Rob is an outstanding and passionate geography professor! He uses current examples in his lectures which makes them extremely engaging. The class is more project based so get ready for weeks with a heavy work load and then weeks with not as much. If you are interested in cartography, I definitely recommend taking with Rob.

Absolutely loved taking 572 with Roth. The grading was always super genuine and fair and points we're only taken off because of good reason. Available for office hours once or twice a week every week. Genuinely nice guy who cares about how you're doing.

The lecture is super interesting and clear.

Nice guy. Exams were unnecessarily difficult. A lot of course content is useful outside the classroom.

Took this for honors optional science credit. The lectures are posted online, but make more sense if you go to class. Get a head start of the labs and go to his or your TA's office hours! He gives 8 quizzes throughout the semester. Only downfall is he didn't have an honors project planned, so I had to create it myself.

Rob is definitely one of the best profs Ive had at UW. His lectures were very engaging and entertaining. He is extremely organized, approachable, and he's always willing to offer students feedback. Exams were challenging but fair, and projects were long but great portfolio pieces. I would recommend this class to both GEO and non-GEO majors.

Professor Roth is AWESOME. Do not listen to other reviews. If you care about your grade and put in the effort you will get a B minimum. The lectures are super relevant to present day. His classes are great even if you are not in the cartography major. His exams are straight-forward. He emphasizes obviously in lecture what will be on. Listen close!

An amazing and engaging lecturer that has inspired me to continue in cartography and geography. Really funny guy that loves using Twitter and personal anecdotes from his travels to create context for learning. Projects and labs are fun and there's a lot of opportunity to make this class your own for any major.

This class was one of the most engaging classes I've every taken, and Rob was an awesome professor and lecturer. I was rarely bored in lecture. The exams were quite easy as long as you pay attention, but the labs are tough. There's a huge learning curve, but you settle into it later in the semester. Really rewarding class.

Rob is the best professor I've had. He's ridiculously smart and respected in cartography but cares deeply about his undergrads. Tests are hard, projects are a ton of work and you're primarily responsible for learning the coding, but it's a great system and I learned more from this class than any other. Plus his lectures are outstanding.

The class should be a must for researchers. It helps one understand the importance of a good representation. Uses great design elements in his lectures, making each one intriguing . Things are simultaneously expected and unique. A good portion of his material is online #creativecommons so you can get a head-start if you are that kind of person.

Roth is the hot new professor at Madison and does an awesome job. Incredibly excited about cartography, lectures are clear and easy to understand, are usually funny and relevant to modern cartography. High work load, but you learn a LOT. He got a standing ovation at the end of last semester. Looking to take more classes with him again.

The course is fine, but the workload is extreme. Rob condenses too much into a short period of time and has rigid deadlines. I got an A in the class, but if I could go back in time, I probably wouldn't take it. I had to abandon too many other things in my life to manage his workload.

Very enthusiastic, knows a lot about the topic. Sometimes his lecture gets really technical and often get pretty hard to follow due to the use of academic vocabulary that is difficult to understand. Labs are not related to lecture at all. Exams are tough: 95% memorization. Above all else, very nice professor.

very enthusiastic, luvs the topic, but exams=terrible, only memorization(probably because he's a new professor? or doesn't get other pples learning levels?) not wut u would expect in 500 level course. oh & class doesnt relate to lab.EVER.no design? if u study intensely you of course can pass the class. but isn't the pt class to learn not memorize?

Lectures are clear. Very enthusiastic when lecturing. Exams are taken mostly from the lecture notes. Very interesting young professor.
