Prof. Dale is fine. However, his TA, Özlem Eren, is one of the worst TAs I have ever had the displeasure of working with. She is an unnecessarily tough grader, unfair, and not helpful. Because of her, I strongly recommend not taking this class.
Lectures can be extremely dry, and discussion is incorporated on occasion. Once he fell behind schedule he couldn't catch up because he talked so much, even with 75 min lectures. Exams involve memorization of names, dates, locations, etc. Wouldn't recommend if you haven't already taken an AH course.
Very engaging and knowledgeable. Very good at lecture.
Cares a lot about the topic, and is very passionate. However, he had very high expectations that aren't clear for the final papers in his courses and made it difficult to tell your grade in the course until the very end. Very critical on papers & basically wanted me to change my paper days before it was due even though it met all of the criteria.
When he's not going 10 minutes over his time, which isn't even my main complaint about him, he will likely be comparing absolutely anything to Christianity. Every time we talked about a different religious faith such as Buddhism, Hinduism or absolutely anything to be honest, he always has to circle it back to Christianity, which is disrespectful.
Professor Dale's lectures were EXTREMELY dull. So hard to sit through. He was very knowledgeable on the subject, but his exams were very hard to study for. Had to memorize close to 100 pieces of art, which felt like a huge waste of my time. Would not take again
Dale is extremely knowledgeable. Learned a lot from his class. If you are interested in art history, his lectures are really worth listening. In all, highly recommend!
Lectures were very informative and interesting, Powerpoints image heavy, so listen to what he has to say during class. He provides the Powerpoints and extra learning material online, including the images and notecards of the subjects that will be on the exams.
Be prepared for his prolonged lectures, which can make classes after his lecture hard to catch
With hard work an A is definitely doable. Lectures are boring, but go anyway since he gives you notes online. Filling those out definitely helped when studying for tests. Don't bother buying the book, he repeats everything in class. My TA was a life saver in this class. Tests are a bit ridiculous, but an A is obtainable. Study and you'll be fine.
Professor Dale is incredibly knowledgeable, but his lectures can be boring. He can be funny and he's really approachable during office hours. There is one midterm and a final. You have to memorize 100 works of art and some essays, but he basically gives you all the information beforehand. He's happy to give students an A, with a lot of work.
Dale is a very fair, knowledgable professor. His lectures are a little dry, he is perpetually behind in the syllabus, and typically lectures five minutes past the end of class - but he is a fair grader, has reasonable expectations in papers and exams, is helpful in office hours, and can occasionally be pretty funny. Overall I would recommend.
Professor Dale is insanely knowledgeable about what he teaches, but is also insanely boring. Lecture isn't necessary, but reading the book is. The class is tough, mainly because you have to know a TON of information for the midterm and final: preparing for ~14 elaborate essays and memorizing around 300 works of art! I got an A with LOTS of work.
I am indifferent about Dale. The lectures are insanely boring, even if you love art history, but that might be because the room is comfy and the lights are low... falling asleep is a given. The exams are hard, mostly because he gives obscure essay questions (which, in his defense, he gives you before hand). With some hard work, an A is doable.
Lectures can get a bit long, but his speaking is eloquent and lively, not dull, and he presents the material in as exciting a manner as it is possible to make it. Prof Dale definitely knows his stuff--if you pay attention you will learn a lot. He's a nice and somewhat funny guy as well.
Prof. Dale is my HERO. Going to his lecture is the high point of my MWF's. THe course itself is fascinating and Prof Dale narrates it like a pro...he sounds like he's from Boston...no i'm not being sarcastic I LOVE THIS CLASS take it if you like the History Channel. keep up with the reading.
He's a wordy guy, and mildly self-involved, but overall I enjoy listening to him every week. He knows what he's talking about.
He's a nice person, but a BORING prof. The midterms are in essay form and you need to STUDY but they aren't that hard. USE THE BOOK and attempt to attend most lectures even though he just repeats the book. Art history is boring and you may feel drowzy but its worth 4 credits....I guess....Discussion sections are more fun, but the essays are blah
VERY interesting material, but VERY boring instructor. Dale sounded exactly like the Rabbai from Seinfeld who lived in Elaine's building, lol. you can easily get a way with not going to this class. just read the book and go to discussions. discussion was enjoyable despite the weekly quizzes.
Damn...he's boring. You don't need to go to lecture to do well in the class if you read a little and download the slides online. However, lecture is the best way to go if you have issues keeping up with homework.
Art History can be boring no matter how much you love art. Although Professor Dale’s lectures are not too exciting, he is, nevertheless, an excellent instructor. It’s amazing how much he knows about art, especially medieval art. The class is pretty easy, very little homework for 4 honors credits. 2 2-page papers, a midterm and a final.
It isn't a bad class. He knows what he's talking about and covers more than just what's in the book and if you combine the two for the tests it's not bad. Also my TA was very helpful and lectures are long, but he makes some good jokes about college drinking habits and his baldness.
Although the tests and quizzes are quite easy, his lectures are boring and long. He makes jokes that only the old ladies taking the class laugh at.
While his lectures may not have been terribly exciting, it was obvious what we had to know from them. His tests are easy and he basically tells you what is on them before hand. Definitely knows his stuff, I liked him.
His lectures feel really long and are really boring. He talks really fast and doesn't repeat himself ever. The only good thing is that he really knows his stuff.
INSANELY boring and slow... i think i've managed to stay awake during lecture twice the whole year.
Professor goes over time alot and gets behind in his lecture schedule because he is long winded.
