Professor Medina is clearly enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the content he teaches! Overall, I enjoyed the class.
I like Professor Medina's character and his lectures make me think about different perspectives which is cool. My only complaint is that the course could've been organized a little better.
Prof Medina was alright. The material was interesting but became very repetitive. Most of his classes I would zone out. We have to read lots of articles, but after the 1st unit I stopped reading them unless I needed it for a paper. The textbook is also free on the UW libraries website so don't waste your money on it.
Couldnt have asked for a better prof. to teach US Latinx Literature. Truly makes you think critically and deeply about issues facing Latinx communities while reading an amazingly curated selection of literature masterpieces. Definitely will miss this class!
Prof Medina is my favorite professor in the Spanish department at UW. He's absolutely brilliant and makes important, difficult topics accessible through clear communication. He taught my Chicanx Literature class through a feminist, critical race lens, and incorporated a ton of queer theory, which as a queer person was greatly appreciated. Love him
There's a lot of books, I didn't read them all but I skimmed them and I did fine. There's two papers (6pg & 8pg) about the readings. Those are your midterm and final. Easy grader. Comical and class is very interesting. Gives good feedback and shares about his life. Would def take a class with him again!
Great guy and caring professor. Super easy grader, so just show up and turn in your assignments for a good grade. Good balance of literature and presentations, so most classes are spent just watching others talk. Not too bad.
Ruben was an excellent professor that is extremely passionate about the material that he teaches, as he is one of the founders of the Mexican literary movement "infrarrealismo". Occasionally, the course content is dry but he strives to keep everyone interested and truly cares about his students. A phenomenal educator.
Ruben is one of my favorite professors I have come across at Madison. He is an extremely passionate, intelligent and inspirational human being. He makes class very interesting and relevant to the students lives. He has a lot of wisdom to share and in addition is a very kind and understanding person. I would definitely recommend him!
great class, awesome professor - one of my favorites. He's hilarious too - I'd definitely take an upper level class with him!!
Ruben is open-minded, laid back, and interesting. He forces you to think critically about the novels and the cultural/political context underlying them. He was one of the founders of the infrarrealismo movement in Mexico in the 70s, and knows or has met many of the authors whose work we read (pretty cool). Awesome class, awesome professor!
I heard a lot of criticism towards Medina and the class in general prior to taking this class but was surprised at how easy it actually was. Most of the textbook material isn't included on exams, and he posts all lecture slides. The only difficult part was listening to a 50-minute straight lecture in Spanish, which I rather enjoyed.
I really enjoyed this class, granted, I was interested in the subject matter. I liked Medina as a professor and he made class entertaining and fun. Played a song at the beginning to quiet us down.
Medina was a very boring professor. The class focused on studying abroad but I learned very little from his lectures. The class was based on a credit/no credit so no textbooks were used and there was no final. He's a nice person, but the class wasn't worth the time.
I would not recommend this class. lectures are boring and pointless, you can study from the book/powerpoints/wikipedia the night before the test and do fine. Rubén is a nice guy but not a great prof and the class is awful.
He is a horrible professor. He is very enthusiastic but it is impossible to take notes for this class. He assigns a crazy amount of readings but the book is written like a story and is impossible to find information in it. You get study guides for tests but recognize nothing on them from lectures. HORRIBLE. sorry its a requirement.
Lectures are absolutely pointless. He rambles on for hours about information that won't be on the test. Just wait for the study guide from the TA's, prepare well for the tests, and you will be fine. There are two essays which the TA's grade toughly. Overall, not a difficult class, but the professor is unclear and disconnected with the class.
I really didn't like him. His lectures were unorganized and hard to follow. He was very unapproachable and grades harshly. Either he likes you, or he doesn't.
Very enthusiastic! He is a little sporadic at times, reminiscing about his youth and life journey... But, he really wants to keep the students involved and puts forth an effort to keep the class interesting! If you keep up with the readings and prepare for two hours-ish before each exam... you'll do fine.
Good professor, passionate about the material. He expects you to do the reading, and if you keep up on it you will do fine on the papers and tests. He's not very approachable, at least I thought so, but he doesn't seem mean or anything.
Interesting, likes to go off on tangents. Sometimes flies through literature explanations, other times spends weeks on the same thing. Fair grader, though.
He's a great professor if you like to learn.
