His class was fun and not too stressful, but we often had lectures that constantly switched topics (every week was a new subject with connecting themes). He's very clear on what's on the quizzes, midterms, and final, and is accessible outside of class if help is needed. However, I feel like I didn't improve my french that much with this class.
Ritt is an excellent professor. So passionate and knowledgeable, with lots of great insights and funny anecdotes. Engaged with our 100+ lecture like it was a small discussion, and even remembered a majority of our names. Grade based on 3 in-class essays, attendance, and one critical commentary. Would jump at the opportunity to have him again!
Great professor, but he won't post grades on canvas so you have to keep track manually. Very funny, and I certainly learned a lot about the language. Would take his class again, just wish he gave us grades.
fun lectures where everyone has to participate in some way. readings/homework prep is a bit tedious. his teaching style works well for a student like me who struggles to focus in certain environments. very nice and understanding, also easy to talk to and ask questions. i didn't appreciate a completely hidden grade book, though.
Professor Deitz is hilarious, has such great stories and keeps class engaging. Some of our homework assignments were definitely lengthy, and you do need to read what he assigns to be able to participate in the in-class discussions. I thought the class was pretty easy, if a little tedious at times.
The class is a little awkward in that it is a discussion every lecture. Grading based on participation, speaking presentations, and written short essays. You must read at least 80% of the readings per unit to do well on the essays. Grading criteria was also a bit in the subjective area but was not tough. Overall, great professor and super engaging.
Very engaging professor, doesn't grade based on grammar and super funny
Interesting lectures. Attendence does matter and if you miss class you will miss out on important class discussion. Very understanding professor and his grading is very generous
Professor Deitz was an amazing professor! Probably one of the best ones I've ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and is super open about anything. He doesn't show you what your grades are until the end, but you can figure it out easily. Midterms were easy, just make sure you attend lectures as there's no lecture slides or recordings.
I absolutely LOVED Deitz as a professor. I had him for both French 228 Fall semester and for French 271 Spring Semester. Participation definitely matters in his classes but he's so friendly and funny about it that it's not intimidating. Really cares about his students success and getting to know them as people.
Favorite professor from last semester. Cares about his students a lot and is super approachable. His lectures are funny and engaging, and while I didn't learn any NEW French, I definitely learned a lot about culture and attitudes. He is very passionate and knowledgeable about course content, and you can tell he wants his students to succeed.
You should take this class with professor Deitz if you are into French. I don't feel like I learned anything, but it was certainly interesting and not too demanding.
I LOVE RITT please take his classes
Awesome professor and guy. He's engaging and a really fun person. It is a little heavy on the reading, but the stories are great. I would definitely recommend.
Great professor that was extremly caring and understanding when I had to miss class. He teaches the content and rambles on about stories in french which is neat because it helps you understand french in a more converstional way. He talks most of the time which has really helped me improve my listening skills. There's little homework.
Great professor, very funny and easy to participate in class, there is some speech memorization, but overall a great class!
Overall a nice, funny man! Loved his class and is very lenient on grading and conflicts. Went to his office hours and had a great conversation about the class and his life outside of class. He speaks French in a fluent way to understand and is willing to correct any questions or errors when speaking French.
Professor Deitz is an amazing professor! He is a fair grader and has high expectations but he helps you get to where you need to be. He is very funny and creates a fun safe environment to learn. The class is mostly based on a few writing assignments and a handful of speaking assignments so be ready to speak in front of the class 4-5 times.
Ritt was one of the best professors I have had at UW. His class was thought provoking and inspired me to read more literature even though I am a STEM major. The class requires a lot of reading and analysis but was rewarding. If you can take a class with Prof Deitz - do it!
Professor Deitz is a great professor. He gives amazing lectures and cares about each of his students. He is clearly passionate about the city of Paris and is always available during office hours. I highly recommend taking any class he is teaching!
French 211, French literature in english translation is actually the best class I have ever taken at UW-Madison. I would take this class again in a heartbeat, and I would gladly sign up if he taught another literature course. The class clearly outlines expectations and all class material happened to be very interesting and pertinent to the course
I LOVE RITT. He is such a funny and interesting professor, but he definitely values participation and will keep on you until you understand his question. Although I will not be taking french again because it was quite overwhelming with all of the grammar and oral exams, Ritt made it very fun. <3 you ritt
