Very very smart guy; however, his lectures are average at best. Moves quite fast, and there's an overload of information that doesn't get explained super well. Often gets distracted by his own research interests and takes up lots of lecture time on this, which is interesting but not necessary helpful for exams. Exams are impossibly difficult.
Professor Stahl is okay at lecturing. He likes to go on tangents quite a bit, and it is hard to follow sometimes. There is a lot of material to understand. His way of teaching is not very effective at helping you to understand it. He strives for the class to average a 50% on exams. They are normally pretty hard exams. Extremely intelligent guy.
Shannon is extremely smart and is fairly decent at coming down to the student level when teaching. He does talk very fast and can be hard to follow in lecture sometimes. Exams are tough
He dumps a lot of material on you at once, but he breaks it up with fun life advice tangents. You have to pay pretty close attention during lecture to get anything out of them. His exams are a lot of synthesis - both compounds and class material. You kind of learn while taking them. The class is rough, but Stahl is cool.
Very intelligent, with a knack for getting students excited about science. But along with this, exams are highly challenging and really test not just how well you know the material but also how well you can integrate and expand upon it.
He's really smart.
Prof. Stahl is extremely smart and pushes his students to understand the underlying concepts. Pretty much tells you that if you stay within the curve of everyone else you are guaranteed a B, which is a nice reassurance.
Shannon is definitely an intelligent professor. He makes lectures interesting by pulling in some reactions that are actually used in industry.
Shannon is a brilliant guy and presents the material well. The course is less "learn from the book" and more "here's a recently written paper on the topic." Favorite class here
Stahl is a very intelligent man, but not a compassionate professor. He has no forgiveness, and has sky high expectations. I am a chem major and love organic chemistry, but I did terribly in this class. He has a no-make up exam policy--even if your mother dies. True story.
Not a bad lecturer, obviously cared about what he was saying. That said, the exams were extremly difficult (class averages were in the 40's) but the curve helps alot. Normally you would expect a range of difficultly of test questions but his were all hard. Very frustrating and stressful. If Gellmen or Klause are teaching, tkae them instead.
Tests are very difficult and require a full understanding of reactions, mechanisms, and concepts. However, all test material also comes from some idea presented in lecture. Review sessions and optional discussions are helpful for exams, because he sometimes uses concepts covered in these to generate test questions.
very lazy. has no office hours. unwilling to help outside or during class. has no passion for teaching. talks about his own research during class instead of covering what is considered chem 345. doesn't tell you your grade until the end of May. you have no idea how you're doing in class until you get your final report cart. that's how lazy he is.
Stahl is the professor you want to take if your learning style is learning the facts straight-forward without any "fluff". Personally, I really enjoyed his teaching style. Very, very clear and to the point. He's difficult for sure, but the class is (obviously) curved, so as long as you study hard for the exams an A is completely achievable.
He is a difficult teacher, but he is clear as well. He is a clear speaker in class and while his tests are very hard, it was always something he mentioned in lecture as was in the notes. Except for his exams, I liked him overall.
His exam average for the semester is about a 50%. Take this class if you either really love chemistry or really love crying yourself to sleep at night.
He keeps screwing up his mechanisms and disagreeing with the book so you don't know what to study. Also, know what DCC is.
His tests are extremely difficult and require you to not only memorize every thing he tells you, correct or incorrect, but also go way beyond that.
Generally a nice guy...but he has no qualms in pushing you to your limit. He requires chemical understanding way more than other professors teaching this course (for ex. he does teach molecular orbital and you ARE expected to know them)...good for chemistry majors but not for med students.
not a very clear lecturer, not a good prep for 345
Very good at explaining, clear and interesting, usually. Good professor
Extremely well prepared. Relates material to application well, and is willing to help outide of lecture.
Really nice guy. Explains things very clearly. Useful prep for 345
This guy showed no interest in his students Don't bother emailing him questions
He was awesome!
