Although this may not be well-liked on here, I did not mind Dr. Winston. I thought she was always willing to help, and I truly think she wanted us to succeed. The class had moments where it was slightly confusing, but overall, this class was better than I anticipated. If you work ahead of time in this class, you will be more than fine!
Lectures usually unhelpful. Was more confused when I paid attention in class than when I did not. Lots of busy work and always had something due. LOTS of readings and things to know, but as long as you have a general idea of them you will be fine. Exams fairly straightforward as long as you prepare. Class was definitely harder than it needed to be.
she is very dry and relies heavily on the textbook but I've had worse classes before.
Very textbook heavy, but I think she started catching on that people weren't coming to lecture or paying attention because the tests started to ask more questions about studies covered in class. Had an exam after election day, which she seemed not to care about or have sympathy about.
Psych 456 was a great class content-wise. But... I honestly got more enjoyment from reading the textbook than I got from going to class- Professor Winston's lectures were absolutely unbearable. She does not know how to teach and does not prepare students for exams. Take Psych 456, but not with Tina Winston.
While I loved the textbook and the actual material - Professor Winston was very tough and the reviews are not necessarily wrong. She is witty and tried to incorporate humor, but she does come off passive aggressive, refuses to give study guides, and her exam questions are very difficult and niche. Take this class, but not with this professor.
This professor is a good professor. She has a teaching style that is heavy on you needing to learn before coming to class, but she is a genuine person and her grading is super decent! If you participate in class and are a good student, the class is easy! I would certainly recommend as a 601!
She DOES NOT care about students. I had a serious family emergency and she would not budge on due dates to give me extensions. She basically waved a hand and said "too bad". Made a big assignment due the Wed. and Sat over Thanksgiving. The class itself was not terrible, but good luck if you have an emergency come up. Very passive agressive.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF IT'S WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!! I don't know how she managed to make social psychology boring but she did- very disappointing b/c I was super interested in it before this class. Reading the textbook was genuinely much more interesting than attending lectures. Niche tests, brutally unfair questions. Super passive aggressive.
I just want to put her in my pocket! I think all the other ratings are excessive. I liked Dr. Winston, she obviously knows what she is talking about. She does have an interesting presentation of lecture material, but after a week or two you'll figure it out as it is consistent and easy. It's a great class too, don't be afraid, you can do it!!!
She cares more about her self-made rules than she does about her students. Her lecturing style is awful and she is difficult for no reason other than stubbornness and ego. She won't post slides and is very particular about email etiquette and late credit. Do NOT take a class with this professor unless you absolutely have to.
Tina Winston may be the worst professor I have ever come across. Her lectures are literally case study after case study, and the exams are even worse. Her wording is extremely confusing and she makes no effort to clarify. She also doesn't gaf about her students, so don't expect any sympathy from her. Never ever taking a class with her ever again.
This is one of the worst psych classes I have taken. The lectures are not helpful at all, they are super rushed and usually if you have a question during lecture...it wont get answered. You basically teach yourself all the material from the textbook. Her announcements are also super passive-aggressive and she just does not like teaching this class.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH THIS PROFESSOR. This was by far the worst class I have ever taken in my entire academic career. I never went to lectures because the entire time she rushed through specific studies and experiments. If you have to take 456 with her (which I'd EXTREMELY discourage you from doing), take LOTS of notes from the text.
Professor Winston's class is challenging, but engaging. The workload is heavy, but she's responsive and cares about student success. Attend lectures, use the free textbook, and try study tools like Unstuck study - they really help with prep. Not an easy A, but the effort is worthwhile.
took psych 456 and I was looking forward to it because a friend of mine took it the year prior and loved the class getting a full A, this time around I was not so lucky because she does nothing but read off slides barely discusses what in the textbook so exams are 90% experiments 10% actual material, she has made me dislike social psychology
Lectures are very chaotic and boring. All of the notes in class are about niche psychology studies. The lectures are not recorded and the slides are not posted at all, but she goes through everything so quickly it is almost impossible to take notes at the same pace. Overall just do not take this class if you value your time and sanity.
She is a nice person but is passive aggressive. Her lectures are confusing and her slides are so shortcutted that you cannot learn anything. This class covers so many studies and research papers that you can't keep them straight. She's a nice person but I wouldn't recommend taking this class unless you like to read studies and research papers 24/7.
Do not take this class. There are not many homework assignments but they are suuuuuper long and tedious and worth barely any points that it doesn't feel worth it to even do them. Lecture is just talking about studies the whole time without discussing anything from the textbook. Tests ask niche questions. :/.
Oh god, avoid taking a class with Winston. I have never experienced a professor like this in all of my 4 years. Her slides are extremely boring/lack information and have a lot to do with boring case studies.
Her lectures are unbearable and pretty much useless. The terrible organization of information, along with confusing assignments and readings, made this by far the worst class I have ever taken. I'm not sure how she still has a job.
Literally awful, take this class with any other professor. Nobody attended lectures because they were so boring and irrelevant. Papers or other big assignments are due EVERY week. Exams were a waste of time, half of them were grammar questions. Grading criteria is confusing and long. I don't feel like I learned anything. She's also kind of rude!
Never take a class with Tina Winston. I am still thinking about her a semester after being in her class. Lecture was entirely unhelpful for learning course content and exams were overly specific. She sets her students up for failure and is unwilling to answer questions.
Take this with a different professor as the other classes don't have exams. This class is by far the most challenging I've ever taken. All assignments were extremely time-consuming. Lectures did not always feel helpful. I don't feel as though I've learned a lot after finishing this class. Be prepared to spend most of your time on this class.
Had her online and everything was listed and straight forward. Not the easiest, and there are busy work it feels like. She does respond to emails.
I really do not feel I have learned anything significant in her class. She read off her slides and they were difficult to follow. I also approached her about an extension for a family situation and she acted like it was all my fault and like I was inconveniencing my classmates and her. Just avoid her
Do not take a class with her if you can avoid it. Before this class I was confident in my abilities in psychology statistics but coming out of it I feel dumb. She does not explain anything well and the lectures are confusing and completely unstructured. Her class has three exams and like 5 papers while other classes had just three papers.
Professor Winston is not a great teacher. She's clearly smart, but she read word for word off her slides and didn't seem passionate about the subject at all. If you can take another professor's class for social psych, do it.
Professor Winston was the most disorganized professor I've had in college. When I saw the study guide for the first midterm I was so lost because we didn't learn about most of it. We spent so much time on research papers that we didn't learn anything else. Her syllabus was also a mess, I had to make my own syllabus doc because hers made no sense
Professor Winston was very disorganized and inaccessible. I tried going to her lectures but I would leave just as lost as I walked in. There were many times that assignment descriptions would say something is not graded while the syllabus said it was. She does respond to emails quickly but her responses were very passive aggressive.
I wish I am dead so I do not have to take her class again.
She is not helpful if you are falling behind. I mean this is an mandatory class for psych major so please show some tolerance if your students are falling behind. There are papers due almost every week and three exams. I wish I am dead so I do not have to continue this course.
Clearly intelligent and respected in her field but it goes to her head. Please LISTEN to the reviews and don't take her class. Was ignorant to my accommodations and showed no empathy which is absolutely unacceptable as a PSYCH professor... Responds to emails fast and this class will truly prepare you for research, but I still don't recommend.
Tina is unforgettable. She truly has a gift of making students hate their life and feel as if they do not belong in this university because they are stupid. She writes her own rate my professor reviews which make her out to be such a nice caring person which is not the case at all. As a psych professor, she should b more aware of mental health.
Tina is by far the worst Professor I have had. I do not ever leave reviews for professors because I understand that teaching is not easy and I like to give my professors the benefit of the doubt. Tina is not good at accommodating for students, she does not care what life circumstances you are going trough, she expects you to put her class first.
Dr. Winston has a distinct teaching style that definitely takes some time to get used to. That said, she is very clear on expectations for papers + exams. Can come off as dismissive/snarky at times, but is friendly and more than qualified to teach about writing research papers. She clearly cares about her students and is usually accessible for Q's.
This class COULD be a moderately easy class, but it is not. It is obvious that Tina is a very intelligent person, but she is not a good lecturer. Lectures are very confusing and a bit disjointed. There is a huge course pack you need to buy, and all the papers in it seem out of order. Two words this class brings to mind: JUMBLED and DISORDERED!
As an online class I understand that there was a lot of material to cover in a short amount of time but this professor had no regard for peoples time outside of the class. The article and discussion post assignment were extremely time consuming and you would only receive a few points for that one assignment. Unfair for only a 3 credit class.
Professor Winston is an incredible professor. Cares about her students so much and truly puts so much effort into the course. There is nobody better to learn this information from, she knows it extremely well and puts so much time into answering questions/providing help. Class is difficult but you get what you put into it! I hope I have her again.
Course grade is based on 3 papers, 3 exams, and 2 presentations. Work is not easy but prof responds to emails almost instantly at pretty much all hours and cares about students. Tests are fair. Make sure to revise papers, start early, and ask questions if you have them. Textbook is optional. Attendance not required but go if you want to do well.
I genuinely do believe she cares about her students, she responds very quickly to emails. HOWEVER, I have taken extremely difficult courses at UW and this is by far my least favorite and most difficult class. 3 papers, 3 exams, 2 presentations for one class. It is a ridiculous amount of work, extremely time-consuming, and very difficult.
Spring 2021-2022 Very difficult class but a lot of the readings she assigns are valuable and important within psychology. The papers are very useful for preparing you to write research papers. I would not take this class again because it was incredibly stressful. Overall, its a useful class but make sure you have time for it.
Very difficult, but very fair. Exams are easier than expected, but papers are graded somewhat harshly from TAs. Lots of busy work. Spend your time revising papers and use posted study guides to review for exams, and you should be fine. Very boring lectures.
Worst professor that I have ever had. Lectures in this class are exceptionally boring and somehow less informative than if you were to attempt learning through osmosis. Every aspect of this class manages to be both uninformative and overcomplicated. It is unclear what is expected of students, and direct questions are often completely disregarded.
By far the worst prof ive had in 3 years. Her lectures are boring, and she just recaps the readings. Each week there are usually 3 readings, a prelab activity, and a large writing assignment for the lab. It's an insane amount of work on an extremely uninteresting class. Avoid at all costs, she gives out less good grades than other professors
Professor Winston doesnt realize how much work her students put in and isnt willing to meet you in the middle when youre confused about something. The exams are only 40 questions, which are super specific and pertain to the smallest of details from studies, and somehow count for 50% of your grade. There are no quizzes or questions examples prior
Tina Winston was an alright professor. She's very knowledgeable about the material, but her slides and lectures didn't seem very organized. She provided a lot of helpful information for the tests and papers. This is a tough course so be prepared to manage your time.
She is sassy but brilliant
Prof Winston's class is hard but she's a good prof. She does care a lot about her students, despite what people may say. Papers are lots of work and most of the class work happens in the first half of the semester, but work hard and you'll do well. She's really clear about what she wants, especially for papers. Follow instructions and you'll pass.
Winston has a really bad rep and I was hesitant to take a class with her but she was so helpful and clearly has a lot of knowledge to pass on. She may be snarky but she cares about her students and people that have left her bad reviews probably just didn't show up to class when it is really important that you do. Don't let her rep scare you.
Winston is a tough professor and she'll make you work hard, but she's not that bad. Quizzes are difficult and the papers have lots of requirements, but if you pay attention you'll be alright. Definitely have to put in the hours, but instructors leave lots of good feedback.
Do not touch this class with a 30 foot pole. Professor Winston's pre-recorded "lectures" are long and awful. She talks at 2 words per minute. She does not have office hours. Want to email her? She will respond within the minute, and 9 times out of 10 will tell you she is too busy to respond. By far, the worst professor I have ever met. Avoid!!
Do not take this class with this professor. She does not care about her students at all, and was very unaccommodating. She would not extend deadlines for me by more than a few days even though I had had major surgery. Quizzes are unnecessarily difficult and ask about the smallest details and workload is unnecessarily heavy.
Although this was a very difficult class, I loved Prof. Winston! She was very approachable and responded to emails immediately. There's a LOT of work outside of class and lab, so be prepared to put in the hours. Not impossible to get an A, but definitely be prepared for the amount of work and studying needed.
Tina Winston seems to not care about her students at all. She makes the class unbelievably hard and barely gives any helpful direction for papers and quizzes. Lectures are just PPs. She is bad at responding and does not have office hours, except for a Chat on canvas. I do not recommend ever taking Psych 225 with her, as you will be very frustrated.
PSA Tina Winston writes her own positive reviews on rate my professor. Be warned if you read a positive review on here she wrote it herself and it's not true. I know this class is mandatory, but literally, you would rather switch majors than have her. Worst professor ever !!
Tina is one of the worst profs I have ever had. She is painfully un-engaging and simply does not care about her students. Her "office hours" are a Chat on Canvas. She holds the work of her students to an extremely high level, but her performance as a teacher does not match up. If she were a student , she would fail her own class. AVOID!
Professor Winston's class is difficult, but anyone who tells you she doesn't care about her students doesn't know her. Professor Winston is an amazing professor, committed to helping her students learn. She helps students develop into substantially better empirical writers and thinkers, and you'll be much better off for having taken her class.
I wish I had at least one positive thing to say about Tina Winston; but alas I do not, Winston is easily the worst professor I've ever had. She stresses being clear and concise, but I've never had less clear instruction. Psych 225 is hard enough as it is, but Tina Winston will make you wish you never came to UW-Madison.
This course is utterly ridiculous as a requirement for the Psych major, especially taught by Tina Winston. She does not seem to care one bit about her students or the situation they are in. She is very disrespectful and very full of herself. The class is just a ton of work just for the sake of having students do a lot of work. If you can, avoid it.
Im not sure why people like her are professors when they dont even care about their students. I emailed her telling her that Im dealing with mental illness & struggling in the class & all she said in return was its a tough time for everyone. Not only is she rude & selfish, she also is a horrible teacher. Ive had to teach myself everything
The format of this class was terrible. 1) read the textbook. 2) click through a PowerPoint with audio clips attached. Her voice is monotonous. 3) Quiz- very difficult 4) Read article. 5) Answer a nitpicky, super-detailed, and long list of questions. 6) Group Discussion post and response. I think she's trying to make us as uninterested as she can.
She is the most terrible professor Ive ever met. No empathy and very conscience of students. Only the smartest or best students will attract her. She is a lot into the ism. Dont ever consider to take her class.
I was warned this class was difficult but it was manageable UNTIL I had burnout due to depression and serious family troublesI emailed her and she gave me a ONE day extension on my paper. She also scolded + glared at me for not knowing something that she never taught. This class made me suicidal, DO NOT TAKE IT WITH TINA IF YOU HAVE DEPRESSION.
Tina teaches a tough class. She isn't the best lecturer but you can tell she cares about her students and the material. She clearly loves what she does, but doesn't give handouts. Prepare to work your butt off in her class, you can't slack. Her lectures are boring but if you want to pass you should go. She responds quickly to email so ask for help.
Ultimately kind and has good intentions. My problem is that she is consistently stressing "economy of expression" and being as clear as you can using as little words as you can. She uses little words, but she is incredibly unclear. I felt like I was thrown into difficult assignments with little instruction. This class took years off of my life.
Lots of work for this course, but expected since it's the hardest for the psych major. Tina gets a bad rep, but she is honestly a kind lady, especially if you actually talk to her. Lectures are pretty boring because no one participates. You can definitely learn a lot if you take this class seriously and just put in the work.
Responds quickly to emails and ultimately kind. Though, very uninspiring. This class was more work than it needed to be. She made the material miserable to sit through. Teaching was so ineffective that many people just stopped going to lecture because it did not help--that is asinine. Psych teachers at UW poorly reflect what psychology has to offer
This has been the worst class I have EVER taken at UW-Madison. Tina is condescending in lectures, unhelpful when emailed for help, and materials were disorganized and confusing (she makes them herself then mandates everyone buy it) Also, EVERY TA this semester was new. The old ones all probably quit because she is such a terrible instructor. AVOID.
Tina is a great professor for Research Methods. Super passionate about the subject and responds to emails almost instantly. Tina challenges students with this class. The problem is that a lot of people are too lazy when it comes to the readings or assigned work and say it's too hard but display only minimal effort. Take it seriously to succeed.
Lots of readings, and they are CRUCIAL. Do the readings before lecture or youll be lost. Tina is confusing and sometimes vague. I learned a ton of very valuable information though. Lab is very intense too.
Tina isn't great, not as bad as some of the reviews say. Boring lectures, but she gives you the info you need for exams-no slides online. A ton of work, more than other RM profs, but she isn't THAT bad if you have a good TA. Go to lecture & lab, take notes, stay on top of the work, and you can survive. Responds fast to emails if you have a question
I dont know why she teaches research methods in Psychology when shes inconsiderate of students and people with mental illness. She made triggering comments about depression without considering the fact that some students have depression. Long, boring, confusing lectures. Picky about how you write your papers too! Id give her a 0 if I could.
Tina Winston is by far the most passionate professor I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. The class in it of itself is quite difficult, but Tina does everything she can to make sure you do well. If you let her, she will be your biggest cheerleader. She responds to emails quickly, stays late during office hours, etc. take her honors class!
Psych225 is super challenging and you have to put in a ton of work to do well. But if you have the opportunity to take it with Tina, I highly recommend you do so. She's always available to meet outside of class and responds to emails instantly. She's one of the most caring teachers I've experienced, and I wish I could take more classes with her!
She has taught this class for many years and knows what she is teaching. Tina is incredibly organized. Her course is only difficult when you don't keep up with the work. She cares a lot about her students. She gives many chances to asks questions and hosts many office hours and review sessions. She also responds to emails VERY quickly.
I was nervous going into 225 after the bad things I heard. Don't get me wrong the course is extremely challenging and a TON of work (should be 5 credits) but if you put in the effort you can get an A. Compared to other professors, Tina puts her heart and soul into this class and does anything to help her students, and shes funny too!! Love her!
Tina was a great professor! I really enjoyed her class as she tried her best to make people understand. She offered review sessions, online chats, and was always accessible by email. She was great at teaching research methods by showing examples of studies that did or did not follow those methods. Discussion was great as well.
This class was one of the worst I have taken at UW Madison. It was impossible for me to pay attention in class because she was so boring and just assumed we knew stuff coming into the lecture. If you have the option, take the class with someone else. The only positive was that the discussion sections and TAs were good.
Professor Winston is incredible! Yes, she expects a lot, and research methods is not the easiest class, but she knows what she's talking about. She puts her heart and soul into this class and makes sure students have every resource they need to succeed. Though intimidating to approach at first, she's actually quite friendly and funny.
Tina always dresses to the nine, likes to joke around, and brings snacks to lab if you are in her section. But getting real, take 225 her in the honors section. Yes she can be blunt. Yes she has high standards. However, she really cares about her students. She responds to emails within an hour. You will leave the class a better psych student.
I was afraid of Professor Winston after reading these reviews! However, I can honestly say after having her that she is a great professor. She is passionate about what she does and wants her students to succeed. This is definitely a hard class, but if you do bad thats on you (not her). Just do readings and go to lecture! She actually is nice.
Tina Winston is a terrible condescending human being who lacks the ability to feel any kind of empathy. She is only capable of taking pride in herself while experiencing the false believe that she has brought something good into this world with her academic achievements in attempts of masking her midlife crisis. All we can do is pray for her.
Everyone gripes about this class and now I know why. I can't deny that Tina is undoubtedly knowledgeable on the subject, but she cannot teach to save her life. She assumes you know everything coming into lecture and is extremely condescending if you approach her with any questions. Material is dry and the course is poorly organized. AVOID.
Awful. Don't ever take this class with her.
Tina is very rude in class and in office hours. Try not to take it with her. The material is super easy but she doesn't each you any of it. Awful professor. Needs to be organized and be clear of expectations for class.
Tina is very unorganized and rude. I was always confused in class and her exams are hard. Try to avoid taking this with her. Her arrogance is her biggest issue in becoming a better lecturer.
Don't take this class with Tina, you'll regret it. She is arrogant and very confusing lecturer. Went to her office hrs for her to tell me she was busy and could only give .s a few mins where she proceeded to assume I don't go to lecture and that's why I don't understand.
I had one of the worst class experiences in this class. Lectures honestly did not seem worth it at all and I didn't go after the first few weeks. She'd basically just read directly from the course pack or go on tangents. Lab is ultra important (that's where I actually learned), so make sure you go every week.
I had heard a lot of bad things about how tough this course was going to be, but Tina made it so much better. Take this class for honors if you can, and you'll really benefit from the detailed comments Tina gives for every paper (we only had to write 3). Go to every lecture and do the readings on time. Also go to office hours which are VERY HELPFUL
Took her honors section. She's amazing; extremely knowledgable and can be hilarious! she cares so much! but this is an incredibly difficult course and her standards are nearly impossible to reach. That said, I learned a lot in this course and made me really appreciate the discipline (psych). I recommend her, but be ready to work and learn!
Tina knows what she's talking about, but you REALLY need to attend every lecture and lab and read ALL of the assigned readings really carefully (about 15-20 assigned empirical papers to read per exam). The 3 exams are difficult because they test on the smallest details. Tina is super nice though, so attending office hours really helped.
Tina Winston, more commonly known as "Tina NoChill Winston" likes to assign at least one research paper or test for each week of the semester. Exams test your knowledge of the smallest details possible.
This class was incredibly boring and difficult. The only positives of this class are the TAs and the generous curve. Without the curve I think most students would fail this class. There is always a ton going on and Tina is very confusing and can be rude when questions are asked. I have never had a class that was as much work as this one.
She seems like she means well, but she explains things in a very confusing and roundabout way with no clear structure. Waaaay too much homework, expect lots of all-nighters for papers that they give you less than a week to write. On the plus side, the tests are a lot easier than you think they'll be. And the curve is huge.
If you do the work, you will get an A. You can even skip class (if you read thoroughly). TINA WILL GIVE YOU THE ANSWERS OF QUESTIONS ON THE TEST IN LECTURE AND IN THE Q&A SESSION. Study early and you'll get the most out of her class. She has taught me more than 90% of my other profsteachers.
Lectures are extremely dull and boring. Examslectures are based off of old readings. Tests are tough but the curve is generous. Only take if you have to, other wise not recommended.
Tina is sweet, but her class is unnecessarily hard and boring. The class is based entirely on reading old articles, and she tests your knowledge through asking obscure, detailed questions. I took the class for honors, so she was the TA, and she graded our papers significantly more harshly than the 225 papers. I wouldn't take it with her again.
I feel like I learned a lot in Tina's class. It's possible to get an A, but she makes you work for it. She has high expectations for the class and kind of makes you feel stupid if you ask a question she thinks you should know the answer to, but she'll always go over something in detail if you don't get. She can be really sweet sometimes, too.
Tina is clearly very knowledgeable and interested in what she is teaching, but she is not a very effective lecturer. Hard to stay focused the whole lecture, and asking questions always feels kind of like poking a sleeping dragon. She's lots easier to talk to one-on-one! Exams are difficult, but curve and additional section grades help a lot.
