. He moves through material quickly and relies on proofs to create understanding. He will also use the easiest example in class and then have harder homework problems.

Lectures cover the theory of why certain functions work the way they do... not how to use them. If you have a background in calculus this should be an easy A. If you don't, pray that you have an amazing TA. One nice thing is that he tells you what types of questions will be on the exams so studying isn't too stressful.

Uri was a great professor. His lectures were funny and covered everything you need to know. He lets you know what is on the exams so you know what to study. His final is very difficult. Study for it.

Very interesting human. He loves what he is teaching and is passionate about math. Very helpful and is clear on what he will put on his exams. This class did not involve proofs to be clear. He might go over them so you understand formulas or theorems, but not for you to memorize. The final is a lot tougher than you'd think.

The tests are hard, if you haven't gotten that much from other ratings already. However, Uri has been my favorite professor so far. He gave a genuine crap about what he taught and his lectures were totally entertaining. I learned a lot of math as well. If I have the opportunity to take another one of his classes I will.

Uri is great for the first part of the semester. That saying many people who come into this class have learned that information before. Once you get into real calculus and things you have never learned before it becomes almost impossible. The final exam was the hardest and worst exam I have ever taken in my entire life. My Ta was also awful.

The lectures were fun. The final was really hard, but the curve made it all OK.

Classes can be confusing to understand. Often times having to get help out of class. Tests are extremely hard. Final requires lots of studying and there was even material on the final that was never taught in class

Uri Andrews taught me how to take the limit of my grade as it approaches zero. Thank you.

loves theory and you never have to know it for the test. sometimes gives overview of midterms which helps a lot. he is sassy when answering questions.

Uri is good at lecturing. He made my least favorite subject more fun.

Uri is a theory guy at heart so he unfortunately brings this approach to Math 171 where it doesn't belong. This makes some relatively simple concepts become confusing, long, and boring. Besides that though, his exams are straight-forward and he's an all-around engaging and funny professor.

Uri's lectures are great, and he told us what was on the exams. So, can't complain.

Uri is such a great professor! Really engages you into the lecture and just super funny and bubbly. I really wished he would continue the 2nd half of the math course (Math 217). Can't deny a professor that rides a unicycle!

This guy is unbelievably funny. Seems really at home in the lecture hall, although a little awkward in one-on-one conversations. He's a little unclear though because he writes really fast, and it can be hard to keep up while note taking. Told us what to expect on the midterms and that was exactly what there was.

Uri's the most unintentionally hilarious professor.

He told us pretty clearly what would be on the exams. Study what you know will be there.

Uri is a great guy and all. Hes funny and keeps you engaged, but when it comes to teaching, he's no good. His millions of tangents get you no where and when it comes to content, he can't teach it very well. Make sure you get a tutor!

Take the class with Uri.

Uri is awesome. Definitely take his class

Funny. Wears cooL shirts. Goes off on tangents. Keeps you engaged. Currently wearing a shirt with two kittens in between a hamburger bun. My personal favorite shirt of his has a Llama sipping tea and saying "indeed".

I love Uri

He's a great lecturer and is very funny. He tends to go on tangents about math but it's quite funny.

Great professor

Extremely clear during lectures. Proofs very easy to follow. However watch out for the homework and tests, they're very hard.

He is a very talented lecturer.

Uri's teaching style is very clear, but his exam is extremely difficult. try to avoid this professor or just made an audition.

Uri does a fabulous job of explaining and teaching math concepts to mathematicians. Unfortunately, he tries this approach with engineers and other folks who don't have the same mindset. Notice for which classes he gets good reviews, and for which he does not. As for his teaching 542, he's clearly a logician, but still does a good job.

Very helpful in office hour. Although the course is not easy, he simplifies the content and makes the course very interesting. Just take it if you want to choose a proof based course.

Ba ba ba ba ba BOSSSS. Highly recommend for any upper level math course.

highly recommended..tries to reduce formalism to the absolute minimum but does not make things more simple than they actually are. explains things so they make sense intuitively... perfect prof for a proof based course

Uri Andrews is amazing: his lectures are engaging, and he is incredibly clear and methodical in his proofs. On that note, yes, the assignments and exams are proofs, but unlike what many of the low-raters have said, you only need to become comfortable with the material to be able to do well. He is incredibly helpful in office hours as well.

Professor Andrews is fantastic. He is very clear in proofs, and his classes are anything but dry. I would highly recommend him for any upper level math classes. If you are looking for a lower level math class (below 340), suck at math and want to avoid learning anything, then yes. You won't like Professor Andrews.

If you take Andrews for this class, hope you have a good TA. Lectures are proof-intensive, as are tests. The material is difficult to understand straight from him, and test material is unpredictable. He does a very good job of making a simple subject far more complicated than it really is. Avoid him. Three times more likely to get an F than an A.

Andrews was a good prof for 521. Lectures were very clear and he was helpful and respectful in office hours. He gave a ton of homework, but exams were fair and grading was reasonable. As mentioned by others, he doesn't like to give any information about the curve or how grades will be assigned.

The class is hard, but Andrews is pretty helpful. Lectures are fairly clear, especially if you read the book before the lecture. He's always very willing to further explain things if you ask him, both in and out of class. His grading is dodgy though - there's no explicit grading system.

Most of the comments here do a good job of summing up Professor Uri Andrews. He places extreme emphasis on proofs in his lectures and exams, does not provide anything in terms of study guides or sample exams, and is stingy on the grading curve. If you are unable to write out proofs by memory for exams, you will not do well in his class.

Uri Andrews is an all-around poor excuse for a professor. He seems like a nice guy, but his tests are extremely difficult in that they are all proofs (that aren't easy to understand), and there is a horrible curve for the exams as well. If you were hovering around the average for an exam, expect a low C. Avoid taking his class at all costs.

DO NOTT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! Worse teacher I've ever had. I got an A in all 3 college math courses I took before this one, but got a D in this!! His tests are almost all proofs which make them impossible. You learn twice as much by skimming the book than you do in lecture.

The worst professor I have had on this campus so far. Tests are all over the place and he seems to have no grip on how to make an exam. Does not give any clue about how the grades are distributed and ends up being a terrible curve. Avoid him if you can.

Aside from the poor teaching qualities of this professor, he was disrespectful in his email response regarding grades. He was one of the very few professors who does not care about students.

Probably the least intelligent professor I've had on this campus. TA was 500 times the teacher Uri will ever be. Not helpful in office hours. Curve is a little ridiculous but not outrageous. Exams seem to be more a test of "did you memorize this theorem or proof" than "did you actually understand the material?". Worst professor I've had thus far.

If Uri says that everything on the homework is possible exam material, please remember that he's not kidding. If you do (and understand) the homework, you'll do fine. His lectures are very proof based, and will seem all over the place at first, but he did a great job of tying everything together in the end.

He is actually a great professor. The beginning of the class was rough because he was trying to teach us a bunch of completely new things quickly, but he connected it all really well in the end. If you appreciate the theories behind the calculations, you are going to LOVE this man. If you just want to learn computations, take 319.

People sadly undervalue him. From what i have seen so far a very fair and accommodating professor. The midterms have a strong emphasis on proofs but he sends(could have been TA) review sheets going over many of them that can appear on test. I personally did not go to lecture often but the few times he always went over cool concepts like math logic

He's a good professor, and seems to be a pretty cool guy in general. He said at the beginning of the class that anything on the homework was game for the exams, which was true, so all the people that are whining are probably mad because they got bad grades.

Not nearly as bad as some other math professors. He speaks good English, covers material fairly thoroughly. Because he never taught the course before, hard to know what to expect on exams, but I'd recommend him over a lot of other teachers.

Hands down, the WORST professor I have ever had. His lectures were unhelpful, and he was extremely condescending towards students. The averages on his exams were never above 40%. For the final, he told us to study things that were completely unrelated to what was actually on the exam. Avoid at all costs.

I don't know why his rating are so low, but Andrews is a lot better than what these reviews are saying. At least for Math 320, the tests are very reasonable and his lectures are more interesting than the norm. If you are taking 320, he's a good professor to have.

Not a good Prof. He does so many proofs and theories that when it comes to homework, all we know are proofs and theories. He doesn't do many examples and has the MOST ridiculous exams. All the main topics and things focused on during the course goes out the door during exams b/c he loves concentrating on things we barely go over. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!

Uri is HORRIBLE. HIs lectures are useless and confusing, and he doesn't finish example problems which leaves students feeling frustrated. He doesn't make TAs post grades, so you have no idea where you actually stand in the class. Even straight A students get Ds in his courses. AVOID HIM.

do not take this professor! he makes no sense. he seems like a quirky guy, but no. He assigns okay homework, but is not helpful whatsoever. You dont realize youre failing until the final, because you arent told your grades. if you are lucky enough to get a good TA, you might have a chance. GET TUTORING if you have no choice but to take 271 from Uri

He goes off on random tangents that are completely irrelevant to the course. He makes his tests as hard as possible and does not prepare you for them sufficiently. If you have this misfortune of having this professor, I wish you luck and hope you have a positive attitude. You will need it as you fail everything.

He is a good guy and is willing to help you if you ask for it. However, the lectures are somewhat boring... just go in, write notes, and get out. Takes some time to process the new material on your own however. This is where his and his TA's office hours come in handy.

at first he may seem like a quirky fun professor but that is WAY wrong. his lectures NEVER help with the crazy homework he gives out. His exams are probably harder than calc 221 exams. avoid at all costs. take 221 instead...even if you hate math

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Unless you are forced and this is the only one available. Lectures are a joke, while the book is also confusing. Only bright spot is if you have a nice TA and that's chancing it. DO NOT TAKE

Worst professor I've ever had. Lecture's are just filled with proofs that don't help you on his mountain of homework problems he gives every week. 2 midterms and final are absolutely awful. They say to study your homework, and then none is on the test. DO NOT TAKE

Bad professor, bad class. He seems like a nice guy until you take the midterms and the final, which are extremely difficult. The homework and quizzes are NOT representative of what the tests are on.

Lecture is worthless. Doesn't answer questions if he doesn't feel like spending the time for you to actually understand the material. Tests are on topics that we barely brush over. Terrible professor. Rambles on about dinosaurs and useless information.

Uri is not a good professor. His lecture material is not related to the exams at all. I would suggest staying away from this professor
