Get ready for disorganized lectures and lots of reading (if you wanna learn anything). We've noticed that he makes a mistake on the board at least once a lecture, which makes it far to learn from your notes afterwards. Least favorite prof so far.
nice person. disorganized lectures. did not know my final grade until I saw it on my student center. one of the worst experiences ever.
If you ask for help he will just reread the problem to you and get frustrated when you do not get it. He makes students question if they are good enough for the major. Not much material in the class he only does examples in class, exam problems are more of a test of problem solving skills and less of what is learned in class.
Pros: Dr. Root makes a point of remembering students names, wants to see us succeed, and is very encouraging. Cons: 1) The textbook doesn't align with the coursework as well as it could 2) Grading criteria is unclear. I had no clue what grade I'd get until I saw it on my transcript. 3) Lectures are difficult to follow and all over the place.
Lectures are a little more traditional, no slides/technology, just writing with marker on the board so be prepared to take lots of notes. Although Professor Root assigns difficult homework problems, they are doable if you apply yourself and go to discussion/office hours, which I recommend going to because getting to know him helps to ask questions!
Dr. Root was a very good professor. Although at times, he would go pretty fast through new material, he did a great job explaining calculations and the importance of what we are doing. His tests are not terrible, but he will throw in a small question regarding some minuscule topic we talked very little about in class, so be aware of that.
Prof. Root is a little unorganized, but overall he is a good professor. The exams are sometimes a little too difficult, but I learned a lot from this class.
Thatcher is a pretty good prof but some of the stuff he does just astounds you. He is very unorganized, doesn't communicate with his graders, and just overall is kind of unhelpful if you don't get something. Most of the homework problems i got wrong were ones I worked with him on. I ended with an A though so his curve must have been good.
Good stuff in lecture, gets kind of repetitive though. Tests are long, sometimes tricky but doable. Concept questions on tests draw on pretty specific things. Overall a good experience. I would take another class with him for sure.
Really good professor! He is really nice and very excited to teach everyday. The class helped me get more interested in chemical engineering. However, the homework and exams can be tricky and long, but very doable.
He was a very good and interesting professor, one of the better ones I've had in CBE so far. I'd definitely like to take another of his classes! Exams were not bad at all, they were pretty clear and the practice exams were very close.
Great teacher! a little dry if you dont have an interest in ChemE, but if you do, he is terrific
Boring lectures
Root is awesome, I really got interested in the material.
Root is amazing. He loves to teach and will really help you out. Get to know him because he's helpful, easy to understand, has a lot of experience and understands students well. By far one of my favorite profs at UW. Class is so-so for ease...it depends on how you do on exams but homework is okay if you put a lot of time into it (A LOT!).
This guy was fun to have. He was really excited to teach the class everyday and the examples that he did were engaging and interesting. He has a ton of chemical engineering knowledge and he loves to share it. He is very helpful during office hours and his exams weren't too bad. The homework takes a long time, but that was the only bad part.
It really doesn't matter who your professor is for this class. The class is very fun, and you will get an A as long as you can get along with your teammates and finish your project. He really doesn't work with our group much, he doesn't even know our names..but it doesn't matter. He's a nice guy, and the class is easy/fun/interesting.
Professor Root is a really nice guy, and an adequate educator. The homework and tests are a bit unfocussed, ranging from far to easy to far too difficult. The text for this class isn't very good.
