Professor Meyers is incredibly passionate and makes his classes easily accessible for every type of student. He uses a variety of formats to keep students engaged, and he ensures there are plenty of opportunities for students to improve their grades. This class is a great option for students looking to take a fun and easy science course.
Cannot recommend Prof. Meyers enough. He obviously loves geology and wants everybody to succeed. As a non-STEM major, he made all of the topics easy to understand and pretty interesting. We had opportunities to get creative in our discussions. Best part of the class: you get a pet rock to keep! Loved this class and you will too.
Prof. Meyers cares a lot about his students & content. He gives out "free exam questions" during lectures, and you can use your notes on quizzes & the final exam. Discussions/labs are easy but required, and there are small online participation assignments throughout the class. Highly recommend this class for non-science students who need a credit!
Wasn't a big fan of the content but Professor Meyers made class super interesting! Very passionate and makes concepts very simple. If you need science credits this is definitely a class to take.
You will not find a teacher who cares more about his students and geoscience at this school. This class was so fun and a great physical science credit and he always wanted his students to succeed. Take this class for a fun time and for the great music he plays. Go geobadgers!
Prof. Meyers is super passionate and easy going. His lectures are interesting and easy to follow, but they aren't mandatory. The labs are pretty easy but they do take attendance and make up about 30% of your grade. There is a final but it's very easy because you can use your notes. One of my favorite classes I've taken.
Probably the easiest course I've taken at UW, but in a good way. You can get an A if you skip lectures and just turn in the assignments, but his lectures are fun and interactive for those interested in going. He's very kind and conveys information clearly. He also does a good job of making the course low stakes yet interesting.
It's called 'rocks for jocks' for a reason. Didn't ever go to lecture and still and easy A. Absolutely go to labs, they are for a grade but also pretty chill and fun. Can't say I learned too much, but that's not why I took the class. Meyers is clearly passionate and loves what he does, but sometimes lectures a bit dry. Overall would recommend.
Fantastic lecturer who is passionate about his field. Great intro course and has no doubt recruited many future geologists.
Stephen is so passionate about the topic and it shows in his lectures. Great professor
Prof. Meyers cares a lot about his students and makes lectures engaging and fun (a few of them had musical performances!). He puts quiz answers in the lecture slides, labs are relaxed, and there are no readings. Fun & easy intro class and a really genuine professor. Go geobadgers!!!
I would recommend this class to absolutely anyone. I'm not typically interested in science, but Professor Meyers made every lecture interesting and enjoyable. I especially loved his lectures on climate change. Students are allowed to miss 8 lectures - or more if you have a valid reason (sickness, etc). My favorite class I've taken at UW.
Great professor, very easy class, that is also interesting often.
Prof. Meyers is AMAZING. If you are looking for a science credit, take his class! Not only is it very straightforward, but he actually puts in the time and effort in his lectures. Very open to feedback. Sweet. Funny. Overall, just a good guy that wants you to be passionate about geoscience as much as he is. 100% would take this class again.
Dr. Stephen Meyers is hands down the BEST professor I have had at UW-Madison. He is an absolute gem, very funny, and loves his subject. He cares for his students and asks for feedbacks after every lecture. Quizzes are very easy if you follow lectures, and Prof. Meyers gives out free quiz questions, so don't worry. The band days are the BEST! :)
Very cool professor who is super enthusiastic for what he teaches. He definitely loves the work that he does and is passionate about geoscience. If you go to class you are pretty much set to get a good grade. We have quizzes but if you go to class, you will have no problem.
Very passionate
go to the band day
I took this class my freshman year and it was amazing! He really cares about students and made this class so much fun. His enthusiasm for the topic and way of teaching helped me narrow down my major and I'll always remember this class.
This class is an extremely easy A. The exam questions and answers are in the lectures. Plus, the lectures are actually rather interesting to watch. The work is not very difficult and can easily be finished within the length of a discussion section.
Very easy A class. If you watched the lectures you received all of the quiz answers, there were no exams or essays. In your lab section, you can complete all of the work within 50 minutes if you work hard. Would highly recommend if you need a science credit.
Stephen Meyers is by far the best professor I have ever had. He is so passionate about what he is talking about. I've loved this class so much that I actually considered changing my major to geology. Overall, great professor and I can also tell he is a really great person. Cares a lot about what's going on in the world and his students.
Very easy. Pay attention and you will do well. Values student feedback highly.
I honestly loved geosci 100. I didnt really expect to love it this much. Let me tell you this professor was prepared for Covid because they had pre-recorded lectures at the lecture halls from 2018 -2019. The TAs are very helpful. they really enjoy what they are learning and teaching.
Great online lectures, I'm sure it would be a lot more fun in person
This is not a subject I'm interested in, but Dr Meyers made this very enjoyable. He made the content understandable for someone with no geology background. Super easy, not too much busy work. Would totally recommend the class
Took this class during COVID, but Prof Meyers had recorded lectures from past years and would stitch them together for our online lectures. Super nice and lectures were helpful for quizzes. There was no final exam and he gave us a "Spring Break" with no labs/quiz because Madison didn't give us any days off.
Best professor I've ever had. Really engages with the students and tries to understand them and their needs. Takes hours out of his day to read feedback from every student, every class. He is extremely helpful and very interested in his work, which makes the class great to be in. 11/10.
Wow! Dr. Stephen Meyers is a real gem. He is very inspirational and his lectures are indeed the best across the campus. He is one of the few professors who explains complex concepts perfectly as if you are a geologist. He is by far the best professor I have ever had. I had no background in Geology and started to love geology after him. He's awesome
This class was intriguing and very easy to pass, as long as you pay attention and take good notes. His lectures tend to be very messy even though he gives out an "agenda" for each chapter. By the end of the semester I got very bored, so if you aren't interested in the Earth, rocks, and climate change this may not be the class for you.
Going to be an easy A as long as you show up and pay attention. extremely nice and genuine teaching staff. Don't know if I learned a ton from the class but I still enjoyed it a lot, and I have more appreciation for geoscience now. They adjusted very well to the pandemic and were responsive when emailed.
I absolutely loved Professor Meyers class! You could tell he truly cared about his students. Even with a 400+ person lecture, he would have every student turn in slips of paper with what they understood from the lecture and what they didn't which was so helpful! Also everything was open note- he wanted you to focus on actually learning the material
He is great, super fun and makes every lecture interesting. Would recommend everyone to take his class.
Professor Meyers is the absolute best. This man puts SO much effort into his lectures and really cares about his students. I definitely would recommend this class to non-science majors looking to fill a prerequisite because he was such a great teacher that it actually made me care about this subject! No midterm, online quizzes, open note final :)
Stephen is bar none one of the best professors on campus. He's the kindest soul, giving interactive and passionate lectures that make you smile at the audience participation bits. While it may be 'rocks for jocks', you still learn a good amount. Content is simple and straightforward, and class includes jazz band performances?? THE BEST!
BEST CLASS EVER! Professor Meyers is the most dedicated and passionate professor I've ever had. Science and non-science majors all equally loved the class. Lecture attendance not mandatory, but you really don't wanna miss them because you get free exam Q's and they're just really fun to go to. Open notes for final, but not for the 3 quizzes. :) :)
if ur not a science person 1000% u should take this course. he dumbs everything down so much its not hard at all. plus if u come to lecture he gives away answers to exam questions. also really have to appreciate the effort he puts in to make geoscience interesting for a majority of Non-geoscience majors. 3 20 question quizzes& one open note final
As a communications major, I have zero knowledge of science. I took this class for a science credit and Stephen put complex chemistry and geology terms and concepts into normal person english. Also he gives you like half the exam questions which is clutch. He's super passionate and genuinely interesting to listen to. Labs are super easy as well.
He is all over the place in his lectures, never know what I'm supposed to write down or if he is going over irrelevant material. He gives away free exam questions which is absolutely plug, however he just doesn't go over things in an organized/chronological order. Nice guy though.
The course covers a lot more than just rocks and Steve does a great job of explaining everything. The course was more interesting than I assumed. Attendance is necessary to get the material you need. Book is useless. He also gives out 40% of test questions which helps a lot. Tests are pretty straight forward if you go to lecture. Overall great guy.
He was my favorite professor this semester! He genuinely cared about how students did in his class, and is very passionate about Geology. The class is much more than just rocks, and he works everything in awesomely. Midterm and final are almost half questions he gives you in lecture, so lectures are important. Gives you plenty of resources as well.
I would definitely take it again if I had the choice--it was very interesting. He's extremely passionate about the subject! He gives test questions to you in lecture, so it makes it easier to just sit and absorb what he is saying. This also helps a lot when you have 40% of the test questions and answers before the actual test day (word for word)!!
Great class. Discussion is only a 50min lab which is super easy. TA was extremely helpful. Studied from lecture "road maps" that he puts online, filled in the blanks, and got an A on the midterm. He puts the lecture slides online too. An easy and fun science class with lab credit. Paying attention is critical to getting good grades.
Took this class for an "easy A" science, but it wasn't as easy as you would expect. The lectures are incredibly boring and are hard to follow. He gives you exam questions in lecture, which is a plus. However, when it comes to exam time you end up at a loss for what to study because his lectures are so random and he doesn't use the textbook at all.
Not as easy as you think!!! Grade entirely depends on the TA you have. Exams can be easy if you go to lecture since he gives you some exam questions. But my TA graded labs soo hard. Such a boring class with a ton of information. My least favorite class I have ever taken.
The grade you get in the class mostly matters who you have as a TA. The TA I had graded labs very strictly. The textbook is only needed once in a while for labs. He gives you some of the exam questions during class. Extremely boring material but he loves talking about it.
He is a great professor. His class is really easy and he does a great job explaining the material.
He is the best professor I've had so far. He is very enthusiastic. He explains stuffs very clearly in understandable way. If you fellow what he teaches in the class, i believe you will get a good grade easily. BTW, he is knowledgeable, and I really enjoy his class.
Only got a C because I find the subject matter really boring and didn't pay attention, I just needed a science for gen ed reqs. He's a very nice, engaging professor, he tries to make it interesting, if you like rocks you will love this class. Oh the TA was terrible so beware- get someone who speaks English so you understand the labs!
He really loves what he's teaching. Exams are based partly on in class power-points and the textbook readings. Discussion is easy to get a good grade in, as long as you attend most work can easily be finished during the time you have.
