One of the best classes I've taken. Prof. Beatty and Evan Linck, the TA, make astronomy very engaging and exciting. There are physical aspects as well, such as visiting the telescope and the space room, that make the class so much better. Prof. Beatty is very accommodating of students' success and cares about them. The class made me love astronomy.
Great professor, makes the class interesting. I enjoyed being his student!
A super friendly and nice guy to take a class with! I loved his teaching style and the professor put in the lot of effort to make everyone feel welcomed. The way he teaches his content makes it very easy to understand. Homeworks were difficult but prepared you for the exam.
You can really see that proffesor actually enjoys teaching and is actually interested in his own subject. Classes are not boring and is doable even by just reading the slides he makes.
Prof is really nice and lectures are cool (although he just reads the slides), but this is not a good class if you aren't good at math or physics. It's not an easy science credit, although you can do okay with some work. Prof and TA's put in a lot of effort to help you succeed (s/o Teddy!).
Overall I liked Professor Beatty and I found Astron103 to be very interesting. I'd suggest attending lectures even though he usually reads off of the slides. You will be required to use some algebra throughout, but the professor and TA's are a great resource. It's not a freebie class but if you're interested in astronomy it's totally worth taking.
I am not an astronomy major, nor do I have any interest in it. While I definitely could have put in more work in both lecture and discussion, there were times where I had absolutely no clue what was going on. I would not recommend this class to anyone that doesn't absolutely need it.
As a social science major, Professor Beatty made Astronomy 103 extremely interesting for me. He worked on the JWST which is really cool. The class is pretty easy and he just wants you to enjoy astronomy instead of making it really difficult. He obviously knows a lot and likes to make class pretty chill. Recommend him for sure!
Prof Beatty had awesome lectures. He's super funny and knowledgeable which is important for astron bc none of us have ever taken something like it. It's not hard math like people make it out to be. It was so cool to understand the universe with this class. I found it super valuable. Def take Beatty. TAs and Beatty always available for help
REALLY GREAT CLASS/PROFESSOR. There's some math in this course but it's not super complicated, put in the work, you'll do fine. Class had overviews of the main Astronomy subjects but still went into great detail. Professor was very nice and available for office hours. I'd recommend this class to anyone who's interested and wants to learn more.
I would 100% recommend Astron103 to someone looking to fill a physical science/QRB credit. It's definitely not an easy A, but Professor Beatty makes it easy to do well. He navigates topics extremely well and makes tough concepts a lot easier to understand. Very interesting material and a huge takeaway!
Honestly, Professor Beatty was great. But the class and materials covered...that's a different story. DO NOT TAKE ASTRO 103 as an easy science credit....you will be wrong. The course description is so far from what you actually talk about. It's not about fun stuff about the planets - IT'S ALL PHYSICS. A TA even called the class astro physics.
Really enjoyed this class! Lecture attendance wasn't mandatory but I went anyways because his lectures were great. Might be more math involved than some might like, but it's mostly in section assignments and exams are not math heavy. Weekly homework and math exercises, but nothing I found to be busy work. Great option for a QRB credit!
Had Beatty at UArizona, but figured it would be more helpful to put this here now. Great professor for Observational Astronomy as he's an observational astronomer! It was nice to get some practical experience with real astronomy for the first time in this class, as well the great field trip to Kitt Peak. This is about as good as an ASTR class gets.
Great professor. Loving his lectures. Super devoted to teaching and making a difference. He has real practical understanding of the field because he worked on creating the James Webb Space Telescope. Definitely inspired me to double major in Astronomy!
