Literally the slowest talking, most monotone speaker possibly ever. I literally could not sit through the lectures because I was so depressed by the time they were over. You can put recordings on 1.5 speed and they sound normal.
Prof. H is not a very good professor, but ecology is very easy, so easy that most will be ok even if they study themselves. PS: BIO152 is a disorganized class. You will be tricked by the credits, and the IP will force you to work beyond the time designated to 5 credits, messing up all your schedules. Labs are meaningless. Disappointed.
cares about the material but has BAD lectures. she doesnt explain concepts well enough and doesnt give you time to write everything down either.
She's nice but I felt like her slides were less organized than the other 152 lecturers, maybe because her content is more conceptual
Sara is super friendly and approachable, and extremely knowledgeable about trees on campus. Vey easy to make up points on quizzes. However, the class felt disorganized and she rarely set clear expectations for certain due dates, causing me to almost miss a few deadlines. The grading criteria for weekly tree quizzes was also extremely confusing.
The material for this unit is not particularly difficult, but Prof Hotchkiss' delivery makes it difficult to keep up with. She is very quiet and mumbly, and does not seem to know what the next slide will say. You can tell she is passionate about the material, but the format is hard to decipher.
Dr. Hotchkiss is a kind professor but her lectures were super boring. She is disorganized and has around 60-80 slides for each lecture, which is difficult to keep up. Her learning objectives did not correlate to the content in what we needed to know and we had to look at the slides, discussion hw, and read the textbook to prepare for the exam.
The lectures were literally impossible to sit through. 100+ slides, mostly pictures, and she would ramble about something that didn't pertain to the course. Contradicted herself and the exam was not clear on what would be on it. I'm sure she means well but just did not work for me or any of my peers.
Dr. Hotchkiss is kind and knowledgeable, but her lecturing style did not work for many people. She talked very slowly in a monotone voice and her lectures were 60-100 slides per each 50 minute lecture (watch online in double speed). The exam was hard compared to others and there was really no exam prep given. She also never responds to emails
She seems nice but not a good teacher for this class. Her slides are not informational at all and they're filled with meaningless pictures. Her lectures are boring and she does not seem motivated to teach. She does not prepare her students well for exams and is unwilling to provide additional study material like other Bio 152 professors have.
Good, nice person and knowledgable. Lecture slides could be a tiny bit more helpful though!
I had Dr.Hotchkiss for both Bio152 and Botany402 and it is safe to say that Botany 402 is definitely her strong suit. I did not quite enjoy the way she taught the botany section in bio 152 BUT she does a phenomenal job in botany 402!! She is extremely kind and understanding of students experiences.
The worst. Slow and quiet talker, doesn't help that content is not interesting at all. Lecture slides are mostly pictures so its hard to study from. Honestly, don't waste time going to lectures, watch all videos at 2x speed a week before the exam and you can teach yourself content. Test was extremely difficult and unfair in my opinion.
I dont even know what is in her brain. Exams have nothing to do with lectures/slides/hw/activity/discussion quiz/quiz/study guide/even textbook. The way she worded the question makes the correct answer dependent only on the explanation from herself and you cannot argue anything using biology in no way.
Extremely boring lectures, speaks slow, quiet, and monotone. Lecture slides have between 40-80 slides for a 50 minute lecture and contain mostly pictures with zero explanations of them. Introduces vocab with no definitions, slides are incredibly unorganized and contain extremely irrelevant information. One of the worst professors I've ever had.
Really boring! Talks slow, monotone, does not explain stuff well. Her lecture slide format is horrible: 50+ slides with lots of useless info, multiple slides in a row that are the same with one sentence of extra info (makes it difficult to find relevant info for review), presents slides out of order/does not include all slides she presents.
I dont mind being rude because of how angry i am.
Does not answer questions. Very boring. Thinks her information is common sense. It is not. Makes everything more confusing. Monotone. Expects students to understand everything without explanation. Very unorganized. Horrible slides. Slow speaker.
Sara is a super slow talker and super monotone, she does not really explain the information too well. Lectures are pointless and topics are really easy to understand without having to pay attention to, just a bunch of terms to memorize.
Amazing prof, was hard virtual but many outdoor activities
Dendrology with Sara was very fun. Its basically an excuse to go wander in the woods and look at plants. You really do learn a lot from her but its not stressful at all since she allows corrections for half credit on all quizzes. She just wants you to learn the stuff rather than stress you out over exam grades. Super laid-back.
She was okay. Pretty clear overall, which was good. She went way too fast through the powerpoints though, I had to start bringing my computer. Exam was pretty easy though, ecology subject material is very very easy. Also find someone who has taken her last semester/year. The questions on her exam barely change from year to year. Just saying.
One of the best professors I've had at UW. She really cares about her students. Take her if you can.
First off, if you have any interest in learning about trees, TAKE DENDROLOGY!!! A lot of memorization, but tons of fun and very laid back. I'm obsessed w/ trees now! I can't walk down the street w/o trying to ID every single one, and you learn cool facts about them all! Sara is a wonderful professor, a very sweet lady, and extremely approachable.
Amazing professor! Take her if you can.
I'll give it to her that its tough to teach ecology in such a short period of time, but overall it was boring and seemed like a lot of BS, didn't really feel like i learned anything
