Lectures are clear with lots of examples, though missing lecture could make the course confusing. Tests are very predictable if you use what she gives you between the discussion sheets, practice exams, and problem sets. Content isn't difficult but there is a lot of it.
The class average on exams is really low. Lectures can be really confusing, so make sure your attention span is top-notch. You will be bombarded with tons of formulas and expected to memorize them (no cheat sheet except for finals). Lectures matter; if you miss one, it's a little hard to catch up. Lectures aren't recorded.
She's a solid professor, a bit overrated if you ask me. Lectures are solid and the material is somewhat difficult but presented well. Attendance is taken in discussion which is always annoying but overall the class is quite easy. Exams where very predictable and are easy to get a high grade on if you study. Overall not my favorite but not bad.
Professor Chan might be one of the best professors I've had at Madison so far. Her lectures are clear and easy to understand. And each exam gets easier if you keep up on the problem sets, the lecture, and quizzes. She also extends her effort to meet with students outside of class
VERY COMPLICATED CLASS, very hard, a normal econ class worth of content in just the first month. However, Professor Chan is a really great lecturer so if you go to the lectures you'll do fine. Also you can bring a cheatsheet of equations to each exam (you need to) but extremely knowledgable on the subject and very approachable. 11/10 professor!
one of my favorite professors I've had in UW. Not only enthusiastic but also has the professional experience. Visit her office hours, regardless of your grade, and just chat if you ever have questions about career path and such. When it comes to grades, just attend all the lectures and you can get a solid grade. Grading system is very clear
From taking five Econ classes so far, she is the best lecturer ever; tests are not easy, but makes perfect sense, lectures are crazy good, and very open to questions. So great.
Professor Chan is a very nice person, and she explains the concepts very well. The class is extremely difficult, so take it seriously. Attending lectures/discussion sections (the latter of which is mandatory) will serve you well, as well as giving the time needed for problem sets, online responses, exams, etc. And go to office hours when possible.
Chan is good at what she does. Lectures are solid, but she truly cares about the students. Not overly difficult exams, if you go to lecture. Lots of review material for exams. For those required to take Econ102 and are looking for the easiest possible option, she's not a bad option by any means.
Stella Chan is one of the most amazing professors at UW-Madison. Her dedication and preparation for lectures are beyond comparison and you are in safe hands with her. She is great at explaining tough concepts and connecting them to current affairs. You know those extra-mile professors you always hear about? She is one of them.
Stella is a nice teacher and does a decent job trying to help students, but the exams are extremely unrelated to information covered in class. Additionally, she flies through the lectures, making it difficult to keep up and truly comprehend what she is saying. Overall, very difficult class, and my least favorite I have ever taken.
She was a great teacher for 102, her lectures are great and as long as you go to them, you should be solid.
Her lecture notes are all you need to do well in this course. And to see the lecture notes, go to class every day.
Prof. lays out clear and reasonable expectations, apportions a reasonable quantity of homework, and writes exams that reflect the concepts learned in lecture. Prof. has made concessions for students beyond what one could expect. I would recommend 461 with Prof. Chan as an Econ elective. Conceptually challenging but very manageable workload.
The workload was manageable with the weekly problem sets being noticeably shorter than the problem sets in Econ 101 with Prof. Johnson. She provided a weekly practice quiz along with a graded quiz so I felt prepared to take the graded quiz. She also provided copies of previous semesters' exams. I found studying those exams really beneficial
Amazing outside of class, holds review sessions and OH. Lectures are good, she hand-writes notes along with students. Lectures not recorded and some content she discusses is not available outside of lecture, so don't get sick. Clear expectations and fair exams & grades.
Stella Chan is such a great professor - and one of the most caring and kind people ever. She put so much effort into our learning and preparing her lectures. She handwrites lecture notes alongside us in class, and uses current events to aid our learning. Definitely a tough class, but she makes you want to succeed.
Lectures are very tough to understand. Exams are tough.
Stella is wonderful! She explains materials very clearly and she offers great lecture notes!
Econ 102 is a tough course, but Professor Chan made it fun and interesting to learn about. She spends more time than she needs to caring for students and wanting everyone to succeed. She is .one of the most caring and sweet woman I have ever encountered. Overall, hard class, but great teacher.
I loved professor Chan. Obviously Econ is a pretty tough subject, but I felt like professor Chan had clear expectations of what she wanted you to take from the class. I also really liked the note taking method she used during her lectures.
She is the BEST professor I have ever had. Smart, caring, inspirational. I don't know other professors who will spend so much time preparing their lecture. She waive current event into her lectures. You will be blessed by taking her class. HIGHLY recommend her.
Highly recommend taking 102 with Professor Chan. She ties relevant current events into class, has clear expectations, and provides great opportunities to succeed by hosting review sessions weekly as part of office hours. Exams are very similar to the practice exams. Loved her!
It was an amazing semester with Prof. Chan. Very organized lecture notes and she explained all the concepts pretty clear. Also, she is very accessible outside of classroom. Learn a lot during her office hour including course contents as well as career choices. Definitely recommend you take her class.
The class is difficult but manageable, if you put in time studying you can earn an A. There are 2 midterms and a final. The exams were fair and you were given many review materials that closely resembled the exams. You have an online quiz and homework assignment every week but your lowest scores are dropped. Overall I would choose this professor.
You will submit a rough draft for your paper and get zero feedback or comments on the direction you should head. She has a very vague grading rubric and never gives feedback or comments on any assignment.
I could not speak more highly of Prof. Chan. Lectures were enjoyable to attend and her notes style was very useful. Homework was fair not too complicated. Tests were very similar to practice material she gives out. She was very helpful and easy to speak with, make sure you go to class though! I hope to take another one of her classes again
Stella is a very nice lady. There might be some weekly quizzes but easy to pass. Just follow her during the lecture, you will understand clearly and learn a lot. And feel free to go to the office hour, she will help you patiently.
She has an extremely organized lecture method and canvas page. She makes the class easy to follow and does a good job making everything expected clear. The content is pretty challenging, but overall I think she does a good job explaining it.
Amazing prof and super organized. Her lectures are awesome and if you take good notes you won't need to study too much for the tests/quizzes. Does a great job of connecting the course material to the real world and explains them really well. Holds helpful review sessions before quizzes and tests. This class takes hard work but it is well worth it.
She's amazing. Her lectures are always well organized and easy to understand. She is also patient and nice to answer questions and gives a lot of extra office hours. Her class totally attracts me. And her grading way is clear and fair. Just feel so lucky can be in her class!
Solid professor who is accessible and always willing to help outside of class. She is very nice, but I found a lot of her lectures confusing and the information presented was not immediately clear. Her exams are also incredibly challenging and are not similar to the lecture material. Her class is adapted well to online learning though.
Professor Chan was one of the best professors Ive had at UW. She made her lectures interesting and relevant to the world and extremely inspiring to a non-Econ major. Shes highly organized and accessible to all students. I highly recommend her!
Professor Chan was alright. Wasn't great by any means but also wasn't as bad as some of the other professors I've endured. The lectures was somewhat helpful, but also relatively confusing. Her note taking style makes it hard to follow and understand at times. Her lectures aren't very helpful when it comes to teaching material that shows up on exams
Class work is absurdly confusing.
very very hard tests
She is very good at explaining the course content clearly. In her office hours, she is extremely helpful when answering questions. Lectures are not mandatory, but she only showed the lecture notes in class. Overall, a very helpful and knowledgeable professor.
Professor Chan was great, she is very smart and makes lectures engaging by using real world examples. I took her class in the spring of 2020 so half the semester was spent learning online, and she handled this transition as smoothly as possible. She moves a bit quickly in lectures though, so you can't let your mind wander or you'll miss something.
Very enthusiastic and cares about the subject. She falls short by assessing the students with only 30 multiple choice questions on her midterms. At first that sounds great but when you think about it your gut intuition on just 2 problems can almost sway you an entire letter grade. Also the note taking style is cool but hard to read and frustrating.
She is AMAZING!! I can't stress this enough! She explained everything thoroughly and the grading was curved pretty well. She made you read before class as you have to submit a reading response BEFORE EVERY CLASS (but sometimes there's an exception) but it really helped me in getting prepared for the lecture. REALLY RECOMMEND HER!
I loved Stella, her class was pretty interesting and she was always willing to help out if we needed it. She's a gem, definitely take 464 if you can
