Avoid this class if you need a healthy, interactive learning experience. The course description got my attention, but I was let down by the overall atmosphere of the classroom. It was awkwardly quiet between her tangential lectures and questions about historical events that she either lived through or knew more about than the average student.

(Spring 2020-2021) The readings in this course were pretty enjoyable but the professor had no slideshows. The lectures were more like discussions which I believe made the class harder (because you almost had to teach yourself what was going on in the novels). The average pages we read was 100-150 before each lecture. Make sure to participate!

I found this class incredibly boring, and even harder to stay focused with 75 minute lectures. Just to go home and read anywhere from 50-100 pages for the next class. Only 4 things in the gradebook: 2 5-page essays(25% each), a 10-page essay(30%), and attendance(20%). Prompts for essays are minimal, so lots of quotes and outside sources required.

First lecture was a red flag when she didn't even go over the syllabus, this continues through out the course as the structure of the class is just nonsense. be prepared to find out your grade at the end of the semester. Lectures are monotone and everyone is basically just doing something else on their computer as she rambles.

Lectures are just her rambling, not clear on what is expected for assignments, unless someone is brave enough to ask, and if you do ask she will answer but not very clearly, and go as far as to make you feel stupid for doing so. Super cool lady with great experiences and stories, just not meant to be a professor

Interesting class that she brought unique insight to, but very unclear on grading.

I've had two classes with Professor Davis now and I really like her as a person and she is super accomplished. However, when it comes to teaching, she's not the best. She does tend to lecture a lot in class and if you don't read for class, it'll be hard to keep up and write papers. Also, she doesn't give clear instructions for assignments.

Professor Davis is clearly passionate about the subject and makes lectures interesting, however she doesn't really explain grading guidelines and sometimes takes a while to give back papers. This makes it a little difficult to improve on papers later on because you couldn't see how you did on the previous ones. Overall, she's a fine professor.

She believes her class is the only one you should care about and no other class(es) matter. She will judge your knowledge and call you out if you're wrong and not be nice about it. After our first paper, the next lecture she spent the entire time bashing and attacking our papers instead of telling us how to improve or simply move on with material.

Super knowledgeable professor, has a lot of reading assignments that are sometimes hard to keep up with if you have a busy week or are taking a lot of courses. Her expectations are clear if you listen. You will not do well on papers if you don't quote the readings she gives/scholarly articles. History websites won't cut it to get a good grade.

fascinating teacher It's amazing how much she has done. Could've used more lecture time to understand points and concepts: was advanced enough that it was an expectation of you to understand the text and speak up if you didn't

Class was boring-note that just because the title of the class is "Black Film" doesn't mean you watch movies in class. It's usually her lecturing at you about the movies we were assigned to watch outside of class. She's a genius, but an awful professor. Somehow got an A on all of the papers, but I honestly couldn't give any advice on how I did that

Do not take classes from this professor. She repeatedly laughed at student's answers in class, didn't reply to emails, and does not explain her expectations for papers and projects. She has interesting stories but it's not worth the trouble of the class.
