Sarli is a very empathetic professor who clearly cares a lot about each of her individual students and is very understanding in terms of deadlines and attendance as long as communication is established. After having taken Spanish311 with Sarli I genuinely feel that my abilities to write in Spanish have noticeably improved.
Sarli is very kind and a great person but a disorganized professor. Deadlines were always shifted or changed, Canvas was a mess, and communication outside of class was a bit rough. I learned a lot listening to her Spanish but was a bit stressed during the semester with the lack of clarity on assignments. Sarli is lovely but grading took weeks.
She is a super nice person, but VERY disorganized. Every week expectations and deadlines were changed. I was always confused on what was due, and it was never clear on the grading expectations/what we had to do for our homework. She is very nice, definitely cares, but is completely unorganized and very unclear on everything regarding the class.
I loved having Sarli for Spanish 311! She truly cares about her students and makes class engaging for a topic that would typically be kind of boring. I would really recommend taking one of her classes!
Although Professor Mercado was very very nice and clearly cared a lot about her students, the class is so disorganized and expectations are often very unclear. I feel bad because she is such a nice person, but I found myself very frustrated by the lack of structure and confusing nature of the class assignments and homework.
Prof Mercado was really understanding and caring. She really cares about her students and lives outside of class. She gives great feedback and truly wants every student to get better. I only found this class difficult because I struggle with Spanish. Definitely take this class with Prof Mercado, you won't regret it!
Literally the sweetest person ever. She genuinely cares about her students and focuses way more on learning the language rather than assigning homework or intense assignments. Her feedback was incredible and she gave us multiple opportunities to visit events across campus to learn more about culture during our class period.
Sarli is one of the kindest profs you will ever have. She is very understanding and is SO nice. For 363, there is a decent amount of reading that you should prepare before every class and attendance/participation is graded. However, she is a lenient grader and is always very helpful when you speak to her. 10/10 would take again. She is lovely.
Sarli is one of the kindest profs I have had. She cares about everyone and accomodates for any issue you may have. The class itself is kind of disorganized which can be stressful sometimes. Group projects happen almost weekly. They are mostly easy, but can be frustrating if you have a bad group. Overall love her, but this class is just eh.
Sarli was very kind and was clear in what the expectations were. Lectures were prerecorded, and she is easy to get in touch with. There were lots of assignments, including partner work, but they weren't long. Grading was generous, and Sarli is reasonable when giving extensions (don't take advantage though!). She's very sweet, would recommend.
I LOVE SARLI- Every semester of my Spanish major I would check to see what courses she was teaching and went from there. She is such a considerate professor and understands that being a student is very stressful. She is very willing to work with students outside of class and will provide a lot of feedback as long as you ask her questions!
Sarli doesn't give out tests but rather assigns lots of essays. She is super nit-picky and downgrades every single mistake. I had to work really hard for the A I received, but she grades hard so that you can learn from your (100s of) mistakes. She takes so long to grade the essays, too. But, she is super kind and clearly cares about her students.
She is the best and I love her.
She is so nice, one of my favorite teachers at UW. Busy work for homework, and barely any testing which is nice
Sarli is an amazing and caring professor! She gives great feedback on essays and encourages participation without being overly demanding. I improved my writing skills and grammar from this class without being too stressed about it. Would definitely recommend Sarli!
She assigns lots of reading homework but you really should read it because all you do in class is discuss the readings. She is a very deep professor so be ready to really analyze Spanish texts!
Really great professor and amazing woman. Willing to do anything to help her students succeed in her class. Sets fair expectations and very light on exams. Only critique is that there was a lot of busy work
The class: really abstract and vague material, which can be challenging. Very open to interpretation. a TON of readings - got hard to keep on top of. Many were difficult, long, or boring. The prof: Great person! She's kind, energetic, and helpful. Didn't put many grades in or return grades quickly, but loves to discuss the material.
Profesora Sarli Mercado was an absolute joy to have as a professor. She is really funny and really appears to enjoy teaching. She gives a lot of homework but that would just help you on the writing. Speaking of writing, this course it writing intensive but she gives us at least a two week notice. I highly recommend taking her class.
No exams. Grades are all writing and participation based. She's a picky grader, but fair. It is a writing intensive course, but she gives ample time to complete all writing assignments in a timely manner. A pretty easy going professor and a lot of fun to have in class. If you're taking 311, you definitely want to have Sarli. You won't regret it.
Super approachable and friendly. The class can get slow and dry, tending to rehash grammar. Grade is mainly based on 10+ writing assignments & attendance. No textbook, print the course book. She can be a picky grader on writing, but is very helpful with rough drafts and office hour appointments. Cares about her students and wants you to succeed.
Prof. Mercado is by far one of the best Spanish professor I've had. The class can get kind of boring with the subject matter, but she does her best to keep it lively. She grades kind of hard on papers but give a ton of feedback and is always willing to explain why you lost the points you did. I would highly recommend her-awesome professor!
After taking this class with Sarli, I signed up for every class with her I could my last few semesters. She is a fabulous instructor regardless of course and will go above and beyond to make sure you understand. I'm generally terrible at attending class, but I actually wanted to go to hers since she was so sweet. SPA 363 with her was my favorite!
Sarli was extremely knowledgable, helpful and fun. Her class is traditional and involves mostly busy bookwork and various writing assignments. She obviously takes great care in her teaching (see her lengthy, handwritten feedback on papers). I'd highly recommend her 311 class.
Sarli was a good teacher for 311. No tests, just essays. Lots of busy work, but she loves it if you participate. Easy to get an A if you put the time into it. She's very nice, helpful, and traditional in her teaching styles.
Loved Sarli for this Journalism based topics in Spanish class. Readings were interesting and very relevant. Wish I wasn't graduating, so I could take a class taught by her again!
Lots of daily work. Discussion is expected and will help your grade if you participate often. Tests were fairly easy.
She is ones of the sweetest professors ever and is very helpful. Lets you use notes on some of the exams. Take this class with her!
Don't take her, she is very condescending, and patronizes the class. She is a hard grader.
I would not recommend Sarli at all. She speaks incredibly fast, and has an air about her that makes you feel stupid and unwilling to participate in class. I didn't feel comfortable asking for help from her. She doesn't do a good job of clarifying unclear information, and her grades extremely hard. Take the big lecture, not her small class.
Definitely take Sarli. She is the sweetest woman who wants you to do extremely well and she is always available for help. She is also incredibly enthusiastic about the class and although I did not find the course subject particularly interesting, she definitely sparked an interest in the class for me and it became my favorite class. TAKE HER!!!
I really enjoyed this class! It's a lot of work but if you prepare for class each day it is interesting and helpful. One thing, though, is that she does not verbally correct mistakes, which I prefer as I'm learning the language.
