I took this class in the honors FIG and really enjoyed it. The seminar is essentially a discussion on the assigned readings and Prof. Nadler does a good job of interacting with students and allowing them to interact with each other. He explains concepts well and gives good feedback on the papers.
Professor manages to take complex philosophical concepts and break them down into easily understandable parts in class. Never condescending, always willing to help students understand, very nice.
Nadler was my favorite professor I have ever taken! I thought this class would be hard since it was outside of my usual STEM related classes, but even though some concepts were difficult, he really went above and beyond to help his students understand! He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. I would take this class again if I could!
Some of the topics in the course were interesting but the lectures were completely unrelated to the assigned paper prompts. I felt like there wasn't a lot of guidance for what was expected of the papers. A lot of the concepts were all over the place. The readings are tough and discussions are unorganized and everyone just talks in circles.

A great philosophy course taught in a way that makes sense. The class consists of open dialogue about reading from famous philosophers. Professor Nadler is charismatic and always able to continue the conversation. Only 3 papers make up your grade, however. All with very little guidance.
Prof. Nadler is a wonderful teacher. He explains philosophy well, and he is a decorated philosopher himself. He is funny, witty, and personal. He is also a tough grader. He is blunt with his comments and also very up front. He is approachable and willing to edit/help with papers. This class had no tests. I would love the opportunity to work again.
Hes a good professor and clearly knows what hes talking about. I found the class to be a bit dry and not nessesarily what I expected a philosophy class to be like. You can get away with not doing the readings, then cramming one reading related to the essay prompts for the exams and be fine. Good professor just dont think philosophy is for me.
Nadler is easily one of the best professors I've had. Classes are like discussions, which is nice because you will actually get to know the prof. Manages to make even the strangest philosophy (cough Spinoza cough) understandable. Good comments on papers. Great guy too, very funny and good at reading the room. Would highly recommend for any class.
Nadler is the best philosophy professor I've ever had, possibly the best professor I've ever had. He likes to run his classes like discussions, and he listens to everyone with respect and treats you like a philosopher. Nobody seems to go to his office hours but they are so helpful for papers. I've had him for two classes now, looking for more.
A great teacher who prides himself on explaining philosophy clearly.
Nadler is amazing. Philosophy 104 is a very small seminar and we all got to know each other. I highly recommend taking a class from him, he is at once insightful and relatable.
Nads is the best. The class I took was a small seminar, and the entire class was just discussing the ideas presented in the readings. A lot of people didn't do the readings, but they're really not that bad, and you kind of want to have read the thing your discussing... No tests, just three five page essays.
The lectures will be more interesting to you if you do the reading, so that you can actually understand what is being talked about.
Professor Nadler is prime. He truly cares about students and he learns everyone's name in the lecture!!!. He is also funny and an all around great man. All we had to do in my philosophy class was write three, 5 page papers (which is easier than it sounds on the topic he gives you). You were also graded on your discussion participation.
Professional, not driven (what seemed to me)by any emotions, which is awesome especially when students engage in a heated discussion. He loves Spinoza but will defend and object any given position. I think he is the best in Philosophy Dept.I couldn't stand certain philosophers, but his style of teaching compensated for that.
Hist of Modern. He makes Spinoza manageable. That's reason enough to take this class. He's written several books on him and was previously the head of the dept. Happy to answer questions during and after class and in his office. Take a class with this professor.
Excellent prof, lectures were very interactive and interesting. The readings are a bit challenging but he explains them really well (so its alright if you didn't understand them completely) and then they make for fascinating discussion.
Simply excellent. I found him a joy to listen to, and I learned a lot from him. He has an amazing ability to answer students' questions without being adversarial and is one of the clearest philosophy professors I have ever had. You will not regret taking his history of modern philosophy course!
This class doesn't come with much homework but you have to read a lot of philosophy books. It makes you think hard and Nadler is a good teacher but you have to write 3 papers which are each 20% of your grade and is graded by a TA. My TA was a super strict grader therefore this class was very difficult.
This professor was extremely clear with his class materials. However, make sure you attend the class, and read the materials you intend to write on. Easy final.
Prof Nadler is a bucket of tricks: witty, down to earth, and extremely clear presentation. He answers EVERY question put to him thoughtfully, and is never condescending. No doubt the best Professor I've ever had.
Prof Nadler is one of the best philosophy professors at UW. He has a wealth of experience on Modern Philosophy (1600s-1800s) and has unparalleled expertise on Spinoza. Exams gave you paragraphs that you had to match to certain philosophers. Papers not extremely demanding. Really interesting and well-organized class. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Awesome professor! I had never taken a philosophy class before this one, but it was definitely worth it. He is extremely intelligent, and he made classes interesting each and every time. I'd recommend taking intro philosophy with him if you can.
Although the class consists of a lot of questions and no answers, Professor Nadler does a great job in making the subject matter interesting. If you're going to take philosophy 101, take it with him. Go to lecture and you will Ace the final in 20 minutes. If you skip lecture, you'll fail the final.
AWESOME teacher. Really clear, very interesting, I'm sad to be done. Not much work, mostly reading. Only assignments are three papers, which can be kinda tough, but can be enjoyable to write too, and you get choices for which papers you write. Attendance to discussion is mandatory. The final is designed to be really easy if you go to lecture.
Steven Nadler is an amazing prof. He stimulates great discussion during lecture, is knowledgeable but respectful of students views, and makes everything interesting. Grade consists of three 5-pg papers, a very easy final, and attendance/participation. Great course.
The best professor I've had. He genuinely cares about the students and makes the class a lot of fun. The atmosphere in his classroom is like no other college course - you know everyone and everyone knows you.
One of the best professors I've ever had.
Amazing. Seek out his classes and take them.
Great prof. A bit opinionated and biased, but, over all, amazing experience - take a class with him if you can!
Incredibly clear and helpful. Any opportunity to take a seminar/class from Prof. Nadler should be taken advantage of.
Professor Nadler is an amazing professor! Not only is he extremely knowledgeable on the subject matter (as you would hope he would be) but really encourages his students to try their hardest and is really behind each and every one of them. I really hope that I will be able to take another course with him.
Nadler is an aamazing professor. He is extremely clear, an overall great teacher. I really enjoyed the class as well, it incorporates a ton of different philosophies throughout the semester. Plus, no final!
Great teacher, lead great discussions. Made the class sooo fun.
Excellent class. Loved the atmosphere. The more you participate, the more you get out of the class. Three papers, no tests, but lots of reading and interpreting.
Stevo was far and away my favorite professor of the semester. The class isn't too difficult--it's mostly reading--but he always kept us interested and engaged. I'm looking forward to taking another of his classes next semester.
Nadler is a hard teacher, but this class is well worth it if you are intrested in philosophy but dont know where to start. The man had his last book shortlisted for pulitzer, so he knows what he's doing. a wonderful professor. MUST TAKE.
oh, my god, I love this man. thanks for giving me my life back, nadler.
Professor Nadler cut through the strange wordedness of ancient texts and in doing so showed us some nifty insights. Some philosophy profesors get really far afield from reality. He still makes sense.

The class sucked, the dude is awesome!
I'm not a big fan of philosophy, but this guy kept me interested. He's a very tough grader, but he will look at your outlines for papers.
Did not give a great over view of philosophy. Very passionate about ancient history. Would not recommend for someone wanting a wide variety of knowledge about this subject.
