I loved Professor Young for IS101!! If you go to lecture and do the readings the tests are super manageable and the two essays are not hard and we were given a lot of time and support. He is clearly very passionate about this course and the enthusiasm makes lectures more engaging. If you are interested in Econ and IR I would highly recommend.

The in-lecture explanations were very good but the textbook was difficult to understand.

Lectures were very engaging and easy to follow. Grade is based on a weekly homework assignment, two papers (one group paper and one individual paper), and three exams that were reasonably easy. Lectures were recorded and posted online, along with the slides so everything was pretty accessible.

Attending lectures is super helpful because many examples Professor Young gives in class can be used on the exams, same with the readings (worth even just skimming). Doing the worksheets throughout the course makes writing the final paper so much easier and I would definitely recommend choosing a TNC for the topic. Textbook isn't super important.

Super good guy. Reasonable with grading and tests. One homework assignment every week and somewhat interesting lectures. TAs were great. Would give extra credit acouple times and weeks off of work. Great class!! Recommend.

The class is like Human Geography, Economics, and Politics had a baby. It is super easy and lectures are recorded and posted online, so I stopped going in person. Prof Young is British so it was difficult for me to understand him for the first few weeks. The class was boring, but it is a pre-rec for my major.

Great professors. Obviously passionate about the topic and exams are pretty reasonable. Exams are in-person though. Consistent homework throughout the semester but the better you do them throughout, the easier it will be to write the research paper. Overall, would take this class again. Hoped it was in a better lecture hall though.

Loved Professor Young's International Studies 101 class. Since I am studying International Studies, it was interesting to me. He does ramble a lot in lectures but it's because he's very knowledgable. The grading is pretty easy and so are the exams. Really recommend this class as easy social science credit if at all interested!

He is a very nice person, but his lectures are all over the place. Very hard to understand his lectures at times, he often overcomplicates things. It doesnt feel like an intro-class.

Don't understand the high ratings here. Lectures were boring. Didn't learn much at all. Doesn't make himself or the material accessible to students, but if you read from the textbook you'll be alright.

Just a bad professor. Doesn't explain much. Doesn't care for students' success. Not a fan.

Original rating was taken down for some reason, which I found... strange. But anyways, Professor Young is one of the worst professors I have had at UW. Just doesn't seem to care much about his students. Very pompous attitude. Any attempt to ask a question outside of class was given a highly dismissive response. I couldn't recommend him to anyone.

It was very clear that he loves what he does. His lectures felt more like TedTalks because they were so inspirational and entertaining. Take his class, great guy. Also he's British, so who doesn't love that.

I loved taking IS101 because of Professor Young. I found his lectures to be interesting and engaging. The homework thats for this class makes writing the midterm paper so much easier, so put some effort into those!! With every class, I would go to office hours if you have trouble with the material, but I would definitely take this course again!!!

Young is amazing! Readings can be a bit dry, but lectures are interesting. Exams are reasonably difficult, there were two projects that were graded easily, and discussions tend to be review sessions. People claim about boring content made slightly better my Young's personality and English accent. . .but his progressive worldview is what I loved.

His lectures are good. The textbook can be found for free online. Fair tests. British, which is always a plus.

Very disorganized professor, if you have anything outside of the normal submission process, be prepared to have to remind him. Takes forever to grade, vague "attendance participation" rubric, even if you participate multiple times every class, prepare to not get a perfect score in participation. Often late to lecture despite being online. Nice guy

Prof young gives great lectures and the course work is relatively easy

Stephen young was a great lecturer & was super funny. The class is pretty straight forward- there are 3 midterms and 2 research papers which they guide you through pretty generously. The exams are 25 multiple choice and 3 essay questions that are hinted at during lecture. Go to lecture and discussion it makes it 10x easier. So far its been my fav

I took IS101 and it's my favorite class ever! If you have a good TA it makes all the difference. He is a really engaging lecturer and the final isn't cumulative. Overall a really great class and interesting.

Stephen was a fun professor to have. He is very passionate about the topics we cover and does a great job explaining things. His slides are more of a visiual aid for himself than for notes, most of my notes were from things he said that were not on the slides. Overall an interesting class and I learned a lot.

Professor Young is very knowledgable and his British accent is great. The class have 1 midterm and the final, with 2 big papers. Just these 4 assignments pretty much make up your grade. Go to lecture and take very specific notes! Book wasn't needed. Overall, he was funny and I really enjoyed the material.

A lot of information not shown on lecture slides is what he tests on, pay attention to everything he says. He is kind of all over the place when he answers questions. A lot of textbook reading as well.

Great 101 professor. Interested in the material; if you listen in lecture you don't have to read the book. Econ chapter is difficult for non-econ majors, but not too bad. Amazing & funny guy, great class!

if you end up taking IS101: chose to write about an INGO over a TNC for your research report. that is all.

Stephen can be funny at times, but his lectures put me to sleep. The material is about the economy, policy and government, which became very boring. Two papers, two exams. The textbook is the worst and you can get away with not reading it. Discussion participation matters. It's an ok class, but not my favorite.

Professor Young is a very funny and friendly guy, and I would definitely recommend taking a class with him! IS101 in particular was a fun course, very policy/economics based but still interesting, and the exams are very fair. If you do the readings and go to lecture, you'll be fine.

Loved Professor Young's class this past semester. He's bright, funny and I found the lectures really interesting. Would definitely take the class again or any other course with Stephen

He's cool

Funny, friendly, enthusiastic. Work a little for your grade. If you're a good essay writer, it's not problem at all.

He is very passionate about what he does and he obviously knows a lot, but the exams and papers are tough and he grades things very strictly

Lectures will put you to sleep. Easy grader (there weren't many graded assignments. Do NOT skip discussion, but you can probably skip lecture if you read. His final was 3 essays, each with two options (pick one). One set was focused for people with lecture notes, and one was focused for people with textbook notes.

Okay. First 3 classes. He's awesome. he's got that british accent yeah. And he is a good lecturer. but It's like you're listening to National Geographic. It puts you to sleep. And I've talked to other people and they all agree. His voice is toooo soothing. THere's a loooot of reading. Assignment directions are kinda vague.

Young is a nice guy but super boring lectures. Your grade solely depends on your TA and they are usually hard graders. At the beginning of the semester there was a 4 mile walking tour of Madison and a long, really boring paper about it. At the end of the semester there is a 10 page paper. weekly assignments due and mandatory discussions.

Just finished IS101 with Steve-O. Overall, the British professor was a funny, but confusing teacher. Most of his lectures were dry and made no sense whatsoever. His tests and papers are relatively straightforward and easy though. The textbook he makes you buy is completely useless. The class wasn't really what i expected it to be.

While I love Stephen Young, IS101 is nothing like I (and many others for that matter) expected. It's not a hard class, grading is very lenient on papers- Average is almost always a high B. Textbook is completely useless during the course and very dry but can be helpful when preparing for final. If you're not majoring in IS, take PoliSci103 instead

Professor Young has a British accent, he's always prepared and excited for lectures, and he comes up with creative ways to teach material. He's the best professor I've had and I learned so much just from his sheer passion for International Studies. !00% recommend taking IS 101 with him, you won't regret it.

The class description is really vague, so I figured the class would be about cultures and religion etc. Nope! The entire thing is basically about global policies, finance and economics unless that's your thing. Fell asleep in almost every lecture, but other than that Steven is a great guy, makes you smile, but I wouldn't recommend IS101.

This class is extremely vague, the first half of the semester is really centered on economics and the lectures get pretty boring sometimes although he has an accent and cracks some good jokes on occasion. There's a ten page paper due towards the end of the semester, but it's not too bad. Managed to bs my way through .

love love love Stephen Young. His accent makes lecture not as boring as it would be otherwise. However, at times his lectures seem a bit pointless. The class overall isn't too hard, but a lot of it depends on who your TA is and how they grade your work. two papers and two exams.

The topics are very broad in IS 101. However, the professor is very humorous and personable. When I went to his office hour, he explained everything with several examples and smiled all the time. Also, he is very knowledgeable teaching both International Studies and Geography.

Professor Young is a great guy, and a really good professor, but IS101 is the worst class I've ever taken. It is nothing like I thought it would be. There has been literally nothing to do with culture. Everything is global finance. It's really boring. I hate it. However, Stevie is a great professor and I'd love to take a different class with him.

He follows the textbook (that his mentor wrote) for his lectures, but he is very engaging and personable. Has a wide variety of interests and is very helpful outside of class.

great guy and great professor. charming, but also really great and helpful on an individual basis. makes it easy to engage with and understand the material. great person and professor. can't speak highly enough of him.

He is incredibly charming, but it just always seems like he is rambling, and then you discover the information is important...

Frankly, I had no prior understanding of class material prior to taking IS 402. Prof. Young presented the material in a way that was easy for me to understand. He is awesome at giving lectures -- I would go just for the entertainment! He is great during office hours, too. I would definitely take another class with him!

Great great professor.take a class with him if at all possible. can't recommend him enough.

Love love LOVE Stephen Young! By far my favorite prof at the University. He's very engaging and incorporates various types of media and activities into lecture. He's incredibly approachable and always clarifies when ideas presented seem vague. He also has a backpack of personal stories and experiences that validate the arguments he makes.

He's really great. Always provides worthwile, interesting material and is a fair grader. He's passionate about his work and has a great demeanor. Couldn't ask for more.

you should be disappointed in yourself if you dont get an A. 10 page paper on something i could have written about in high school. there is reading from the book but you really dont even have to do it to get a good grade

Lectures are insanely boring, he just reads his lecture slides to the class, but it's not hard. A lot of work for a 101-level, but none of it is hard.

He was an awesome professor! I'm so sad I won't have him next semester! If you do the work, it's impossible not to get an A.

Really funny and interesting guy. Also really helpful to students. I'm probably not going to get as good of a grade in this class as I'd like but it's totally my fault. The professor is awesome and I would love to take another class with him!

Very interesting class. Discussion is mandatory. 10 page paper is due before the final, but its a lot easier than it sounds. Ladies, even if you don't like the subject, you could spend the power lecture STARING at Professor Young and not get bored. Awesome accent.

Stephen is hot and adorable at the same time. He's also funny and interesting to listen to. He cares for his students and answers email really fast. As far as work goes, there is a lot of reading. Exam not too hard, but his paper sucks. Overall, I would say take the class, but be prepared for a paper that will frustrate you. Hope for a helpful TA!

Is extremely knowledgeable about the material and is able to convey it eloquently and in an interesting/funny manner. He's a very likable professor. Overall the workload is pretty easy. Great class that makes you think about the world. Take it!

His assignments are fair. For the most part lectures were interesting and straight-forward. There is a lot of reading however and it is hard to determine what needs to be studied for tests. Difficult at times, but he is more than willing to help- if you're motivated and take good notes you will get a good grade. He's very knowledgeable and funny.

Cool accent, really nice, funny & approachable guy, very passionate about the material, exams are easy if you go to class (& study obvs) and books are interesting. Course is introductory so it covers a lot of topics, all of which Prof. Young was pretty knowledgeable about; wide variety of assignments (movies, books, audio) so it's not as boring.

Stephen is a great guy! He has the greatest accent, as he is from Manchester. He seems really passionate about what he teaches and the tests are a very fair representation of what we learned in class. Great class!
