I've struggled in the past, and he introduced me to amazing resources.
Let me preface this by saying I've taken Calc 2 before. Nonetheless, I found Professor Olson's lectures to be vastly more interesting and understandable than my previous professor's. His lecture style is example heavy, so ensure you're comfortable learning that way, but if you are confused and ask a question he will always explain it for you.
I really liked him as a person, but I think he forgot that Calc 2 concepts are challenging to undergraduates. He went really in depth and got off topic frequently. Lectures were either too fast or too slow. He's the most helpful in office hours in terms of math, and is a very kind man. Overall, I would take another course with him if I had a chance
He was a pretty good professor but he tended to get distracted a lot during lecture and taught it at a bad pace. I felt like if he focused a little more we could have had some review days for the final. But he was good at explaining most things and I feel like I learned a lot.
Math 112 was a difficult experience, without the undergraduate helpers it's very hard to receive in class help. Lessons make minimal sense.
This is for Math 222, not 221. He's a good guy, but I think he forgets these are pretty difficult concepts for people who are first learning them. Goes at superspeed through examples without explaining that well. I am very lucky I have a good TA that has basically taught me the course.
Dr. O is a great prof who provides clear lectures and gets to the point. Provides good definitions and examples. Easy to reach via email for missing class. Connects content to real-world situations. Exams and writing practices were very easy. Exam review sessions are so helpful.
Dr O was always quick to email back and was very accommodating with quiz and WP retakes. The class and the material is next level easy, I got an A and never went to lecture, just make sure you go on Thursdays when he gives little mini quizzes so you can get those easy points.
It's easy to get an A/AB in the class. HW is assigned 2x a week, online, & unlimited tries to get the answer. Weekly in class quizzes are posted the day before. He drops 2 of the lowest quiz and hw scores. The lectures do feel pointless/are overly complicated/too fast, so go to the exam reviews that he has (they help a ton)!
Travis Olson is an amicable professor, but that's all. He does not respond to emails, either on outlook or canvas, and he failed to respond to two emails I sent in regards to missing class due to a funeral and two other emails asking about the final. He does not put exam dates in the calendars, and two exams (50% each) were 14 days apart.
MATH 221's grade is very exam heavy, The Organic Chemistry Tutor is better than Travis Olsen, it's very easy to lose points on discussion quizzes and homework. My advice for an A is to skip lecture, do past exams and ignore all other content and try to attend all quizzes. There are better conceptual explanations on the internet especially areas.
Grade is mainly based on exams and lectures weren't amazing as he goes through concepts quickly, but they were ok. If you study outside of class and take as many of the past/practice exams as possible you'll be fine. Past exams use similar set up and questions so go through them.
This man will not respond to any of your emails. Avoid at all costs.
Olson was a totally solid professor. He's a very clear speaker and is relatively funny. Class is certainly difficult and you will need to study outside of class to get a good grade (shoutout to Professor Leonard on YT). However, the tests are well structured/fair in the sense that they are quite similar to the practice tests. So study those a lot.
He was a solid lecturer, sometimes went too fast but pace was ok most the time and he'd crack jokes or randomly sing which kept me awake. I ended up doing most of my learning from the TA but the lectures were useful for introducing me to the topic. This class is very exam heavy(29% of your grade for each of 3 exams) so be ready to lock in for exams
Professor Olson was great at lecturing, however the way that the class was distributed for grades made it extremely difficult to get a good grade. 87% of your final grade are from two midterms and the final exam.
Travis was a decent professor. However, he often gets sidetracked and forgets to thoroughly explain brand new concepts to the class. If you haven't taken calc before, you may struggle with him as a professor. Some things you need to teach yourself.
I don't recommend Travis as a professor if you don't need to. He goes too fast during lecture without explaining himself which almost makes the lecture pointless. You're going to want a good TA if you have him. You need to teach yourself almost everything. Taking calc before this would maybe make it better, but if you haven't good luck.
I think he's a funny guy, and would occasionally make jokes in lectures. He's got a swag dad vibe and I somehow love it. The class is not easy by all means, but I'd say he did his best with the weirdly structured syllabus. Exams were doable as long as you study a lot from past exams as they were pretty similar.
Always cheerful and funny during lecture and makes the content as easy to learn as it can be. Yes, the course is difficult, but that's because it's calculus. He said he's taught calc for almost two decades which is evident by his ability to explain things in the most intuitive ways. The mathematical notations he uses are also helpful and make sense
He's a really nice, personable professor, but he just doesn't teach the material well. He goes on a lot of tangents, you have to look online after class most of the time to finish your notes (which are fill-in-the-blank), and you have a quiz to take pretty much every single class period. Do not recommend.
Like many other people have mentioned, nice guy but not a great teacher. He mainly goes over examples in class and hands out elementary school style "fill in the blank" note sheets. You will often find yourself teaching yourself content that you should have learned in class. Also, quizzes almost everyday which are easy but annoying
Nice person, terrible teacher! Test content differs from class material, frustrating unrelated questions on quizzes, lags behind in course, slow grader with minimal feedback. Transfer to another section if possible.
Travis was funny and seemed to care a lot, but he was just kind of confusing and hard to follow. He's fine for the class, like you'll do fine, but be prepared to teach a lot of it to yourself. The exams are way harder than anything you go over in class and don't seem to fit the stuff he actually taught.
Average professor. He is just fine for Calc 1 since you are probably better off learning most of the material by yourself anyway. Tests were actually pretty hard with class averages often falling into the low 70s and high 60s. It was curved by a letter grade at the end of the semester though.
