Professor England would call out students for bad work and it seemed like he was trying to humiliate students. His lectures have no purpose or organization, and you could get the same grade with or without going to class. That being said, if you skip classes be ready to get passive aggressive emails and bad grades. Mentions politics too much aswell

When I went to ask him questions he was rude and aggressive. Called out students, and commented on their "bad work" in front of the class. Opened up class discussion for our opinions on the political election. Overall, created an unwelcoming class environment, would not recommend.

He enjoys informing students when they receive a bad grade. Delivers news of failing grades with a smile. Condescending.

For Tests: Do the readings and prepare for tests. Make notecards, timeline, or whatever. Be prepared or you will do bad on tests. Majority of grading was 2 tests, final project, and class quizes. Professor is easy to talk to and class is generally chill. You will learn a good amount about the middle east if you havent before.

I took Arabic Lit and Cinema 302 with Prof England and he was the easily one the best professors I've ever had. He was incredibly knowledgeable and well organized, as well as generally kind to us. He even bought us all coffee once for showing up on a snowy morning. Genuinely one of the best classes I've ever taken, highly recommend.

He is very accessible outside of class, easy to talk to, accommodating, and passionate about what he teaches. He is receptive and open to suggestions and feedback. The class is structured and lectures rely heavily on participation + a mini-quiz. He is a bit anti-tech focusing on using pen and paper but is laptop friendly. Grading is average.

The bad reviews here on Prof. England really trouble me. He is far from "extremely rude" and is def not "one of the worst humans Ive met" - and Ive had my fair share of terrible professors. He is very enthusiastic about what he teaches and just likes to see engagement from the class. Honestly, hes on of my favorite and most personable profs Ive had

This prof has single handly ruined any interest I may have had about Arabic culture or literature before taking this as my LITERATURE CREDIT. He expects you to have prior middle east history and culture knowledge. He is extremely rude and doesn't care about his students. His grading is subjective and if you catch him on a bad day expect a C!

Worst teach ever. Avoid at all cost unless very very passionate about the subject matter. Extremely rude, delusional, and pushes world views onto students.

I really liked Professor England!! He is so passionate about what he is teaching and really wants everyone to learn. A very nice guy

Overall, a pretty understanding and easy to talk to professor. Lectures aren't usually very structured, and he relies a lot on participation, which is part of your grade. Attendance is very important, as sometimes he lectures on topics that aren't in the readings. Lots of readings with mini quizzes each week, 2 exams, 2 big projects. A 90% is an A.

Without a doubt, the worst professor I have had during my time at UW Madison. He is arrogant, does not care for students, and is a terrible lecturer. If you have the choice, I would highly recommend NOT taking this class.

Canvas page is an absolute mess and his in class organization is ba. He loses his train of thought in class regularly+ spends time talking about tangent subjects. You could listen intently to all of his lectures and pour over every reading, and still not understand the core course topics. He is hard to contact and is not receptive to suggestions

Assigns papers, readings, and projects as if students aren't taking other classes; ridiculous workload with 2 final projects. Essay prompts are vague and confusing. Lectures are long and often not useful for the papers/assignments, and quizzes have "gotcha" questions that ask about tiny, insignificant details rather than asking about the content.

I'm surprised to see low ratings because I loved this class. Lectures are fascinating- all the way through history since ancient times, critically analyzing many topics and points of view. There are 3 large research projects that determine most of your grade, but you get a lot of freedom with it & I learned so much. The TA Ahmed was great as well.

I wish I checked these reviews before I took his class. The class structure is extremely unorganized, his lectures are boring, and he is neither flexible nor clear on paper/project instructions. He's passive-aggressive to his students sometimes. I gave it 10 weeks before writing this review but I wasn't wrong about his initial impressions.

Worst professor ever. If you care about your grades or your sanity, avoid him.

He's a super nice guy, accessible outside of class, and is really open about discussing concerns you have about the course. However, the class was pretty unorganized. I also feel like we spent a little too much time going over early historical stuff and not enough time on modern politics issues (but I understand there were time constraints).

Worst professor ever. Rude, unclear instructions, never thinks it's his fault, but always others' fault. Would not recommend.

Beware this class was the most unorganized and haphazard class I have ever taken. He gave 3 question daily quizzes on the reading and made them impossible to answer closed book and it destroyed peoples grades. Lectures felt like they had no purpose. Exams tested us on topics that we did not discuss in length in class or were not really in reading

One of the easiest classes I've ever taken. Weekly quizzes based off of readings, but no exams. Papers based off of books we read and nothing we covered in lecture. Go to sign the attendance sheet and then sit and do homework or online shop after the quiz.
