Explained fundamental chemistry concepts to students well and was overall pretty nice/caring

great professor and very encouraging

Hard class but the way he explained it made sense

Chemistry 103 has been by far one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. Both Professor Nathanson and Brunold are very supportive and interactive professors. They explain concepts very throughly and are easy to access for help after class. I would not have passed this class without them.

Brunold is an amazing prof that checks in with is students from beginning to end of class. He's very accessible through emails and understand of unexpected circumstances. He does have an accent, which sometimes makes lectures hard to understand, but he truly cares about his students doing well.

Chem is not my strong suit, and I've never really enjoyed it. But hands down I will admit, this guy is a good professor. You can tell he is very smart, and this class is so well organized. Genuine guy, ready to help you, wants his students to succeed.

Super chill professor. Didn't really talk to him that much but he was super lenient when I was ill with assignments and the lectures are really well designed and engaging. Tests aren't really that hard if you adequately prepare, the practice exams are basically the exams.

Professor Brunold's lectures are interactive and humorous. He is easily available after lectures or during office hours, and explains concepts one-on-one if a student asks, even if the question isn't within the syllabus. Although the class is challenging, he makes the class feel enjoyable. He deserves every ounce of positivity directed towards him.

Everything is taught in lectures that will be on the test. He is an engaging teacher. Exams are returned on paper which is very nice.

Professor Brunold always had engaging lectures that went through the major concepts in a very detailed and easy-to-understand way. Although the course itself is time-consuming, Professor Brunold is always willing to be flexible and seems to truly care about both the performance of his students and their overall well-being as well.

Brunold is an amazing professor and it's clear he cares a lot about his students' success. The class is tough and the workload can be a lot, but if you put time and effort into the pre-class assignments and studying for exams, you should end up with a decent grade.

Brunold was a fantastic chemistry teacher; He made lectures fun. The class is challenging, and exams are tough (the curve is generous). His exams are formatted differently than most 103 classes, having half MC and half SA responses. Be prepared to do a lot of studying, practice problems, etc.

Overall okay professor, but his exams were incredibly difficult. My worst exam grade was a 73%, but the class average was so low that a 70 and above was an A.

Professor Brunold truly cared about students success in the course and be cause he is well known across the department, he has an advantage in being able to make his own rules when it comes to what he thinks is best for his students. He was also very transparent on what we would see on exams.

Prof Brunold is a thorough professor with a sick Swiss accent. He often offered us answer slides when other profs specifically asked him not to give them to us, and they were always super helpful for the exams. He made certain that if something was on the exam, he gave us at least one example. Super nice guy too if you have to reach out!

Professor Brunold was a great lecturer with some jokes every now and then during lecture. However, the tests were difficult and it was stressful not knowing where I was at in the class based on only exam scores.

I absolutely hated chemistry, but Brunold seemed like a good professor who cared about teaching. He was also pretty funny. His class policies were pretty reasonable, and he was easy to reach even though my lecture had 300 students in it. If he ever reads this, I hope he's having a nice day; he deserves it.

Brunold was a good lecturer and cares about his students. Though for being a 100-level course, even being 4 credits, it was very work-heavy. I didn't enjoy the grading style as well, as it made me anxious with all exams graded based on your peer's scores. Due to the curve and Canvas, I thought I was going to end with a C or D, but got a B.

Brunold was a great lecturer and cares about his students. However, for being a 100-level course, even being 4 credits, the course was very work-heavy. I was not a fan of the grading style, due to the way the course was curved it was hard to tell where you were at for a grade. I was very anxious thinking I had around a C/D and ended with a B.

Professor Brunold is an amazing professor. Would definitely take again and strongly recommend him for Chem 103!

Thomas was an amazing professor. Although this class wasn't easy and I struggle with test taking he was a great teacher, understanding, personable, and caring. I am grateful that I had him as a professor and would recommend him to any student going into chem. If I could give him 6 stars I would. Thank you Thomas.

Chem 103 was an especially hard course, but Professor Brunold is a great lecturer. When I accidentally submitted the wrong pdf for a lab report and only realized once it was graded, I emailed him about it and he was really understanding and helpful!

Professor Brunold's lectures are easy to follow and have good examples of what to expect on an exam. The class overall has a lot of reading and outside work, and if you don't do it, the class is very difficult and the lectures will make no sense.

I highly recommend Professor Brunold for Chem 103. He cares very much about his students and will make changes in our favor. Lectures were useful but make sure you do pre-lecture work to prepare for it. He often gives hints for tests and interacts with students on a regular basis in lecture. I wish he was teaching 104!

Professor Brunold is a fair grader that expects his students to put in effort but gives them every opportunity to succeed. His lectures are funny and engaging and his personality is always positive.

Dr. Brunold is fantastic. He is very clear on what we need to know for tests and quizzes. He covers the important topics and is very good at explaining and teaching chemistry. His lectures are great, and he frequently cracks small jokes which brightens everyone up. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Brunold for chem 103.

Very clear with what you need to know for exams and quizzes. Wants students to do their best and is always willing to stay after lecture to talk and provide assistance.

Eager to teach, and understanding. The problem with this course is that like any other course in chem at UW-Madison, it is specified for students who are doing inorganic/mat inside this department. Otherwise, this course is less than useless. This, along with many TA duties inside chem for grad students, makes life miserable and you might get sick.

He is an amazing professor and genuinely cares about his students. He's willing to stay a lot after class just to help his students and even encourages it. He is GREAT overall.

Professor Brunold was such a nice professor and really tried to give you the best chance at succeeding in his class. he would stay late after class for questions and offered study sessions before exams (though the exams were difficult). He made clear what would be expected of you on the exams. Loved his class.

Prof. Burned was a fantastic teacher for CHEM 103 (I wish I could have him for CHEM 104). He definitely knows what he is talking about, he will give you an extension if necessary, and he seems to genuinely care about your success in the course and understanding the material. Overall my favorite teacher from the semester.

Professor Brunold is a very impressive person in many aspects, teaching included. He teaches at his own pace, making sure to cover everything and answer all questions. He is incredibly responsive and very encouraging. He even shifted our entire class average up because he wanted more people to get an A or AB. Overall, try hard and it will pay off.

I LOVE HIM SO MUCH HES TBE FUNNIEST AND NICEST AND WILL CURVE UR CLASS

Loved him as a professor. Such a nice guy and really cared about his students. He gives good lectures and posts the slides online in case you miss something. The course itself is challenging but he is ready to answer any questions. Top 24% of the class get an A minimum and the exams are curved. Really enjoyed learning from him!!

I LOVED having Brunold as a teacher. He was a fair grader and very caring. Most learning is done before class and topics are gone over during lecture. The class was difficult but he made it understandable.

I came into this semester worried about this class that I heard so much about. Professor Brunold couldnt have been better. I struggled on the first two tests but he gave me a textbook from his office for more practice problems and I beat the test average for the first time in the semester on the third midterm and finished with a B. Take him.

I LOVED having him as a professor. The class is hard, and it will be no matter the professor, but Brunold was willing to help and knew how to keep the mood light. Overall, he was by far my favorite professor and after hearing about other professors for chem 103, he is one of the better ones. Would definitely recommend to anyone taking chem 103.

**Best Chem 103 Professor** Professor Brunold made Chem 103 much more enjoyable from a students perspective. The class was very challenging and time confusing for a general chemistry course. However, Brunold seemed really care to about student development and learning. He goes above and beyond is making sure students are well prepared.

Professor Brunold's lectures are extremely boring, and I honestly found it more useful to watch the online lectures that canvas provided instead. He is also terrible at responding to emails. Furthermore, none of the exams are like the practice exams he provides either. All in all, I would recommend finding a different professor if you can.

Brunold is engaging and funny during lectures. Taking good notes and understand pre-class activities (Required before every lecture) is super important. Class is a lot of work but not difficult at all if you keep up, especially if you took ANY chemistry in high school. Tests are somewhat difficult but you get a notecard and a very solid curve.

Brunold is a great Professor. He is extremely accommodating to late work and curves, and his explanations in lectures are great. He really knows the material. One tip- TAKE NOTES ON THE PRE CLASS. Most of the concrete learning done is in the pre-class and the lecture helps you finalize and expand on the topics.

I took Professor Brunold as a first year here at UW. He broke down the difficult concepts of chemistry and makes it much easier to understand. For the class in general, it makes it easier if you took chem in high school but Brunold is always willing to help you understand a hard concept and help you be successful in his class.

I loved professor Brunold so much! He is so sweet and honestly such a good professor. He is very caring and really cares about how well each student improves. This was my first semester at college and I was nervous for chemistry, but he made it so much better. I highly recommend taking chemistry with him if you have to take it.

Thomas shows genuine care towards his students and he really want to see you succeed, no doubt. He loves to answer questions from the students and even willing to stay after class for 40 minutes or longer in order to help students that want to ask questions directly, one-to-one to him. Blessed to have him as my lecturer!!!!

Prof Brunold is an amazing guy and an amazing teacher! He shows genuine interest in his students and clearly cares about the material. He wants to see his students succeed! Any email I wrote to him he has responded very kindly to within the hour. The tests are hard and the class is a lot of work, but there are a TON of resources and support to help

Love Prof Brunold, super caring and enthusiastic, and he is always encouraging.

I genuinely love this professor so much? I suffer from anxiety and have a hard time asking questions in my classes. However, this prof is so approachable it makes it a lot more easier to ask questions. He's also very considerate and will actually try to help you if you're stuck with something instead of referring you to the help desk.

Chem 103 is difficult, but the way Brunold teaches it gives every student the best possibility of getting the grade they deserve. His tests are more difficult but he gives a much more generous curve which you will appreciate! He's available for students and does his best to clarify confusing points. Grades the tests in 1 day. Amazing!

Professor Brunold is an amazing teacher who clearly cares about his students. His lecture sessions went over practice problems that were really helpful in preparing for the exams. His exams were extremely fair and while it wasn't easy, it was always on stuff that was covered. He was extremely patient and truly wanted his students to learn.

I did not have him online but he was the only teacher to assign problems on the test instead of 50 multiple choice. Tests were extremely hard and the class curve was ridiculously high considering everyone taking the class was super competitive. My TA was a harsh grader(this varies) but all in all dont take this class if you arent serious about it.

LOVE HIM. he's a sweetheart and super kind. he has 3 exams and a final which were pretty big/heavy on the material. weekly labs or quizzes. he grades on a curve. the lecture was not mandatory but the discussion was. TA's were a hit or miss.

He is a great professor but the things that I learned in his lectures, and his hand out practice exams were never the same when it came to mid terms and finals. He makes you work for the grade and he is a tough grader.

Is clear about what is going on in the class, what is coming up, and how to be prepared.

Thomas is THE BEST. Hes so sweet and clearly cared about every student. This class in general requires a lot of work but Thomas provided all the resources he could and offered test questions in his lectures.

Out of all the Chem 103 professors he has the hardest and longest exams making it impossible to finish on time. Other than that he knows what he is talking about and is really good at explaining the work.

Brunold is a good professor that teaches pretty well. However, his quizzes and tests are incredibly hard so be prepared to either struggle on the tests or put in a lot of time to actually get a good grade.

Professor Brunold is amazing. He is very approachable and understanding of stress and will change deadlines occasionally. He gives great, yet overly detailed example problems in lectures but the same type of problems usually end up on his exams/quizzes. He provides an old test of his which is the exact format of the real test. I wish he taught 104!

His online lectures are generally unhelpful. I would study the material (discussion packets, homework, practice exams, etc.) for DAYS in advance of exams and still get Cs or BCs on them. He often includes multipart questions or questions more difficult (or entirely different from practice material) that are hard to finish in time if at all.

Prof. Brunold is a good choice. He's extremely vigilant at making sure students understand concepts in lectures and at giving follow up emails about upcoming assessments/lecture notes/due dates.

Thomas was a amazing prof. to have for chem 103. Chem 103 is a very difficult class and exams are hard but Thomas released really excellent practice exams and material to study from. I would really recommend the CLC resources as well as doing problems from the textbook as he write exams very similar to that!

Tom is super nice and gives great lectures. If you pay attention to the material he gives and try to do well on the assignments, you'll be fine. I would say that he gives long homework assignments, so prepare for that if you are taking his class with another difficult course.

Chem 103 is a hard class, however Brunold is a great professor and the course is structured in a way that if you pay attention, work hard and take advantage of the resources available to you, it is easy to do well.

LOVE this man. Chem 103 was pretty hard for me, but it's DEFINITELY doable, you just need to put in the work, especially through practice problems. He's an awesome lecturer and probably the coolest person ever. His exams are very similar to the practice one he puts on Canvas, but do a lot of practice ones.

Thomas is an incredible lecturer and is arguably the best 103 professor from what I've heard. This class is more work than most science classes, but is important for many majors. Don't take it if you're looking for breadth credits. There is preclass homework for every lecture, and homework due every week. Stay on top of work and you'll be okay.

Brunold is an amazing professor. His lectures are always engaging and connect concepts to real world topics, and he is extremely helpful outside of class. He also regularly updates the class on the exam curve which allows you to get an estimate of your grade throughout the semester. Chem 103 is super hard but Brunold teaches it well.

Professor Brunold does a perfect job of keeping the class entertaining but also to the point. His lectures are very interactive and he always explains the many examples/problems he uses in class. 10/10 would take one of his classes again.

He is the best Professor Ive EVER had! He is humorous in his lecture and very patient about every dumb questions I asked. CHOOSE HIM AND U WONT REGRET!!!

One of the few lecturers who kept his class engaged. His lectures are humorous and all the concepts are very clearly explained with real life applications. I wish I went to class more often as I will probably never have a professor like him again.

Dude is a great professor. His exams are hard but fair based on the material he gives you to study from. He is super friendly if you come in and ask questions for office hours plus he has a sweet accent.

Although I found his class to be somewhat difficult, I really enjoyed having Professor Brunold as a teacher. He is probably the most naturally funny professor I have had so far, and he is also quite skilled at keeping the class's attention and clearly communicating course content.

I'm a junior now and he is still the best professor I've had.

Brunold is really great professor for taking Chem103. His lectures are usually interesting and he can be quite funny. He is really helpful in office hours and will give hints on whats on the upcoming exam if you go talk to him. Exams can sometimes be harder but a the curve helps a lot. Best professor I've had so far.

Such a nice guy. Enjoyed attending his lectures. He truly cares about his students success and you can tell. Meet with him during office hours or schedule an appointment with him. He is very understanding and if you meet with him before exams he tells you a few hints on what is on them. The curve saves lives!

Brunold is a very clear and concise prof. Lots of tophat questions in lecture, but he gives you time to complete them. The lecture slides are posted online in advance which is very helpful. He is very entertaining and his jokes make lecture enjoyable. Oh, and the curve saved my life.

Great professor. Funny, caring, and very smart. He explains things well and makes classes more fun. Tests are fair but tough. Exam averages are 65%-70% which can be a good thing.

Tests are very difficult, but fair. He very clearly articulates what will be on the tests (pay attention to exam expectations) and also shows the exam curve after each test. The lectures move quickly and are interesting with a lot of participation. Wish he taught 104

This class is challenging and time consuming, but having Brunold as a professor makes it hard to hate. He keeps lectures engaged with his sense of humor and fast paced teaching style. I would take another course with Brunold in a heartbeat.

The course is hard but Brunold tries to make lectures enjoyable and answer student questions.

Fun guy to listen too but his tests make you think. He really gets lectures to participate with his sense of humor.

He's very engaging during lecture. I like his teaching style. Exams are very clear as far as what is going to be on them.

He knows what he is talking about and will take the time to explain all topics thoroughly.

Brunold is a great professor and wants his students to succeed. He made his lectures easy to follow and not too boring. Go to his office hours for help, he will give you a lot of help for midterms and the final exam if you go in to visit him before them. His tests are pretty tough but there is a nice curve at the end.

Brunold's lectures to me seemed very bland mainly because he is very monotone... it is very hard to pay attention because he does not seem to be enthusiastic about the topics. The tests get harder as the semester moves on, and the final was the hardest, although he does give a decent curve. Tip for success: Put in what you want to get out of it.

Thomas is a really nice guy, and he keeps lecture moving with jokes and Tophat questions. He wants everyone to succeed, but his tests are very challenging. I got average of 62 on the three midterms and managed to get an 83% on the final after studying my ass off. There is a generous curve but you still have to work for your grade.

Professor Brunold was awesome! Lots of homework, but as long as you keep up with everything and get help when needed, you will be fine. He really cares for his students, and he's a funny guy!

Really cares about students doing the best they can and makes it very clear what you are expected to know for exams. Sometimes the lectures fall behind the online homework but as long as you read the textbook and do the lecture prep you will be fine.

After taking Honors Chem and AP Chem in high school, I thought that this class would be an easy A, boy was I wrong! Beware of students who drop from CHEM109 into this course, as I will guarantee that they will raise the average. This class is also pretty detailed in some aspects of chemistry (i.e. molecular orbitals) but skims others (redox rxns)

Thomas is a great professor and I wish he also taught chem 104. His lectures are sometimes a little boring or too detailed but the exams are fair. He provides practice exams to review, which are almost always VERY similar to the actual exams.

He is very good at making sure every student is well prepared for lecture and exams. His lectures are a little hard to remain attentive at though if you are already slightly familiar with the material.

He is very optimistic and usually pretty easy to understand. He is very good at answering questions, and is pretty fast to respond to his emails. His tests are really hard to get done in the time period, but it's curved, so It's ok. All the activities that are given are usually pretty helpful, so do all of them.

Brunold is overrated, but fine. His lectures never correlate with preclass, we are always behind. Honestly I learned most of the material outside of class, he taught me very little. But he's better than other professors. Tests are hard and there is not enough time, but with the curve it is possible to get an A with lots of studying.

He's got awesome character, spirit, and knowledge. I want him for all of my chemistry courses for all of time.

I was a TA for Thomas in and have taught for 3 other Professors. He's my favorite !

Thomas is a really good lecturer. He makes sure students understand the material before moving on. The exams can be difficult, but they are usually like the practice exams he sends out and he will adjust the curve accordingly. If you go to lecture every once in a while and do the discussion worksheets, you'll be fine.

A great professor for a really tough class. The tests were hard, but manageable. He makes class fun and entertaining. I would recomend him over and over again. He is also very understanding and does not look down on his students.

Brunold is my favorite professor at UW Madison. His lectures were really interesting and I loved attending them. Would take him again if I could!

He tests hard but some good studying and attendance at labs and discussions help a lot.

Brunold was a great 103 Prof. Tests were almost exactly like the practice exams he handed out. If you do the practice tests and pay attention during lecture an AB is fairly easy to obtain.

This guy has the best lecture technique I've ever seen. Clear, engaging, and precise. Best professor ever. Seriously.

Practice exams are the exact same format as test
