Dubois is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his field and delivered very interesting and engaging lectures. I found his class so interesting that I decided to incorporate shamanism into a paper for another class and he was happy to help point me the right direction for my research. Overall a joy of a person and a professor.

Prof. Dubois was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the material for this course. The class was fairly easy with only a few papers and discussion posts throughout the semester. If you go to class regularly and pay attention, you should be able to get an A or close to it. Would recommend if you're looking for an interesting gen ed course.

Cross listed as FLK 443. Professor Dubois is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about this course. This class was not a huge time commitment at all (very low stress). 4 essays and 3 group discussion posts. No exams or quizzes. I definitely recommend taking this class if you're looking for an easy but interesting humanities class!

This class is so interesting because of how passionate and sweet Thomas is. He grades extremely fairly and you will look forward to learning about Sami culture. Highly recommend taking this class, it is not a heavy time commitment at all. You have four essays (3 are 1000 and the final is 2000 max) and 3 short discussions for the whole semester.

Tom is simply a sweet guy and very knowledgeable about the subject. Being online, he had two 50 minute long lectures per week and about 5-7 long readings. I didn't do the majority of the readings and am doing fine. No quizzes or exams at all. Only papers, typically shorter ones but TA might grade harshly. Final is a 2000 word paper. Decent class.

Lots of writing assignments. Talks a lot in lectures but doesn't say much. Assigns 5+ readings per week of 20+ pages. Good professor, very nice. Just a lot of content and I feel like I have learned nothing.

This class is pretty simple. It is a good course to take if you want to learn about different cultures and read stories. The only homework is a few papers and you are not required to watch the lectures. The professor is passionate and his lectures are interesting. Discussion is with a TA who grades some of the work and helps with papers. Good class

Tom's lectures aren't boring to listen to, he tries to make them short, interesting, and adds a personal touch. He's a pretty easy grader but most of the interaction and grading comes from your TA. No tests, no final, just 8 total projects over the course of the semester. Easy 3 credit course as long as you don't mind writing a paper once a week.

Dubois is an extremely entertaining professor. Folk100 lectures consisted of listening to stories and learning the course material through them. It was a very interesting course with fair grading, little homework, and mostly writing assignments. Prof. Dubois is a very nice person who wants to inspire, not just teach.

There are no tests, and about 5 papers. None of the papers are longer than 4 pages and some of the papers are less than 2 pages.

Prof. Dubois was a super cool professor and his class, Folk 352 Shamanism, was the most interesting class I've taken in college. All assignments are written papers outside of class including the finalhe even cancelled class the days our papers were due. Chill class, chill professor, I attended class but idk if it was mandatory. Dubois is the goat

He didn't give us any exam. For the midterms and final, we were given papers to write and the prompt gives you the freedom to write what you want, nothing too specific. He provides readings everyday and we had to write 11 responses (1 page each). So reading 11 articles for the whole semester is enough to pass the class with attendance.

Lectures weren't very exciting, but neither was the subject so it wasn't entirely Tom's fault. He's a very sweet guy and wants his students to succeed, plus he understands that many students aren't actually interested in religion and just need the class for an elective so he grades pretty easily.

tom is such a nice guy. the class was more interesting than I thought it would be but it was still a little boring, especially lectures. this class knocks out both ethnic studies and com b! you could never show up to lecture and still receive an a but you must attend discussion. put in effort on your essays and you will be totally fine

Enjoyed the class. Really nice professor. Not necessarily a though course but if you engage with the material you will learn some interesting things.

Dubois is a nice and funny guy. Some of the material can get confusing but it really isn't necessary to pass with an A. He is lectures basically consist of him explaining all the stories (which are totally not necessary to read). Gives you test questions ahead and allows for notes in exam. Super easy grader, definitely would take again. EASY A!!!!

Dr. DuBois is a very nice person, and a great professor. There are only 3 midterms, but there are some papers which require more creativity because they're vaguely explained and there are no rubrics for anything. Overall, I would take Dr. DuBois again and would recommend him.

Prof Dubois was THE MOST boring professor I've ever had. With that being said, I didn't have to take any notes or listen in lecture whatsoever and I still got an A. I never touched the outside readings. So he's boring but an easy grader. I learned absolutely nothing from him, but it was a nice GPA boost.

Tom is the most amazing prof ever. a lot of kids take his class for an ethnic and he knows that, so doesn't make it ridiculous. do the work with a decent amount of effort and you'll get an A no problem. he wants you to learn and enjoy learning about the topics, not to trick you.. sooo nice and kind!!!! TAKE THIS CLASS!!!

Really knowledgeable (translated the book we read) and interesting. Very clear, understandable, and excited to teach. My biggest complaint was that the lectures were mostly just very long analyses of text we had to read, without adding much. I skipped 23 of lectures and got an A. Lots of essays, about 1 per week for much of the semester.

Took this class over summer, so the lectures are long. But the topics are really interesting. Work load is not heavy, exams are easy if you prepare (notes are allow). I am a chem major, so took this class for ethnic. However, I really like Prof DuBois' lectures and would like to take more classes with him!

Phenomenal, friendly, and enthusiastic. Class will be a breeze as long as you read the assigned readings and take the assignments seriously.

Extremely friendly, and one of the world authorities on Finnish culture and the 'Kalevala'. I wanted to take a class that was original and he delivered on making me interested in a subject I knew nothing about before. He grades more than fairly and is a joy to chat with.

You have to go to every lecture, but if you do that, this class is a cake walk. He's the international authority on the subject. I'm a science major and just took it as an ethnic studies. Wound up really enjoying myself, and learning how to herd reindeer as well. All tests are open note, the papers aren't graded hard, and you barely have to read.

Very knowledgable and easy to understand. You can bring notes to the exams and you get the questions ahead of time. Just be prepared for his surprise quizzes, if you read the chapters ahead of time they will be very easy.

I've taken five classes with Tom because he's the best prof I've ever had. Very easy-going, understanding, nice, and great sense of humor! There is a lot of reading but not exactly necessary for passing the class, just pay attention to his lectures! Definitely worth taking one of his classes!

Excellent Professor - Very open to new ideas and flexible with papers and assignments. Gives out essay questions before the exams and allows notes on the exams. Readings are not at all necessary to pass with an A, as long as you attend lecture and take notes. Lectures are fun, but either take them seriously or read the book, either one will work

Lets you bring notes to the exam. VERY EASY! However, don't bother trying to email him - he doesn't respond.

Interesting and funny lectures. Doesn't make you buy the textbook he wrote and sends out a full PDF. Lets you take notes to the exams. One of the rare teachers who doesn't try to trick you on any assignments and remains open to different viewpoints.

Excellent class and great prof. In the end I'm glad UW made me take an ethnic studies course because I learned a lot and became interested in a subject i knew nothing about at first. Tom's a first rate lecturer and incredibly knowledgeable on the subject (assuming you like lectures). Very approachable in class, but difficult to reach otherwise.

A very unique and funny man to listen to during lecture. Most of the grading for the 100 course was done by the TAs except for the final.

First and foremost - a very easy grader. The class is a bit hapzard - though required for RS majors (though he might not always be the prof). 12 books for the class, 1 for each week. You present on 1 book, participate in discussion on the others, write 2 3-5pg. papers, and one term paper 10-20 pages. Like I said, he's an easy grader.

Very laid back, great sense of humor. Exams were all essay, but he gave the questions out a week ahead of time and allowed one sheet of paper (dbl sided) for use on the exam. Five possible questions were handed out prior; 4 were on the exam. Very easy grader, loves what he teaches . . . take for easy ethnic studies.

This guy is great. He's very chill and not pompous, which is impressive if you consider the incidence of uptight pomposity among professors. Take a class with him; you'll be glad you did.

good class with good potential. lectures right off a powerpoint and pretty boring style, but material is still interesting and exams are easy and straight-forward. get questions ahead of time and can bring a cheat-sheet. good class overall

Great class for a while until an ex-gf tried to commit suicide during finals week. I emailed him many times about it (with police report numbers included to show that it was a real event, not an excuse) & he NEVER REPLIED. I called his phone all summer which had no voicemail whatsoever. NEVER REPLIED even in the end. I handed in work & passed

A great professor. He is one of the smartest people I will ever meet.

Best class ever, Prof. Dubois was enthusiastic about the course material every day, very reasonable grader. My personal favorite prof.
