Ron is an awesome guy! Really cares about giving thoughtful feedback, will brainstorm ideas with you. You're expected to turn in a decent amount of new writing content every 2 weeks (10-20 pages), anything from short stories or long-fiction, etc. Time management is really important!
I had Ron for ENGL408, but that wasn't a class option. The advanced workshops require a ton of writing, but he is amazingly laid-back and truly cares about you as a person/writer. Sincerely don't think I've met a nicer guy in college, and even better you can learn a ton from him. He's also happy to brainstorm creative ideas, which is so valuable.
I had Ron for two separate workshops, including my senior thesis. His comments are always helpful. He's a sharp editor, has a great sense of humor, and a lot of good anecdotes. He's laid-back where it counts, but always eager to pitch in ideas whenever you're stuck on something. I couldn't recommend him as an instructor more whole-heartedly.
No one has rated Kuka in 2 years! One of the few CW professors who doesn't give written comments for your work, but everything he says is gold. Laid back kind of guy
For someone who basically unknown in the field (I looked him up and found nothing of his own work), Ron is an amazingly adept creative writing instructor. He just thoroughly understands this craft and will absolutely make you a better writer if you're lucky enough to land in a workshop with him. He is a a great, genuine and funny guy too.
He is a nice guy who selects interesting material for classes to read. The only downside is that he doesn't seem that enthused to be a teacher, and even shares this will you on occasion.
Interesting class. Decent amount of work. In class discussions are always interesting.
I was too harsh in my previous review of him, so I'm adding this variant opinion. He is certainly masterful in some ways, his ability to pick apart the great parts of a story and subtly explain how it could be improved. His perceptive reading of a story and his often hilarious stories create a productive and never intimidating environment. There.
Not the greatest of CW teachers, but who is? Still, I prefer the generalizing of some "lower level" TAs who state their opinion on 'where you are' in terms of the writing world. As opposed to Ron's piecemeal approach to improve each story. That's fine for weekend daytime litmag Coffehouse Poetry Reading writers who will never be great.
hands down the best writing prof you'll ever have. offers tons of ideas and advice and really knows what he's talking about. easy to talk to and geniunely cares about students.
