One of the kindest professors. Very passionate about his work and is very accessible outside of class or after class. I could always ask him questions about the material. Also shoutout to his TA Mark Robinson he's also the goat.

Didn't need to attend lecture, but he was very knowledgable about the literature.

Lectures were not needed at all -- they were full of rambling and droning on and on that put me to sleep all the time. The TA was amazing though and was a way better instructor. Not horrible but I didn't learn as well with him and lectures are absolutely optional.

He's clearly passionate about the material and the material is interesting enough. It can be fun, though it's rarely engaging. The lectures are fairly dry and often irrelevant, though the TA was great at consolidating the material. It's not a difficult class if you read the material (along with translations) and do your best to understand it.

Spanish 224 was the bane of my existence. The lectures were ungodly useless, and the TA carried the entire class. They claimed the first exam would be so easy, and it took a lot of people by surprise. Be careful, the lectures are so bland and are sleep-inducing. I can tell he cares a lot, but the class is horrible.

Steve's class is pretty laid back. You do not need to do the readings since he just reads them to the class out loud the next day. He has a nice sense of humor and he's sweet. The class is easy for the first half but the second half with poetry is when it gets tricky.

Spanish 224 was the bane of my existence. He was utterly useless throughout lecture and Mark (TA) carried the entire class. I can tell Dr. Hutchinson is incredibly smart, but this class's lectures were pointless and a waste of 1:20pm-2:10PM ON m w. Call me a hater, but I just can not stand poetry. Also warning, the exams are harder than it seems.

Steven was so so kind and so passionate about what he was teaching. He truly just wanted to talk about the stories, and he was so knowledgeable about them. He tried to keep us interested and only sometimes succeeded. We got to write our papers about what interested us, which was nice. I would 100% take another class with Steven.

Steven was a little boring, but SO passionate about what he teaches. It made it a little easier to listen. We had 3 open ended essays, and we could write about whatever interested us and a weekly canvas post. Course was reading heavy, but Steven provided all the materials. He genuinely wanted to discuss these stories. If you like lit, a must take.

Lectures are boring and not relevant to class. Discussions are mandatory and important in understanding the literature. Exams were a little challenging but overall a manageable class and it satisfied my lit requirement. I feel like I deserved a better grade. Did not like the TA at all.

Steven is so kind and intelligent! He is very understanding with students and the course requires minimal homework. Just weekly discussion posts and then 3 essays and a final project. Very chill, could be more interactive but worth taking for sure.

Lectures are boring and not relevant to class. Discussions are mandatory and super important if you want a good grade on the exam and quizzes and understand the literature. Exams were a little challenging but overall a manageable class and it satisfied my lit requirement.

Seems like a nice guy, but lectures were pretty bad. I often couldn't hear him. He doesn't put up cohesive slides. Lecture material seemed super random and irrelevant. If you don't have to take this class, I wouldn't. Reading the material and attending discussion are the true keys to success. TA Mark was the saving grace.

Steven is a highly intelligent man, but an inferior lecturer. He struggles to engage with the class, has issues with technology often and sometimes can't speak loud enough for the class to hear him. He's a nice guy, but assigns A LOT.. Studying for the midterm and the final were challenging because it was mysterious to know what they would cover.

While his lectures cover some useful analysis of the course material, there's a lot of fluff that makes it feel like it isn't worth coming. Reading, completing all the assignments, and showing up to discussions are the real keys to success in this class. He's a forgiving grader, and the works he's selected for the class are generally interesting.

the lectures were dry and hard to understand what the main, important things were my ta really carried the class

He clearly enjoys the topic he’s teaching; however, he’s extremely hard to follow, and says ‘um/así que/pues’ very frequently. He seemed like a kind person, however I fell asleep in his class more than once. Going to lectures seemed somewhat pointless, at-least for the first half of the semester. I wouldn’t recommend the course.

Dr. Hutchinson is incredibly passionate about what he is teaching and beyond knowledgeable, but his lectures are hard for students to follow. For this class, he typically just read through literature and talked at us without any powerpoints, direction, or lecture format. Very difficult to learn from lecture and stay engaged

Steven is a great professor and I cannot suggest taking a class with him enough. I learned so much in his class without there being a ton of assignments. I am not the best at Spanish but I looked forward to his class everyday. He is clearly passionate about the course material and very knowledgeable.

Steven did not know how to teach online and did not foster learning. However, he may be a better professor in-person. You can definitely tell that Steven loves teaching and is really passionate about the material. He may be a better professor for other classes.

He is very nice, caring, and knowledgeable of the material. His class is incredibly easy. He picked good literature for us to read. He is disorganized though and sometimes shows up late and teaches past the end of the class time. His lectures are also a little boring sometimes.

Steven is a good guy, very knowledgeable of what he is teaching. But, I don't know if it was because this class was online, but it was really boring. Showed up to the first class and never showed up again. The TA carried the class. You can get an easy A if you read by yourself and go to discussion. Don't bother going to lecture though.

Professor Hutchinson is an extremely kind and caring guy. The only objective of this class is to read and discuss don Quijote and Miguel de Cervantes. He is VERY passionate and knowledgeable about these subjects! I will say discussing the same novel the entire semester could get a little boring, but overall its a low stress class and Steve is great

Loved this class so much! We watched Money Heist and had six oral assignments. Would definitely take another class with this professor. He was so nice and understanding and left sincere feedback. Easy A you just need to show up.

Professor Hutchinson is amazing. Very easy grader and gives meaningful feedback. This whole class was based around watching Money Heist which made the class so much more fun and interesting, and helped my conversational Spanish improve way more than in other grammar based classes. Would 10/10 take class with him again.

Dr. Hutchinson is the best of the best in his field and was the most understanding and caring professor I had in my time at Madison. He helped and encouraged me to succeed and inspired me to become a Spanish professor as well after receiving my Master's degree there. You will not meet a more caring man in your life.

Steve is a nice, smart man. and deca-lingual! There's no doubt he knows his stuff, but he is quite the talker. This class required a LOT of reading (too much), and him "lecturing" at us the whole time. I thought all the readings & class were quite boring. Only one exam which is cool. Unless you like reading and history, I wouldn't recommend this.

Steven is a good professor, but his lectures are definitely geared toward smaller class sizes. He tends to be hard to follow and ends up getting off topic a lot. I definitely got the most out of my discussion sections and eventually didn't attend lecture.

He is a really nice guy and he knows what he is talking about but his lectures are pointless and he's all over the board when it comes to topics. Honestly its better just to skip and read the readings at home and just go to discussion.

love this guy. he was easy going and approachable. answered all questions with clarity and willing to email after hours. can't help but exceed with a guy like this

Professor Hutchinson is a very relatable and easy going professor. He is very easy when grading exams and papers. Class is a bit boring and it is sometimes hard to understand the points he is making.

One of the best spanish teachers I've ever had. He explains concepts very well and is easy to understand. I would recommend this class!

One of the best professors I've ever had. As long as you can speak Spanish at a decent level, he keeps things interesting and explains everything well. Exams and papers are fair.

Steve is very passionate, approachable, and kind. You can tell he loves literature and language. Really attempts to engage students and encourages creativity and exploration on papers. Take his class if you can!

GREAT PROFESSOR! As long as you are good at Spanish, you are guaranteed an A. Beyond that, he makes you really interested in the reading and helps you analyze! Don't stress about papers/project if you try and know how to write grammatically-correct Spanish and well-focused English papers, you will get an A. He wants you to succeed!

Steven Hutchinson is the most helpful, approachable professor I have ever had. He goes well out of the line of duty to help a student, and he is incredibly understanding. At a huge university like this, it's great to have a professor who genuinely knows/cares about you. I adore everything about him, his courses, and his class time!

An incredibly encouraging professor. Hutchinson really tries to connect with his students and is the most passionate teacher I've ever had. He is my favorite professor ever.

Very passionate. He actually got me interested in things that I never would have been. Excellent professor and a pretty easy grader.

Steve is the most amazing Spanish teacher I've ever had. He's so incredibly passionate and has great knowledge about many things beyond the class subject. I won't forget his class ever
