Professor Henke's class was interesting and accessible, and he introduced me to a lot of interesting concepts. His lectures are informative and easy to understand, and the discussions are great practice for the exams. This class should be fairly easy, even if you're not a language major, and doesn't require much work outside of class.
what a nice and respectable guy. only thing about him is the speed he goes over lecture slides is intense, but the uploaded videos of the lecture sure help. 10/10
As a STEM major taking this for a humanities credit, I didn't expect to enjoy it—but Dr. Henke made it engaging. His lectures were interesting, well-paced, and he welcomed questions. If he didn't know something, he'd humbly admit it. Dr. Henke is a great professor and I highly recommend him for any class.
Recorded all lectures, so I would watch those to prep for discussion where TAs make sure to go over important things. Do practice problems for the tests and help your group in discussion and the tests should go well too. Super clear explanations and examples for linguistic concepts.
Very engaging and well-made lectures, you can tell Ryan is passionate about his work. He communicates all the topics in a very clear easy to understand way. Exams were very easy and representative of what was covered in lecture and in the readings.
Ryan is a great professor and always finds ways to make lectures engaging. I actually think Ryan is the best professor I've had on campus. He obviously cares about students and their education. He provides plenty of practice material and is incredibly clear with grading and testing criteria. If you can take at least one course with him, please do.
Great guy and a great professor! I really enjoyed his lectures and course content.
I love professor Henke.
Dr. Henke is great at teaching! He had a massive 300+ person lecture and managed to keep most of us interested. He clearly cares a lot about linguistics and his students.
Professor was super friendly and made lectures interesting. Your grade consisted of a few exams, homework practice and worksheets done during discussion each week with a group. Going to discussion definitely helped clarify information that may have been confusing. Overall, a very fun and interesting class.
Dr. Henke is a great lecturer and is dedicated to making sure the class understands what's going on. You have to work with a small group every week on a worksheet in discussion. Take the worksheets seriously because they really helped me be ready for the exams.
Linguis 101 is very easy humanities credit and Ryan is a great professor to take it with
Great Guy
Records and posts lectures. Discussions have worksheets worked on in groups. I liked the class, thought it was pretty easy. Explains concepts relatively well, and TAs were happy to help. Pretty good choice for a requisite.
Ryan himself is a good lecturer, but the class is boring. Discussion sections are helpful, they are really the only way that I figured out the concepts. Be prepared to memorize, and know that the class is mainly based on problem-solving.
He is funny and engaging and made a hard subject easy. My favorite thing is one time he said "If you guys don't want to be here, don't come I record the lectures and post them." that made me laugh. Great class and prof to take if you need humanities credit
Very easy class if you attend or watch the lectures, which were always recorded. Moved pretty quickly but I think the topics were covered very well so it was easy to understand. Overall, very engaging and easy class.
Overall, I have liked the course a lot and he keeps the lectures pretty interesting. The coursework isn't too hard and the exams weren't too bad either if you studied a bit of the exam prep work as well.
Super easy class, lectures move a little quick but are super clear. Lectures were recorded and discussion attendance was based off of if you did the worksheet, not actual attendance. Very little homework and little reading. Even though it was easy I still found the material engaging, definitely recommend if you need some humanities credits
Ryan (you call him Ryan, not professor Henke) is a really good dude and you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches. Lectures are not entirely necessary to go as they are all recorded and posted to canvas. Discussions are required but you just do 1 group project per week that is usually finished within the time. Easy class. Good dude.
