Professor Yu is really a great professor. He will upload every lecture on canvas. The whole course is about several interesting readings about asian american. The midterm and final are both easy and fair. I have learnt a lot from the readings assigned. Highly recommend this course and this professor!

You can tell prof yu really cares about what he teaches. Lectures are pretty interesting. You definitely have to read a lot for this class and sometimes the deadlines to "read" the book are a little short. Stay on top of lecture material and do most of the reading and you should be fine. Great prof though!!!

I went into the class knowing absolutely nothing about poetry, and by the end of the course, I learned so much and had a great time. He is very passionate and knowledgable, and just downright understanding. Definitely recommend.

I took his Asian Americans and Science Fiction class, and I really enjoyed the texts he chose for this class. I definitely could've gotten away with not reading. In lectures, he explains the materials and their context well. Expectations for essays were made very clear. I would definitely recommend his class!!

This is just your typical literature class. Once a week he gives super easy canvas quizzes worth 10% of your grade overall. Basically a free 10%. Then there's just two essays where you can pick one of 4 prompts, which are super easy if you've read at least 2 books per unit. Then theres a midterm and a final (cumulative final) but you pick prompts.

Timothy Yu is the GOAT. Haven't shown up for more than 5 lectures this whole semester but it's okay because he posts them online. You can stay home if you're sick. Isn't that nice? When professors treat you like a human? He's so passionate about his course. I almost feel bad no one shows up for the lectures. Highly recommend taking this class.

Prof. Yu has a good energy about him and usefully connects the Asian-American experience to our culture. He is an engaging instructor and not too demanding for readings outside of class. It can sometimes be more difficult than necessary to understand him as he wears a mask during lecture (when he is social distancing). He doesn't have an accent.

It is not recommended for people who are not good at English People who are not good at English will easily lose point There is no attendance for lectures, but there is attendance for dis TA grades both essays and exams There is a lot of reading, and the final exam needs to test all the reading contents and write a 450-750 essay in a limited time.

I had him for 102 and this one was much more involved. He does expect you to complete the reading but I didn't do them as he covered the important ideas in class. The essays were fairly graded and the exams are pretty easy as long as you put in some work.

For this class, there were 3 essays and 1 final. They were quite easy to understand and were graded very easily. The averages being in the 90s. I have never read and it hasn't held me back at all.

You are expected to do a lot of readings which you don't have to. Just watch lectures and make sure u know how the quotes relate to the material. You can just write the essays and do exams based on those. It took 4 hours of my time on average a week including lectures and disussions.

I really like Professor Yu, he's very knowledgeable and passionate about the books and poems that you read. Lectures cover the main points of the books so it's fine if you're a little behind. The passage identification on the midterm and final mostly comes from the slides. The essays aren't too bad, but they definitely look for deep analysis.

Professor Yu was a great lecturer that kept it lighthearted. You will need to make sure to do your readings to succeed in the class. The weekly quizzes were super easy and it isn't hard to do well as long as you read.

Asian Am is a pretty easy lit/ethnic requirement if you still need one. There were only 2 essays due over the semester and there were multiple prompts to choose from. Class was asynchronous so you could really do the lectures whenever. Also participation is a big portion (15%) of your grade so make sure to do the weekly discussion posts.

Tim Yu is a great professor, took this course online and really was not bad for a lit requirement. I actually learned quite a bit and the books we had to read were not terrible. Professor Yu goes over what you need to take away from the texts which is nice and the essays you have to write aren't bad as well. Overall, a great class!

Yu is a cool dude -- great teacher with interesting lectures. All lectures are recorded as well, so you catch miss whenever. LOTS of reading for this class.. and you have to ID passages from them in his exams. Cumulative final. Didn't ever mind when I was on my phone in the front row of lecture hahaha

I liked Tim but.... He did go too far in some of his lectures. Good guy.. but needs to chill when it comes to the books he teaches MAKE SURE U HIGHLIGHT UR BOOKS!

Yu was a great professor, but a real stiff when it came to talking/not paying attention during his class. Class was generally interesting, worth taking if you don't mind reading 7 books and writing two in depth papers.

This is one of my favorite classes I have taken here, and mainly due to the teaching of Professor Timothy Yu. He teaches things in this class that everyone should have knowledge on and he keeps it modern and interesting. I would recommend this class to anyone looking for an ethnic studies class!

Great professor and lecturer. He connects class material to current day issues which is nice. Interesting material and relatively "easy" and engaging class. He provides lecture videos and lectures slides online which is nice for reviewing. A lot of reading but you won't fail if you fall behind on it. Genuinely enjoyed the class!

Professor Yu makes fulfilling your ethnic studies requirement easy! (As long as you like to read books... this is a lit class) He gives great lectures specific to what he and the TAs are looking for on papers and tests. You can even get away without doing some of the readings. Entertaining and approachable guy.

Prof. Yu assigns a lot of readings, but provides all the important information in his lectures, so it is not necessary to read everything. Also, he posts all of his lectures online, so it is easy to miss class. Overall, Yu is very passionate about the material he teaches and creates a great ethnic studies course.

Yu is extremely passionate about his work and really understands the pieces that he teaches. it's worthwhile to pay attention because he offers a lot of strong points/ideas that I had never considered. The essays were interesting to write and graded easily. This is a great course to take if you want your ethnic studies/com a. Easy + interesting :)

Tim was an awesome lecturer. The topic material could have been boring if presented incorrectly but Professor Yu is super great. Lots of reading but don't necessarily need to do it all. Definitely attend discussion, my TA was awesome as well. Overall great class, especially for it being cross listed.

Tim is really a cool, smart guy. The class has a ton of books to read, but not many people read them (I didn't and got a BC). Section attendance is mandatory, an he tells you exactly what you need to know in the review lecture (quotes for exam). I stopped going after midterm and didnt read and still passed. Not a hard class and is ethnic st and lit

His lectures are very good. He does put them all online, so you can miss class. Expect reading quizzes if the class doesn't seem to be doing the readings. There are a total of 10 books and more essays and articles on top of it. Time consuming. TA is a tough grader, don't know about others. Tests are easy.

Great lecturer and very passionate about the topic. Expect to finish a 200-300 page book every week although you don't actually need to finish them. He goes over what he wants you to get from every book in lecture so as long as you go to lecture and read some of the book you're good to go. Two essays and two essay midterms.

There is way too much reading for this class. Reading the books does not help much. All you need to know for the test are the quotes and topics he discusses in lecture. I thought the papers were graded very hard. If you are looking for a lit credit, I would look for a different class.

Lecture capture is amazing! Attending lecture isn't necessary because lecture videos and slides are posted. Midterm was straightforward. The two papers (graded by TA) are your chance to expand on the information presented and exams are your chance to show you read the bookpaid attention to lectures. Sparknoted most of the books and did fine.

The class was pretty easy, but it all depends on your TA because they do the grading of tests, quizzes, and participation. Try to avoid Mia as your TA, because she requires much more work than most TAs in the course and is an extremely hard grader on essays which are 50% of the class grade.

This year (2014) was the first year that Prof Yu used "lecture cam"and it was AMAZING. Practically not necessary to go to lecture at all because the entire recording and slides were online. It is important to go to discussion though. There is a lot to read, but the 2 tests are VERY easy.

Good lecturer and he puts the videos of every lecture up online so you don't need to go to class at all. The class is just 2 papers and 2 exams. There are like 10 novels you are supposed to read but you can get by with a good grade by just sparknoting them. Overall good class if you have to fill a Literature requirement.

This was a fairly easy class. Only two papers, a midterm, and a final. There is a heavy reading load, but he goes over everything in class so you don't really need to read.

Professor Yu is a great professor, and his lectures were always very clear and interesting. There are a lot of novels to read for this class, but the books are very interesting and are not hard to understand at all. He posts his lectures as videos online along with the powerpoints, which is really convenient, and overall, great class and professor!

Tim is an excellent lecturer--always well prepared. There is an absolute ridiculous number of books you are required to read.. And I mean ridiculous. For a 3 credit course the workload is far too heavy; I would look to satisfy an English requirement elsewhere. If you have to take this class your grade will be dependent on your TA. Start praying.

This is a good class to take if you need a lit credit. There are 9 novels you need to get for this class, but you can get by without reading them and just attending lecture. There is only a midterm, a final, and 2 papers. If you are good at writing papers, this class will be an easy A for you.

Because your assignments are graded by TAs, it's going to depend on them. As a lecturer, I found him really fun. He's really clear about the message that he wants to convey and happy to talk if you have a question. Tests are easy 100's if you do the reading and review the key notesterms.

Tim is excellent. He is always well-prepared and has interesting things to say. The reading was fast-paced, but I enjoyed the majority of the books on the syllabus. Exams are fair and straightforward.

I was not really interested in taking this class, but Professor Yu made it much more enjoyable. He was very clear and helpful, and his tests were straightforward.

Loved his class! He posts all the powerpoints online, but still go to lecture because he expands on it. He's been my favorite so far and is very clear in that the test material is all from class. However, be careful to keep up with the readings and not just sparknoting along the way.

He made the lectures very interesting by coming prepared with exactly what he wants to say. All the important info on the powerpoint are what you should know for the exams. There's only 2 papers, a midterm and a final. Make sure you get a good TA because they are the ones grading those. Also, there is a lot of reading!!

He was very knowledgeable in the subject. He was very organized and facilitated great class discussion. He made the topic so interesting that I ended up getting a certificate in Asian American studies. One of the best professors.

Prof Yu was really nice and made the class interesting. Not a hard class but I got stuck with an horrible/pretentious TA which made it waaaay harder

Professor Yu is insightful and a pleasure to learn from. His class gave me a more informed perspective of Asian American portrayals in media and other popular culture.

Focuses too much on the history of the authors compared to the actual content. Exam is not at all what he says it is. Hope for a good TA or your paper grades will suffer.

great professor, interesting reads. some of the texts were hard to understand at first but professor yu did a good job explaining & clearing up any confusions in lecture.

great professor, interesting reads. some of the texts don't make much sense at first but professor yu really clears things up during lecture.

He was very helpful, we didn't have much homework besides reading a lot of interesting books and he was very helpful. I would highly recommend him.

Nice guy, easy class, but the content he lectures on was not at all what was on the tests. He focuses too much on the history behind the text instead of actually doing a close reading.

A great teacher, only 2 tests and 2 papers. The tests were identifying passages (only had to name half of them) and one essay question out of several options. Definitely would recommend his class.
