Engaging lecturer, very knowledgeable about Scandinavian folklore. Sometimes grading seemed unclear and ambiguous. Mini essays due every week. Be warned that this class does require a lot of reading to be done prior to class, but no exams or final.
Really engaging lecturer, I never missed lecture once. Sometimes grading and late policy seemed really ambiguous, probably ended up hurting people more than helping and was more of a pain to grade for him. Mini essay every week. Made a stink about failing people who used Ai, but one of my groupmates clearly did the entire semester and got away w it
A great professor who you should take if you can! Funny and engaging lectures, though slides are a little lacking. Fair amount of work, no exams just discussion boards and a project. Super understanding with extensions and helping students, can be a bit of a tough grader but always willing to work with you. Would take again in a heartbeat. The goat
Professor Mellor was genuinely such a good professor. He cares so much about the material he teaches and always makes sure students understand the material. He makes learning about the material very engaging and makes you want to come to class.
Scott the goat
If you can, take this professor! Prof. Mellor is a very caring, kind, and funny teacher and person. If something came up, or if an assignment wasn't turned in on time, or anything of the sort, Prof. Mellor always listened, understood, and worked with you so that you could get your assignments done. I wouldn't hesitate to have Prof. Mellor again.
Wonderful professor, but there is A LOT of readings assigned each week. Typically three assignments each week. Lectures are funny, but slides don't really have good information on them. Fairly nice grader. Still a fun class.
From the perspective of a CS major, this class seemed intimidating at first, but I gave it a shot after reading the positive reviews about Scott, and they were right. Scott is an amazing professor. He always encouraged participation, creativity, and always let the class think for themselves rather than "creating 50 Scotts" and I appreciated that.
Scott is an amazing person, very easy class 10/10
Scott is super chill. The class consists of discussion boards and minute papers that are due every week but he is flexible with due dates. 2 essays are worth 50% of your grade. The class is not too hard, he makes lectures super interesting and I look forward to his class every week. I would take his class again.
Professor Mellor is wonderful. He's extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subjects he teaches, and his lectures are very good and explain the material clearly. He cares a lot about his students, and he's easy to approach if you have questions or need clarification about anything. I've taken many of his classes and he's always great.
Scott is a great professor and his passion is clear. However, unless you are very fast at notetaking, you will get lost in lecture. Slides are not helpful for understanding, and although always interesting, he often goes off on a tangent that might not be relevant. Be ready to read a lot. However, the class is very fun and he's a good educator.
Took class to fulfill a university literature requirement ; however, I was not prepared for what it would take to get an A (I barely got one with a record of 4.0). Your grade is almost entirely based on two essays and they are graded VERY HARD. Class avg for first exam was a C. The grading criteria are extremely unclear - no rubric. DO NOT TAKE!
Scott must have been one of the funniest and most charismatic professors Ive ever had. I genuinely looked forward to our weekly Zoom sessions. Best part is the groups you are put in and get to bond with while learning awesome material. Only critique is the extremely high expectations for the midterm and final exams. Can get an A, but its hard.
This class might have been the hardest thing I have ever done but Scott is legit the best. I felt so proud of myself after taking this class. Scott cares so much about each & every one of his students and is super aware when you're not okay. Took it with a FIG of 8 others, & we got very close to him. He would push deadlines when we got overwhelmed
Awesome Professor, one of my favorites of all time! He's very interesting to listen to and has really good lectures. I took this class with a fig and it worked out really well. Loved this professor.
Scott's the goat. Easy to do well in class but you also learn a lot. Don't have to pay attention or do all of the reading, but class is much easier when you do. Very understanding guy and always looking out for you. You can hand in assignments very late and they don't have to be done well. As long as you do all the assignments you'll get an A or AB
Honestly I really wasn't interested in the course material which didn't help. Professor Mellor had very specific opinions about the texts that were read which could be frustrating at times if you didn't come to the same conclusion as him. Overall, the class is pretty easy, just a lot of busy work that wasn't always beneficial.
An 81-90 is considered an AB. You have a 400 word discussion post to write every week, along with commenting on two. It's annoying, but easy if you just follow directions. There are only two big papers. Class participation isn't necessary, I skipped a lot and still got an A. Just read the text closely and be creative in your own interpretation.
Prof Mellor is a cool guy and clearly cares about the students, asking for feedback on how to make things easier to balance with other classes. That being said, the class is stupid, most of the readings are unnecessary and the posts and essays were graded in a confusing manner by a TA I never met. Participation not necessary.
This class is way more work than it should be. You don't need to go to lecture, but there are at least two weekly quizzes (easy), a long discussion post and board that you need to read multiple articles and stories for, and three essays for midterms. I took the Comm-b section and this added way more work than the one extra credit you get for it.
Fun class, fun teacher. Really knows his stuff on the topics he teaches. Expect reading weekly, though by no means is it tough to keep up with. Overall, a qualified and capable teacher who makes his class entertaining to attend and easy to understand. No regrets. Would definitely take again.
Took two classes with Scott during my first semester at UW; was hoping I was going to like him as much as I've liked other professors in the past. Turns out he blew them all away. Amazing, engaging, thought-provoking professor and all-around amazing guy. As others have mentioned, absolutely hilarious. Fair, honest, approachable and open-minded.
Take a Folklore class with this guy. Just do it. His lectures are fantastic, interesting, and energizing; and he's an EXTREMELY relaxed grader. Doesn't care if you hand things in late. As long as he knows you're doing your best to understand the material, your grade will be fine and you'll walk away from each class with a ton of new knowledge.
Took two classes with Scott, one was a discussion group and the other a big lecture. He is by far the best teacher I've ever had. Listening to him speak is mesmerizing. He is laid back about assignment deadlines (one girl in my class turned in an essay 4 weeks late for full credit). He really inspires you to think about issues society faces today.
You get out of this class what you put into it. Attending class is a must, and the CommB portion is tough (but it is incredibly rewarding). This class fundamentally changed the way I think about and analyze not only literature but also the existential questions of life. Andersen's writings are profound and at times shocking. Scott is awesome, too!
Scott is an awesome guy! Very helpful. Also his classes are fairly easy.
Scott is such a funny professor. I look forward to going to lecture and seeing him make his jokes and interesting analysis on the books. Tests are a wee bit difficult but he is there to help you improve and truly wants all his students to succeed and to actually develop an interest in Scandinavia!
He is a really good Ancient Astronaut Theorist. He was great on the Ancient Aliens show!
Class was great and Scott is great! Always there to help you if you need it. Although, there is a good amount of reading, Scott makes the classes and the readings coincide with one another.
Very interesting professor who really know the materials very well. He keeps the class very lively. A lot of stories to read for this class and some are really boring. Exams aren't difficult if you read the stories and can remember them well enough to write them in your essays.
One of the best profs I've had at UW. Lectures are interesting and he frequently jokes with the class, keeping students engaged. Really cares about his students and is very fair about grades. Tests are essays with choices for which question you want to answer. Definitely some of the fairest exams I've seen. Questions are easy to anticipate.
He keeps lectures interesting and likes to make jokes a lot. Overall he's a good professor
Really fun, interesting lecturer. He keeps things interesting and fun. Lots of readings are assigned, but he goes over them well in lecture. Not a difficult class in the slightest.
Super fun lectures, he's there to help if you need it, and the readings are really interesting. Overall the class is enjoyable just to sit in and listen to.
Good instructor, though the amount of reading was pretty demanding (something like 2000 pages of sagas plus a couple hundred for online readings as well). Going to class was interesting just because he could spend 10-15 minutes on a tangent. Good if you want to learn about Scandinavian culture, but lots of work and extremely difficult to get an A
Nearly impossible to get an A in this class. Not sure why Mellor changed his grading criteria, but according to the UW Registrar's grade distribution report, only 2.9% of students earned an A. That's only 4 students out of 138 in Lecture 001. CommB students did a little better - 13 students out of 94 earned an A (7.4%). Compare to 27.9% A in '09
Scott is a great and very entertaining professor! He has great knowledge of Andersen and his tales and makes class very interesting. However, I would not recommend taking LitTrans for ComB bc then your grade is determined by your TA and my TA (Ellen Jacks) was really picky. Or try a different TA. An easy class became really hard to get an A in.
Excellent professor! Engaging discussions! Great sense of humor! Emphasizes contemporary relevance. Clear. Approachable. Helpful. Very knowledgeble. Highly recommend!
Scott is awesome! Although I had to read way too much for this class, he made the material interesting. He's out to help you with whatever you need. A sharp dresser too!!
i love the starting class with music. it's a fun class
Very, very interesting prof. Take lit in trans 271! Very good class. A snappy dressy at well! I highly recommend him.
Scott's awesome. A really nice guy. Take a class with him if you can!
This was an EXTREMELY easy class! I don't know how you can't do well when he gives you the test questions a few days before the test! You do have to go to class though, he will give test hints and answers in class. Nice guy, very helpful. The only hard part was finishing the essay test in 50 mins, but if you go to class, easy A!
Class isn't that tough, but to get an A on exams you've gotta know your stuff. Fun for comm-B. He's extremely well-dressed, but talks REALLY quickly when he gets into a lecture.
Mellor is definitely a nice guy, but the Hans Christian Andersen course is painfully boring. Exams are all essay and fairly easy, but you must pump your responses full of detail for an A. If you must take a lit class, take it with Mellor. The amount of reading for this class isn't bad at all.
Class is pretty easy. Exams weren't bad...some questions from the sample exams would show up on acutal exams. Comm-b section was pretty tough at first, but it depended on the TA
Very easy class
This class is a very fun and interesting class. The readings are fairy tales, and it's interesting to pick them apart. Mellor explains everything pretty clearly, and he is always willing to help and answer questions. The exams aren't that tough either.
Awesome lecture, the materials were easy and cheap, the image was precious, and the exams were always a welcomed surprise.
Lectures are pretty boring, but as far as lit classes go the amount of reading isn't too bad.
Not too bad of a class. Readings aren't horrible, exams aren't bad. Material is pretty boring. Overall not too bad. Good class to take comm b.
Mellor kept the class extremely interesting with his unique personality and his humor. I thought the exams were very fair and if you do the reading and go to lecture, there's no reason not to get at least an AB. Best professor I have had so far here!
This class was awesome. Mellor is a wonderful professor. He is thoroughly knowledgeable, entertaining, and a snappy dresser to boot! For my part, I greatly enjoyed the JoAnn Fabrics applique vest, as I enjoyed all the vests. Up with dandies! It ended up being my favorite class. I wish all my profs were like Mellor.
Mellor, Since I know you check this board, I am going to take the opportunity to say you rock my socks! I especially like it when you are sassy...very funny! Word of advice, ditch the Joanne Fabrics' Applique vest... for my sake. Please! GREAT class and GREAT professor! It was always a treat to guess which "decoration" (flower)you would be wearing!
Fantastic professor. Class is interesting and goes at a good pace; not too slow or too fast. Professor really knows his stuff and loves to answer questions. Exams are fair, but you have to write some things word for word in order to get credit, it seems. Highly recommend this course. I did not take the comm b requirement, so that may not be as fun.
Not any easier than a typical lit class, so pretty good. Funny prof, good stories. Nice class. Alot more interesting than I thought it would be. Who knew Andersen was so screwed up? Not your normal fairy tale!
Scott is great, as long as he likes you. He takes the time to answer questions and takes his discussion groups to the terrace, and drinks beer! I have been to multiple dinner parties at his house and he is one of those rare professors who will actually fee
not that bad of a guy, a little strange. this class is easy and its a great way to fulfill comm-b. do some work, should get good grade.
The guy is nutty as hell, but helpful enough and the class is easy.
Scott Mellor is a pompous ass. That being said, this class is a cakewalk. Take it to fulfill literature requirements..so easy..
Kind of a boring class sometimes, but overall the teacher is really good. He's nice and fair but the lectures tend to be on the repetitve side. Take it for comm-b though and you'll be in good shape.
Thinks he's really funny...not so much. The tests don't really seem to give you much chance to use what you've learned. The questions are kind of vague and annoying. Work-wise, this class is not hard. Only 2 night exams and the final.
He's really nice and the class is really easy. Mellor tells you almost everything you need to know for the exams, making them much easier. He does a great job and answers everyone's questions!! take this class!!
Easy class...I mean, its about fairy tales
