May just be the worst professor I've had on campus aside from Mark Laplante
Her lectures were pretty dry and It was very difficult to pay attention during class. Her tests are all multiple choice which is a pain for math problems that require multiple steps.
She has so many bad reviews for a reason
Provides resources to succeed in abundance: each chapter has a study guide, each chapter has practice problems, each chapter has lecture slides. Textbook is very useful. Canvas is extremely organized and that is much appreciated. Lectures are insightful. Glawtschew is approachable for clarifying questions. Very nice lady.
Only with Rebecca could you get 90's on all three tests when the averages are in the 60's and still be looking at getting an AB.
Bro does not curve even if the averages are horrible
I don't really understand the negative comments about this professor. Her tests are pretty difficult but she gives you past exams and review guides that are at least fairly similar to her tests. I feel like if you are coming from something other than an Economics background you have a significant advantage over the business students in this class.
This class is so hard for no reason at all, I have friends in 301 with other professors who have no trouble at all. her exams are multiple choice and completely unreasonable. Lectures are super boring don't take with her!!!
Why are the exams multiple choice when it's a math-based class?
Avoid this professor at all costs
Doesn't assign much homework, very nice and approachable, extremely knowledgeable when asked questions. Definitely one of the best professors I've had at UW-Madison, keeps lectures relatively lively (as much as you can for analytical public finance) and tries to engage the class when she can. ATTEND! (not mandatory but you need to)
Glawtschew is a nice lady but she isn't that great of a professor. She, like the entire Econ department, is very test heavy and her test were meant to trip you up on small things. Overall did not enjoy the class at all.
Took this class with her in Spring of 2024. She ended up giving us practically no curve compared to previous semesters for some odd reason. Almost everyone in the class was very unsatisfied with the curve.
What impressed me most was that the reference materials issued in each exam were not closely related to the exam itself, plus the difficulty of each exam itself, resulting in unsatisfactory results. You may have studied for a long time, but it doesn't help.
7 more points I would have gotten a C but she gave out the world's hardest final. awful in lecture too so hard to follow
I got railed on that final. What even was that
Bro I failed that exam
Like most Econ classes, this one is made difficult for no specific reason. Tests were horrible and material was generally very useless in comparison to material from 101 and 102. 301 is supposed to be more in depth but there are very little real world applications that are presented by Glawtschew.
Rebecca seems like a good person that cares about her students but she isn't a very great teacher. The material is dry and she doesn't do a whole lot to make it interesting. I also did not enjoy the multiple choice exams that I felt did not accurately assess my knowledge but rather my ability to take a test.
Do not take this class with her, it's horrible
Professor Glawtschew is a nice person, but unfortunately, her teaching style does not help in understanding the material. Her lectures are very dry and can be hard to follow, with long stretches where it's easy to lose focus.
这个老师很可怕而且成绩很严厉
Just don't take this class
Her class was probably one of the most boring things I've ever had to sit through. It's another boring Econ class taught by a boring lecturer
Generally an easy class, but take it seriously, otherwise you don't do well on exams. It starts off with algebra/calculus, with economics being progressively incorporated into the content over the course of the term. It's a great class for those preparing to take Econ 301 (which she also teaches), and the workload is reasonable. Would recommend.
Though the content was pretty dry, and it was pretty easy to fall asleep, she does a decent job at teaching it. It's a hard class, with many people doing poorly on the midterms. But if you study hard for the exams, and stay on top of the problem sets (which can be long), you'll be fine. Discussion sections are excellent for extra practice.
Although 301 is an intermediate course that isn't the most intuitive, Rebecca teaches the material in lecture in a really hands-on way with a lot of practice problems so you know exactly how to do everything. In my opinion, the course was structured really well in such a way that you don't need to do any supplemental learning.
All the reviews that are 4 and up are clearly made by people who are suck ups and teachers pets. Y'all don't know a good teacher, and Glawtschew is definitely not a good teacher
Beware of this professor and class. She promises a curve but there it's essentially non existent and there are multiple choice exams designed to trip you up. 93+ was required for an A in a curved class where averages were consistently in the high 60s and low 70s. Completely ridiculous
Garbage curve, boring content, and lectures that make everyone sleepy, need I say more?
Dr G. is a great professor. She is extremely pleasant, very helpful over email, and her lectures are decently engaging. My only issue with her was the multiple choice exams. They weren't particularly hard but they felt like they tested algebra accuracy more than actual knowledge of economic concepts. Overall she is still a good choice though.
Curve is terrible. Consistently scored significantly above average only to get boned by her terrible curve. Averages would be in the 60s low 70s and an 85-90 would still end up being an AB
Horribly made exams. She is anything EXCEPT concise and straight to the point. She barely
Hated this class
So far has been a terrible experience. She teaches the class very math heavy which is alright; however, she then proceeds to assign multiple choice exams that purposefully trip students up and don't award partial credit. Lectures are a bore. She goes over way too many models too fast and expects students to memorize practically everything.
Really enjoyed this class! Rebecca made the class enjoyable, despite the 75 min lecture. A lot of information is coming at you, but she does a great job breaking it down to make it understandable. Each week there is a problem set (can be challenging, but follow the notes) and a discussion activity (go to dis for answers). Overall, great professor.
She is one of my favorite professors here at UW-Madison. I was challenged, but if you put honest effort into the course, you will come out with a new understanding of the math and calculus behind economics. She focused on the practical applications, and it helped me learn. If looking for easy credit, this isn't for you. If you want to learn, it is.
Attendance is not required for class and discussions. Homeworks are pretty easy. She explains stuff well and slowly but sometimes too slowly. She talks so slowly too but you can speed it up if you watch the lecture videos. She posts the lectures on Canvas. She is nice but she needs to be humbled.
I'd say that students who are good at math could easily score A in this class. The main purpose of this class was to prepare us to take more intermediate and advanced level econ classes, and I'd say that it has served its purpose. I'm also taking ECON301 with her, and I could say that taking ECON205 had helped me a lot in acing ECON301 too.
Rebecca is an amazing person, but lectures can be a bit boring. Do the smaller assignment and watch the lectures and you should be fine. Some questions on the test are meant to trick you and can be difficult, but this class just needs lots of time devoted to it
Econ 301 is a very difficult class, but Rebecca was AWESOME. Her lectures were very clear and engaging. Going to office hours helped me a ton with the exams which were 30 multiple choice questions where the averages were typically in the 60s, but there is a generous curve. She provides a lot of extra practice which helps a lot also. Love her!!
Dr. G is very knowledgeable about econ and takes time to go through many helpful examples during lectures. She keeps things interesting with a few jokes here and there and honestly, makes econ a little more bearable. There are 3 exams, all multiple choice. However, this does mean they are easy. Overall, I would recommend taking Dr. G for 301.
Dr.G. is definitely a nice and knowledgeable professor! But, the sense of this course is that grades are heavily determined by exams. There are three of them. Despite having a well-above-average score and doing 100% in every non-exam aspect, I still end up getting an AB. Enroll if you wanna learn things but care less about getting an "A".
I had Professor G for Econ 101 and 301. I skipped both for weeks at a time and taught myself through the homework alone. The 75 minute lectures could be condensed into 50 minute lectures. The content is not exactly difficult but she explains it all well.
Dr. G was not particularly engaging. The lectures were dry and a bit boring. However, she went through the material slowly and felt impossible not to understand it. I felt confident I could do well in the course, and I feel like I learned the content. The course was well structured. I knew what I needed to do to succeed.
Doubted on whether taking this class or not, Im pretty good at math but decided to do it anyway. Its a messy course and the initial content is ridiculously easy, but it gets harder over time. She teaches tough content very in depth that most profs do quickly and terribly. Now Im flying through tougher econ classes, 100% recommend
Slow and dry, extremely challenging to stay engaged in her lectures. Additionally, you are expected to go to read the entire textbook and remember specific examples for tests.
Rebecca is such a good teacher, being one of my first lectures in English, she probably took the cake out of my first-semester experience. She not only explains the content, she also does jokes to make the class more fun. Definitely would recommend
Dr. G is a great professor who is really knowledgeable in the field. The outline and expectations of the class are clear and it's easy to get help or resources when you need it. I will say that the grade is heavily dependent on how you do on the tests, so it's important to study a lot for those. There is also no curving.
Hardest class I have ever taken. I took AP micro in high school and this class should have been more simplified like other professors who teach Econ101. I have friends who all got A's while I struggled in this course. Dr. G is very test heavy, and they are hard. Would not recommend to everyone. She is nice, but doesn't expand past the lecture slide
Lectures are useless: they're just the textbook but worse. If you read the textbook and do the problems you'll do fine on the exams. Unfortunately, the exams are entirely scantron, which leaves very little room for error and punishes small mistakes severely.
I was scared to take this class after looking at the other reviews but I actually had a nice time with Dr. G. It is a more challenging class but it is just like a high school AP class in workload. I never felt overwhelmed, it was all manageable. Dr. G is very helpful outside of class and gives great tricks inside class. Make sure to do the readings
IF YOU WANT TO TAKE ECON 301 DO NOT TAKE IT WITH HER!!! This was by far the hardest class I have taken and not because of the content, but because of the way the class was structured. Videos were so densly packed it took twice the time to copy down the needed notes due to pausing. The exams were all copied from test banks also. One word: AWFUL!
Not impressed. The class is set up with a horrible grading system in general but it doesnt help when the professor writes horrible exams. The exams arent reflective of your true understanding but rather random, unclear multiple choice questions. Do not recommend take Econ 301 with someone else.
Rebecca is a nice woman who really wants you to succeed and this class is obviously no cakewalk. This is hands down the hardest undergraduate econ class in the school but Rebecca knows this, so she gives the fattest curves!
Worst professor I have had at UW so far. Entire class is graded on exams and the exams are "written" (copied from other internet sources) very poorly. Overall a very poor job for an online class
A very interesting class but a horrible job by the professor. The exams were extremely awful. They never compared to the sample exams in terms of difficulty and the questions were very obscure and random. It is very clear that the exams are copied from test banks that are unrelated to her lectures. Would never take again
I took this class in Fall of 2020 and lectures were completely asynchronous. Her lectures did not go far beyond restating what was said in the textbook, and each 'module' contained lots of busy work. This class felt more like a high school class. The exams were way harder than the assignments, and kind of came out of nowhere.
Personally, ECON 101 was not too bad. I have never taken an econ class before and Rebecca really made it easy to understand. Due to COVID, the lectures were asynchronous (all pre-recorded lectures) and the discussion sections were optional. As long as you watch the lectures, do the activities, and take good and thorough notes you should be fine.
She had the most organized online class ever, her canvas website for the class was top tier. She's sort of a tough grader, no partial credit for rounding errors! She is very good at explaining the material and includes interesting points and examples. You don't really need the textbook, she practically describes the readings in her lectures.
Rebecca was sweet and accommodating during the pandemic. All assessments are open-note and you just need to do the work to get the grade you want in the class. I would definitely take her again.
Dr. G isn't bad, but there's better professors out there. She's kind of boring, but is very clear on what is graded and what is due, so it's very clear what you need to do to get the grade you want. There's quizzes every week and tests are worth a big portion of your grade, so definitely do NOT slack off on the readings and hw.
Asynchronus course and I took the class in HS, so I rarely watched lectures. Regardless, it is easy to get a good grade as long as you DO THE HW! So many little assignments that are easy points. Forgot to take a midterm by the deadline, emailed her and she let me take it full credit no questions asked. Very clear syllabus and deadlines.
The routine is the same every week. Textbook --> Video Lectures (up to 10) --> "Participation Activities" (little quizzes) --> Problem Set --> Actual Quiz. One or two of these cycles a week, two midterms (2o% of grade) and one final (30% of grade). No curve, Rebecca is kind of a slow lecturer but means well. Very little interaction with her, all TA
Rebecca was fine, but there are others in the department who are better at teaching this course. She had presentations that she went through and then posted online. I felt I received a well enough education, but there wasn't anything amazing or really helpful that she did or was a part of the course and really helped me understand the content.
Definitely recommend her for 101! She is a very positive person and is always providing ways in which students can do well in this course. A lot of practice resources online and available for office hours. The homework online is easy - it takes the best of 3 tries on each problem. The lecture can get boring but she is a sweet lady, liked her a lot!
I took Econ101. Rebecca was very kind and understanding, especially during the midst of the coronavirus. She made herself available for office hours and provided clear guidelines as to what she expected for class. Although lectures can be rather boring, all the material covered was what was on the exam. Attendance is not mandatory. Very fair prof.
